CHAPTER FOURTEEN, unbreakable bond
Tessa felt relieved when she was able to change into comfy clothes after the show was over. She loved the dress her parents had gotten her, but after the night she had, she needed something comfortable. After the show was done, her parents had come up to her and had given her a big hug. They had been so proud and excited for her. Tessa could still hear their words repeating in her head, their excitement and pride making her heart swell with happiness. She was still processing the fact she actually got to play the Orpheum and share the stage with her best friends. She couldn't believe it actually happened and she was still so happy and proud of herself and her friends. But then she wondered where the boys were and if they were okay. If they actually had crossed over.
And then there's the painful reminder Caleb still has control over her. She was heading down stairs when she felt a jolt of pain go through her body, causing her to gasp as she gripped the railing of the stairs. She cursed under her breath as the pain spread through her body. It was a reminder of the deal she made with Caleb. She thought maybe it would be gone now that she and the boys were free and the show was done, but apparently not.
"Hey, Tess, are you okay?" Her dad asked, walking over to her with a concerned expression.
"I'm fine." Tessa lies, forcing a smile. "Just a little tired."
"Are you sure? You seem to be in pain." Her dad frowned. He could see she was clutching her chest with one hand, the other gripping the railing of the stairs.
"Yeah, I'm sure. I just need some rest." Tessa insists, letting out a sigh. "But actually, I'm gonna go check on Julie before I head to bed."
"Okay, be safe. Goodnight." Her dad kissed her cheek before letting her go. He hesitated, concern in his eyes but he decided not to ask. He knew she would tell him if something was wrong. At least he hoped she would. He walked back into the living room as Tessa went outside after putting her shoes on. She pulled her phone out of her pocket, texting Julie she was coming over. She put her phone in the back pocket of her jeans, heading to the garage next door.
She was confused when she saw Julie facing away from her and talking to someone, but she was surprised and relieved to see the boys there. Though after seeing them on the ground and in pain, her stomach churned. They were obviously trying to hide it, but Tessa could see the strain in their expressions and the pain in their eyes. She rushed over to them, ignoring her own pain that happened a few moments ago.
"Are you guys okay?!" Tessa gasps, her eyes widening. "What's going on? I thought the jolts were gone. And I-I thought you guys crossed over..."
"Apparently, playing the Orpheum wasn't our unfinished business," Alex speaks up with a wince. "And I guess the jolts are still there. Just not nearly as bad as before." He looks over at his niece worriedly. "Tess, what kind of deal did you make with Caleb?"
Tessa hesitates, looking down. She was quiet for a moment before taking a deep breath. "I made a deal with Caleb that if he got rid of the jolts for you guys I would take your place and join his houseband." She says softly. "I-I didn't want you guys to be in pain and possibly not exist at all-"
"But now you're suffering in our place." Reggie sighs, shaking his head. "We could have found another way to get rid of the jolts. You didn't have to make a deal with him." He frowns, his gaze softening. "But thank you for what you did. We appreciate it." Alex and Luke nodded in agreement, smiling at her.
"You don't need to thank me, you guys." Tessa shakes her head. "And I didn't care if I had to suffer in your place. As long as you guys are okay, I don't care what happens to me." She admitted.
"Well we do." Julie huffs. "And we're going to figure out a way to break this deal you made." She says with a determined expression. "And figure out how to get rid of the jolts you guy shave." She adds, looking at the boys worriedly. "I-I mean, being in his houseband for eternity is better than not existing at all." She said with watery eyes. She had been holding back tears since she found out what happened to the boys and she was trying her hardest to hold them back.
"Sorry, not going back there." Reggie argues. "No way."
"We got a taste of playing for Caleb, and it wasn't worth it." Alex chimes in. "We couldn't stay there. We won't."
Luke manages to get off the floor, walking over to Julie and Tessa. "The only music worth making is the music we make with you guys." He said softly, his own eyes glistening with tears. "No regrets."
By this point, everyone had tears in their eyes, the emotions overwhelming them. They were so relieved and happy to be reunited and they never wanted to part ways ever again.
"So how do we fix this?" Tessa asks desperately. "How do we break the deal I made with Caleb? How do we make the jolts go away?" She gasped when a sudden jolt hit her just after she spoke, this one worst than the last. She gripped her chest, stumbling a bit. Reggie immediately forgot about his pain and poofed to Tessa's side, catching her before she fell.
He wrapped his arms around her, keeping her steady. She leaned into him, grateful for the support. Suddenly, Tessa felt a warmth spreading through her body, and it wasn't just from the fact she was blushing. It was a warm feeling in her chest that she couldn't explain. Her heart began beating fast and butterflies erupted in her stomach. She didn't know why but being in his arms and him touching her seemed to help. It almost felt as if she could feel the jolt vanishing. She gasped as she noticed a faint glow over her wrist, a purple stamp rising and then disappearing, the same thing happening with Reggie.
They stare at each other with shock, their friends watching them with surprise and disbelief. Tessa and Reggie could still feel each other, but they couldn't explain it. They knew each other were okay and were right there. It was as if their souls were connected. Somehow their stamps from Caleb's club were gone, and they no longer felt any pain. It was almost as if their souls had healed each other.
"What just happened?" Tessa whispers. "Why does it feel like our souls are connected?" She asked with wide eyes. She couldn't comprehend what had just occurred. It was as if their connection had somehow broken Caleb's hold over them and healed their pain.
Reggie shook his head in disbelief, still holding onto Tessa. "I-I don't know," He murmurs, his voice filled with wonder. "But whatever it is, I'm grateful." He looks down at Tessa, his eyes softening with affection. "I don't understand it, but I'm just glad you're okay."
Tessa couldn't tear her gaze away from Reggie's. His eyes were filled with so much love and concern, it made her heart ache. She didn't know how it happened, but their connection was stronger than ever, and it had broken Caleb's hold on them. She could feel the power of their bond coursing through her veins, and it was both terrifying and exhilarating. Tessa could see Reggie's eyes were full of the same wonder and amazement she was feeling, but she also saw something else in his eyes. Love. Affection. Care. Passion. Hope. She saw it all.
Tessa finally looked away from Reggie after hearing Julie's gasp. She was surprised as well at seeing she and Luke were actually hugging, they could somehow touch now as well. "How can I feel you?" Julie breathed out.
"I don't know." Luke said with wide eyes. "I feel stronger." He admitted. His face was glowing, his whole body was and Tessa realized that's how Reggie was when their stamps had disappeared.
"Alex, come here." Julie murmured, wanting to see if whatever was happening to Luke would happen with him too and to see if he was solid as well. Luke was solid, she couldn't believe it. He wasn't slipping through her fingers as her hands gripped his face. She felt his skin, felt him.
Alex joins them in on the group hug, soon Tessa and Reggie decide to join in as well. Suddenly, a bright glow is seen, causing them to pull away. The purple stamp on Alex's wrist floated up along with Luke's and then they disappeared. "What do you think that means?" Julie asked, her eyebrows furrowing together.
"I think the band's back." Luke beamed, his excitement shining through.
"Can we try that hug thing again?" Alex suggested.
Tessa couldn't help but giggle at his shy tone. "Definitely." She agreed, pulling him into a hug and the others follow. The girls were so happy they could feel the boy. They were solid and they weren't sure how any of this happened, but they were so relieved and thankful for this miracle.
"So, question," Alex says after they pull away from the hug. He looks at his niece, who was leaned into Reggie's side as the bassist arm stayed wrapped around her shoulders. "How did you get back to the Orpheum, Tessa?" He inquired.
"Honestly, I'm not sure." Tessa admits, glancing at Reggie. "He just grabbed my hand and then the next thing I knew we were back." She said softly, not looking away from him. "But it was almost like we were connected in a way. Like our souls were connected. I-I can't explain it." She murmured, her face turning red as Reggie sent her a lopsided grin. He had a blush forming on his face as well, but he couldn't stop himself from grinning at her.
"I'm just glad you're alright." Alex admits, giving her a smile. "We were so worried about you." Then he remembered something that made him worry. "Wait, Willie. Can he still see me? Is he even okay after everything that happened with Caleb tonight?"
Tessa realized he was right. She had almost forgotten about Willie and she felt guilty for that. Now she hoped that he was okay. "I'm gonna go find him." Alex didn't wait for anyone to say something before he poofed away.
"Should we have stopped him?" Tessa asks, worried about her uncle. "What if Caleb finds him? What if-"
"He's going to be fine." Reggie cuts her off, his gaze soft. "Alex will find him, and they'll be okay." He said, sending her a reassuring smile. His hand on her shoulder gave it a gentle squeeze to comfort her, hoping to ease her worries.
"Okay." Tessa sighs, nodding her head. "Well, I should head home. It's getting late." She also figured Luke and Julie needed some time to themselves, she knew they both needed to talk. She knew she needed to have a talk with Reggie too. She and Reggie shared a look as he held her hand. She knew they both wondered if they could poof together again and they were answered by it when suddenly they're not in the garage anymore and in her bedroom. She was in her room. She let out a gasp, looking at Reggie who had a proud grin on his face.
"Oh my gosh." She breathes out. "Did we really just do that?" She asked in disbelief. She couldn't believe they were able to poof together like that. It was as if their connection was somehow allowing them to do things they never thought possible. Reggie's grin widened as he squeezed her hand gently.
"Looks like we did," He replied, his eyes shining with excitement. "Guess our connection is stronger than we thought."
Tessa couldn't help but smile back at him, feeling a surge of happiness coursing through her veins. She squeezed his hand, feeling grateful to have him by her side. "Thank you for everything, Reggie," She murmurs, her voice filled with emotion. "For being there for me, for helping me through all of this."
"I'd do anything for you, Tessa," Reggie says softly, his gaze full of affection. "I love you."
Tessa's heart skipped a beat, butterflies fluttering in her stomach. "I never said it back." She breathes out, causing him to look at her with confusion. "When you mouthed that to me before you poofed away at the Orpheum. I didn't have time to tell you back. So I'm saying it now. I love you too, Reggie."
A slow grin spread across Reggie's face, his eyes sparkling with happiness. He pulls her close, their bodies pressing together as he wraps his arms around her waist. Tessa rests her arms on his shoulders, her hands linking together behind his neck. "So, if I asked if I could kiss you right now, would you let me?" He asked, his voice barely above a whisper as he looked into her eyes.
Tessa's heart raced at the question, her cheeks flushing with warmth. She could feel the intensity of his gaze, and she knew in that moment that she wanted nothing more than to feel his lips on hers. Instead of saying anything, she pulled him by the back of his neck, closing the gap between them.
Their lips met in a passionate kiss, the heat and desire that had been building between them finally erupting. Reggie's hands moved up to cup her face, pulling her closer as their kiss deepened. Tessa melted into him, her heart soaring with happiness as their lips moved in perfect harmony. It felt like they were the only two people in the world, their connection stronger than ever as they poured all their love and longing into the kiss. Eventually, they broke apart, their breaths coming out in shallow pants as they rested their foreheads against each other's. Reggie's eyes were filled with adoration as he gazed into Tessa's, his fingers gently caressing her cheek.
"That was..." Tessa trailed off, not knowing how to describe the overwhelming feelings that were coursing through her body.
"Incredible," Reggie finishes for her, his voice filled with awe. "You're incredible."
Tessa couldn't help but beam at him, feeling giddy and lightheaded from the intensity of their kiss. "I could say the same about you," She says softly, her heart fluttering in her chest. "I can't believe you were my first kiss." She admitted with a giggle.
"I'm glad I could be your first kiss." Reggie grins, his thumb stroking her cheek. "And I hope I'll be your last kiss too." He added, his voice slightly nervous.
"I have no doubt about that," Tessa assures him, her heart skipping a beat at the thought. "You're the only one I want to kiss."
Reggie's eyes shine with joy and affection, his lips curling into a soft smile. She made him happier than he ever thought was possible, and he couldn't imagine his life without her in it. He wanted to spend the rest of eternity by her side, and he was determined to make sure she knew how much she meant to him. His face was red, his eyes shining with love and adoration as he stared down at her, his gaze soft. "I love you." He repeated, his voice filled with awe.
Tessa's breath caught in her throat, her heart racing in her chest. The way he was looking at her, the way he was holding her, the way he said those words, it was all too much. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, but not because she was sad. She was overwhelmed with joy and love. "I love you too," She replies, her voice barely above a whisper. "I never thought I'd find someone like you, but I'm so glad I did. You've changed my life in the best way possible, and I can't imagine my life without you in it."
Reggie's grin widened, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He leans forward and places a gentle kiss on her lips, making her heart skip a beat. Tessa couldn't help but melt into the kiss, feeling like she was on cloud nine. They had gone through so much together, and they knew they'd be there for each other no matter what. It made them wonder if they were always meant to meet, maybe fate had a plan all along. But Tessa didn't care about fate, destiny or whatever. All she cared about was the boy standing in front of her, the one who had changed her life for the better. The one who made her feel loved and special. The one who was her soulmate. And now they got to have their happily ever after.
