Esme (7)
Roe was agitated as we drove home, but she was trying to hide it with questions about me and Baxter. he was the most gorgeous man I had ever seen. I was as giddy as they get about his interest in me. Roe sprinkled me with question after question and told me funny scenarios she imagined. It was all very entertaining. After one meeting, I had a man who wanted to meet me for dinner tomorrow and a new best friend, as Roe declared herself.
"bye, woods girl," Roe said as she dropped me off at my apartment. I couldn't get him out of my mind all night. It was a fitful rest. My head was running rampant with scenarios of what kind of future we could have. Would he be more to the town, or would I be, as Roe said, a woods girl? I know it is crazy to imagine a future with a stranger, so I would never tell anyone I imagined it, but I couldn't stop my excitement.
The following day, Darrel and Roe were in my office. Chatting as they waited for me to come in. I froze at the sight of them.
"Hello?" I questioned, squeezing through them as I approached my chair.
"Are you excited? where is he taking you?" Darrel asked,
"Are you thinking about doing acrobatics with him after I know I would be" Roe said. I practically hissed at her for suggesting her and Baxter. Darrel elbowed her in the ribs.
"not actually, I have my own old dog I need to teach new tricks to, but I mean, I'm not blind."
"so you want to know if I am going to jump his bones tonight?" I laughed. It was a mixture of the absurdity of her comment to me, as we were basically strangers and the anger I felt when I thought she was into him.
"Ignore her. She puts her foot in her mouth a lot," Darrel said. Roe scoffed and huffed her arms. "don't get offended."
"Hey," I called out, needing to change the subject to something that wasn't me. "Who is your old dog."
"oh, the grumpy one who shattered the glass in his hands when he saw me." I vaguely remember seeing him. he was scarier than anyone else I saw when we were in the woods.
"him, really?" Darrel busted out laughing, and Roe nodded. I just couldn't imagine it. She was so friendly, and he was... well, he shattered a glass in his hand. That speaks for itself.
"the aggression turns her on," Darrel wheezed out while still laughing. Roe shoved him off my desk.
"he would never hurt me," she said. Darrel sobered up and mumbled quietly, so much so that I almost didn't hear him.
"on purpose," as if he was insinuating that there was a possibility that she would be hurt on accident.
"Well, the children are about to arrive, and I have some disciplinary meeting to handle," Darrel announced. "have fun on your date tonight; remember, we will want all the details in the morning,"
"that is very true," Roe winked at me.
"Are you seeing your man tonight," I asked Roe, considering it for a moment.
"he needs to stay at the houses to handle things while Baxter is out with you, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind if the distractions came to him. Plus, we have much to discuss, and having him be stuck in the house might be helpful." She tilted her head and stared into space. "Esme, you are a genius. I think I will visit tonight."
"You welcome," I shouted as she ran out of my office. This would be a long day for the both of us if we were waiting for tonight with bated breath.
