Baxter (6)

I was in my office with Max and McCoy. My Beta was terrorizing the pack while waiting for this last challenge. It was actually Andrew who insisted it take place at sunset. He wanted his victory over this wolf to be more dramatic. We were discussing Beta's job when my phone rang.

"Baxter" I didn't even bother to look at the caller before I answered.

"We have some problems on the horizon with that little rouge I was telling you about," Monroe's Voice hit my ears.

"you know I don't like the word problems," I Told Max and McCoy to be quiet while listening. "What happened?"

"first off, a boy who is called pack jumper by some of the other kids, his real name is Taylor Fields, nearly killed another wolf because they were being mean to her. The other kid said he would only act that way if she was his mate."

"that is a good thing her being mated to someone in the pack means getting her into the pack would be easier, and Taylor Field is the brother of our soon-to-be beta, so that would give the girl protection," McCoy perked up at the mention of his brother.

"yeah, the problem is that the girl hasn't shifted yet, so there is no bond on her end," Roe paused, "and our human guidance cancel or is going to call CPS for the girl. She doesn't trust pack wolves and can't feel the bond, so she leaves her mate. It sounds like a worst-case scenario."

"When is the guidance counselor calling?" I asked

"I told her to talk to Darrel first since he spoke to the girl this morning. He might have some more information, but she is a stand-up gal. If she doesn't contact Darrel soon, she will make the call. It is supposed to be instantaneous if you suspect you call."

"Shit! Stay on the line," I turned to Max. "Get Derrel to distract the guidance counselor. Don't let her make the call to CPS." Max nodded and closed his eyes to mind linking his mate.

"I think I can help," McCoy spoke up. "I studied to be a lawyer, and we had a very similar situation in my old pack a couple of years ago. Can I use your computer?"

"How did you handle it?" I moved to the side for him. he set to work logging into his own accounts and pulling up document after document.

"Well, we had more time, but we got a couple registered as foster parents with all their children in order, so when we called, we told the CPS worker that we had already removed the kid to a safe registered home. Then we played the small town looks out for their own as to why we didn't contact them first."

"Darrel and I are registered foster parents," Max offered

"That helps, but we need to submit the paperwork and get it looked at fast." McCoy was printing out a hefty document.

"I can enchant the document to be a top priority," Roe volunteered.

"that is a witch?" McCoy Questioned in a disgusted tone.

"she is, and she is offering to help us."

"right, I'm sorry, just not a fan of witches," he highlighted lines on the document and then passed it to Max.

"you and Darrel sign on the lines. Have the witch come over and enchant the document, then have her talk to the girl to convince her to come willingly, just in case a CPS worker shows up. Holding young girls hostage will not look good. As your lawyer, I'll talk to the human and see if I can direct how she phrases the situation to CPS."

"on it," Roe said, then hung up. Max took the paper and started signing on the lines. McCoy got up but then stopped mid-stretched, looking down at himself.

"Is there any chance I can borrow a suit?" he asked. I laughed and walked him to my office closet.

"while you are out in the real world, you need to keep a handle on that wolf of yours, so listen, before you walk into that building, I need you to feel for your wolf and try to compromise with him. Offer him equal control of the reigns. You are too wired and frayed from all the fighting to force him down. So work with him; don't overpower him," I said as he grabbed a suit.

"My father always said you need to show your wolf who the boss is." McCoy was skeptical of the idea, and I don't blame him for most of what he said is the way to go.

"Just try it, and maybe he will stop controlling you and find a balance." McCoy nodded and then raced out to change and go to the school. We have five hours before his fight to get this done.

"you think he is going rogue?" Max asked after the door was closed. "those are the type of wolves that take control of their human side."

"rouges go through something that weakens their human to the point that they can't hold back their wolf anymore, but there is another option." I sat at my desk, thinking over all I knew about McCoy. "His wolf could be so strong that the struggle is futile because they are so evenly matched, meaning that the only way through is compromising with your wolf."

"I have never heard of that?" Max returned to signing,

"It only happens in alpha-blooded wolves." This causes Max's head to pop up in alarm, but he doesn't say anything more about it.
