Chapter 7
CARMEN
There were two na laging pumupunta sa bahay—si Tita Dulce at Tita Leonora.
Lahat sila puro biyuda.
Kapag pumupunta sila sa bahay, lagi silang may dalang pagkain.
The two looked very opposite.
They were both nice and funny.
When I arrived from Canada, dumalaw sila two days later at pag-uwi, binigyan sila ni Mama ng Dove and Olay soap bars pati white Toblerone chocolates.
I shouldn't be surprised when they asked how I'm doing pero nagulat pa din ako.
Pag-alis nila, sinabi sa akin ni Mama na they knew about Helene kaya ganun na lang sila makapagtanong.
I didn't take offense naman.
It just happened that I was out of touch with what's going on at the homefront.
Nag-aaway nga kami dati dahil she tells people a lot of personal things.
Pati yung first period ko, alam ng mga kaibigan niya and I was so embarrassed then kaya inaway ko si Mama.
I yelled at her to keep some things private at hindi iyong alam ng lahat ng kapitbahay na may regla na ako.
Pero ganun talaga yata.
Very outgoing ang personality ni Mama and people are the same towards her.
I remember how Papa used to admonish her about it.
They voluntarily tell her things and that's different.
Charles was also there with his family and friends kaya ang daming tao.
Kahit nakangiti si Michelle, there was something off about her.
But since hindi naman kami close, I kept my observations to myself.
It was only when I had to go to the kitchen to get ice when I heard the tail end of their conversation.
Hindi tumigil sa pagsasalita si Christine about how big of a loser Edward was.
I grabbed the bag of ice from the fridge at iniwan ko na silang dalawa.
Dahil birthday, hindi mawawala ang inuman and videoke.
Sa aming magkakapatid, I was the one who doesn't know how to sing.
Kinakantiyawan nga ako ni Christine and Charles.
Pero kahit alam nila na sintonado ako, it doesn't stop them from asking me to sing.
Very entertaining daw kasi.
I used to be so mad kapag ginagawa nila iyon but as I got older, I learned to go with the flow.
Just like old times, pinakanta na naman nila ako.
I picked my favorite Cindy Lauper song—True Colors.
I was used to this kind of reaction.
What I didn't expect was how Michelle was looking at me as if I had the most beautiful voice in the world.
She was leaning by the doorframe holding a glass with dark brown liquid.
With the way her cheeks were turning pink, I had a hunch she wasn't drinking Coke.
Pagkatapos ng kanta, nagpalakpakan ang mga bisita.
I gamely bowed, smiled and wished Mama a happy birthday.
She was the one with the thunderous clap.
I still do it dahil it makes her happy.
Bandang alas-otso, I was talking to Carly, officemate ni Martin, ng lumapit sa akin si Christine.
Dinala niya ako sa old bedroom niya.
"What happened?"
"Pwede mo ba silang ihatid pauwi?" Christine looked worried.
"Ano bang nangyari?"
"She had a lot to drink."
"I did."
"Do you still remember kung saan siya nakatira?"
"Oo naman."
"Good. I don't want to let her drive in her condition."
Sa itsura niya, I knew there was more to this than Michelle being drunk.
Nagkatinginan kaming magkapatid at kahit hindi niya sabihin, I knew it had something to do with Edward.
Michelle was so drunk she can barely stand.
I was holding on to her waist while Christine called Zac in the living room to tell them they're going home.
"Is mommy okay?"
"Yes." Yun lang ang sagot niya.
Michelle was already snoring in the front seat and I felt bad and mad at the same time.
How can she be this irresponsible lalo na at kasama niya ang anak niya?
But I shouldn't judge her harshly since I don't know the whole story.
"Do you have your phone?"
Paalala niya.
"I won't."
Michelle was asleep on the way home.
Madilim na at there was nothing to see.
I don't know if I was wrong pero I saw sadness in his eyes too.
"Are you okay, buddy?" Tanong ko sa kanya.
"Tita, is Mommy okay?" Pabulong na tanong niya.
"Yes. I think she's just tired." I know it's bad to lie to him but what am I supposed to say?
You're mom is plastered at nakalimutan na kasama ka niya?
I would rather be a liar than an irresponsible human being.
Sumandal si Zac sa upuan.
"Don't worry, bud. I'm here and I'll make sure you get home safe."
Pagdating ko sa village nila, I had to tell the guard where I'm going.
Naglog-in ako ulit and signed the visitor sheet.
I wonder if she's a lightweight pagdating sa inuman?
But then again, I wasn't monitoring how much she's drinking dahil I was busy talking to other people.
Iniwan ko si Michelle sa loob dahil I don't want him to see how incapable she was at that moment.
Kids are smart.
Alam ko na he can tell his mom was drunk.
Kinarga ko si Zac pababa ng sasakyan and he held my hands tight.
It felt weird holding someone else's hand like that.
He clutched my fingers tightly as if he was afraid I was going to let him go.
I rang the doorbell at saglit na naghintay.
Natandaan niya yata ako from my last visit dahil ngumiti siya.
"Hi." Sabi ko.
"I'm Carmen.
Michelle better put some oil on those handlebars dahil ang sakit sa tenga.
Pagbalik ko sa sasakyan, Michelle was just waking up.
Good. Naisip ko.
I have been wondering kung gigising ba siya o hindi.
"Nandito na tayo sa inyo." Sabi ko when I opened the door.
Hindi siya nagsalita.
Bigla siyang bumaba at I was going to step aside dahil nabasa ko ang gagawin niya but I wasn't fast enough.
Great!
This night just keeps getting better.
What the fuck, Michelle? I thought to myself while she keeps retching.
Mabuti na lang at wala si Zac to witness all these dahil baka matrauma iyon.
I'm sure her neighbors will have a field day tomorrow.
Ako naman, I was seething and tightened my hold on her hair.
She was crying.
