26 | You're Like Pizza

«Flynn's POV»

The following day was Monday, which meant we had to go school. Also known as Satan's womb.

Gaige and I arrived around seven, with fifteen minutes to spare.

"Did your parents talk the situation out with the school?" I asked Gaige.

"I don't know, I'll call them. But they might not answer, because they're both at work." He answered and pulled out his phone.

The lady from the hospital (Alice, I think) told me that my phone was lost in the crash. They said that if they ever found it, they would make sure to send it to me. But it would probably be broken.

"Yo Chaste!" Gaige snapped me back into reality. "They said that they completely forgot. You're going to have to go to the office. I'll come if you want. You know, anything to get out of History, am I right?"

"You're right, obviously." I grinned. "Let's go."

"Okay."

"Okay."

"Okay."

"Okay."

"O-"

"Shut up."

"Okay."

And with that, we went off to the Principal's office. When we arrived, the assistant blushed. She was young, only about three or four years older than us. "God, Gaige," I muttered under my breath. "You didn't bang her too, did you?"

"No, I swear," Gaige answered. "Plus, I have someone else. Fawn Brooklyn."

"What? You mean that girl that you've hated since first grade?" I asked.

"Ye-" He was cut off by the woman saying something.

"Can I help you?" She asked.

"Yeah, that's why we're here," I blurted out. "We need to talk to Mr. O'Thomas, please."

"He's in his office, go right in. It's down the hall, to the right, and the third door to your left." She informed us.

"Thanks." Gaige and I said in unison and followed her directions to the room.

I knocked on the door and we heard a voice call out to come in. So we did, and found our principal at his desk filling out paperwork. "Now what do you two need? Oh, Flynn, it's nice to see you again. You realize that you have a ton of work to catch up on, right?"

"That's actually what we're here to talk about, sir." I answered.

"In that case, please continue."

"Okay, the reason I have been absent is-" I stopped when the door flew open and Madeline marched in.

"Gaige texted me to meet you guys here. Is everything okay?" She asked.

"Yeah, it's just that you're probably the most qualified to explain the situation." Gaige said.

"Right."

"So, is she going to spit it out? Or are we going to be here all day? Because I have some important paperwork to do." Mr. O'Thomas snapped.

"Salty..." I whispered to Gaige and he snickered.

"Okay," Madeline began. "Do you remember the plane crash that was all over the news?"

"Yeah, it crashed in Weirton."

"And Flynn was on that flight."

-

Long story short, it took us a long time to convince Mr. O'Thomas that I was on that plane, I did have brain cancer, and I lost all my memories from the past year. Gaige's mom had finished work around twelve and came in with paperwork-also known as proof.

And that was enough to convince our tad-bit-too-suspicious principal. So with almost a whole day wasted, I went off to my fourth block. Which was apparently PE.

I almost started going to Biology, the class that I had for fourth block the year before. But Gaige turned me around and we hustled to the gymnasium. We had three out of four of our classes together. Last year we only had one.

Last year. That was my only reference. This year. Nothing. Nothing was there. And it bothered me so much. People were counting on me to remember, but I couldn't.

And for two weeks, I was consumed with guilt and silence. I could tell that Madeline was beginning to worry about me from the constant glances and furrowed brows.

So on the day that marked my third week back at school, I tried to act like normal. I really did. I smiled more-even though they were forced, I spoke up, and I even reverted back to my usual pick up lines.

We had met up for lunch and sat outside. I picked up a slice of cheese pizza and looked at Madeline. "You know, you're like pizza."

"Even when I'm bad, I'm good?"

"Nah, you're a little doughy."

"Did you just call me fat?"

"Possibly." I grinned and she cracked a smile.

"Are you sure you're okay?" She questioned me.

No, I'm not. "I'm fine."

"So what are we going to do later today?" Gaige slid into the seat beside Madeline and looked to me.

"I think I'm just going to go back to my old house and pick up some more things." I answered.

"Want us to come?" Madeline asked.

"Nah, you're good. I'm fine by myself."

"Are you sure?" She questioned me again.

"I'm FINE." I finalized and got up to throw the rest of my lunch away.

The rest of the day flew by, as I was just reading over past notes while the rest of the class moved on to further subjects. I was being left behind, like always. My mother left me behind here, while she moved on to a better place. My father left me when he cheated on my mother. And I knew I shouldn't be pitying myself, but that was all I kept thinking. Soon enough, I would be all by myself.

I hopped into my car and took the familiar route back to my old house. Surprisingly, I found a package on the front doorstep, waiting to be opened. I went inside and tore open the wrapping.

Sitting inside was my phone, screen shattered. It looked like a spider had decided to make a web on the screen.

I pressed the power button and it came to life. There were tons of notifications, but only one mattered.
