The Almost Slip-Up and the Talk with Phil

Riley's shaky hands ran through her hair as she stared at the wall in front of her.

"Tell me what's wrong, Riley." Leslie basically demanded. She thought back to earlier when she saw Riley talking to Dean. She had already looked upset then, but this was definitely something ten times as bad.

"Did Dean say something to you?" Leslie asked, "You know how much of an asshole he can be."

Riley shook her head, violently as she sobbed, "No, he didn't say anything to me.

"Then what's wrong?" Leslie asked, joining her friend on the floor.

Leslie looked over at her. It had been a while since she had seen Riley cry like this. It was obvious that she was truly upset.

Riley gulped, "I haven't been completely honest with you...any of you."

"About what?" Leslie asked, quietly.

"Everything." Riley sobbed, "No one can know about this."

Leslie tried her hardest to wipe away Riley's flowing tears. She didn't understand what was going on and she was actually scared to find out what it was. This was he first time that Riley had been this upset since the accident.

"Tell me, please." Leslie begged, softly. Riley finally looked over at her. Her eyes bright and puffy as she took heavy breaths.

"You'll never look at me the same." She told Leslie. Leslie shook her head.

"You're my best friend, Riley. You can tell me anything and I won't ever change the way I look at you."

"You'll think I'm crazy."

"In case, you haven't noticed, I'm just as crazy as you are."

Riley laughed through her tears.

"Please just tell me, what happened." Leslie said, softly.

Riley looked away from her, clearly scared. She didn't want Leslie to judge her. What she did would probably make her a little bit crazy and stupid. There was absolutely no explanation for her actions, but this was her best friend. Leslie didn't need any explanations, she just wanted a simple answer.

With a small, shaky sigh, Riley started her story.

24 hours earlier

"You know, making me run laps around the ring, isn't going to make me a better wrestler for next week." Riley heaved out as she ran past him.

Dean rolled his eyes, not looking up from his phone, "Don't question how I train you, be glad I'm doing it."

"I didn't realize training meant paying attention to your phone instead of paying attention to the girl you're training." Riley called from the other side of the ring.

She lost count of how many times she has run around the ring. Dean thought it would be a good way to build up her endurance, and she understood that. She just hated that he was too busy with his phone to realize that she's been running around the ring for almost twenty minutes.

Dean glanced over at her, "How about you continue to do as I tell you instead of questioning me? You should be grateful that I'm taking some of the time that I could be training to train you."

Riley suddenly stopped in front of him as she glared at him, "I'm so deeply sorry that I'm keeping you sex deprived for an hour. Your fuck buddy will understand."

"Don't say that I'm wasting your training time because we both know that you wouldn't be using this extra time to train." Riley added. Dean stared at her, clearly not knowing what time say, "Now, stop being a dick and start actually paying attention to my training. I'm debuting in a week and I am nowhere near prepared."

Dean smirked, "When did you start caring so much about my personal life or my sex life with Nikki?"

Riley rolled her eyes, "About the same time that you decided to ditch three of our training sessions this past week."

"We don't need to train every day, Riley. You can easily figure everything out without my help." He told her.

"In case you haven't noticed, you're the expert and I'm not." She argued, "I can't easily figure everything out on my own."

"Maybe if you would actually remember something relevant then-" She immediately cut him off.

"Who's fault is it that my memory's gone in the first place?" She asked, angrily.

Dean just stared at her. She didn't want to bring up the accident because she knew how guilt Dean had felt about it. Dean may be a jerk, but whenever the accident was mentioned, he would act like a completely different person. If he was being a jerk to Riley -- or to anyone at the moment then he would forget about what had made him act like a jerk in the first place. It was as if the guilt would take over him.

"Who told you about the car accident?" He asked. Riley looked at him confused.

"What are you talking about?" She asked.

"The car accident, Riley. Who told you that I was driving?" He asked, more clearly, "Unless I am mistaken, I didn't realize that anyone told you that."

"No one needed to tell me." She told him. She clearly didn't want to throw anyone under the bus. He didn't want Riley to know that he was behind the wheel that night. It was as if Riley could hate him more than she really did.

"Did Leslie-"

"Don't worry about it, Dean." She said, interrupting him, "Now, let's get to training."

Dean gave her a sceptical look. He sighed, choosing to ignore her sudden defensiveness.

"Let's go."

"Hey, what's up?" Riley asked, answering her phone.

"Dad is very pissed." Leslie said.

Riley rolled her eyes, "When isn't he? What'd we do now?"

Leslie sighed, "Your phone bill came this week and Dad had all your calls checked."

"Why would he do that? Does he think I'm hiding something from him?" She questioned. She didn't understand why he dad thought it was okay to ask for a list of her calls. She didn't have anything to hide, but that didn't matter. He had no reason to ask for a list of her calls.

"Riley, there's about four calls from the MCC, and trust me, Dad may have a good reason to be pissed." She answered. She didn't understand why Riley would want to even think about talking to him after what she remembered.

The MCC. The Metropolitan Correctional Center. The facility where Kenny was currently being held. Kenny was clearly the only reason that she would be getting calls from the MCC. She knew why her dad was upset, he had a reason to be upset. She swore not to talk to him, especially after she found out what he did to Leslie.

"I-I haven't accepted any of his calls, Les." Riley lied. She had accepted one, but it was only because she was curious. She had only three minutes to talk to Kenny, and Kenny had a lot to say in those three minutes.

He sure knew how to use his words to create doubt. Riley had a small amount of doubt that he actually did anything at all to end up in prison. The only thing that kept her from believing that was her best friend's nightmares.

Leslie sighed, "I don't need you lying to me, Ri." She ran a hand through her hair, "If you talked to him, then just tell me. I won't tell Dad...I promise."

"Fine, Les." She said with a small sigh, "I talked to him once. He did most of the talking because after I rejected his first three calls, he kind of assumed that I already knew the truth. He was trying to convince me that I wasn't looking closely into what actually happened to you."

"And did you believe him?" She asked.

"No, Leslie, I would never. He has a way with his words, but I know that there is too much evidence against him." Riley said.

"Riley-"

Riley's phone beeped, interrupting Leslie. It was a signal that another call was trying to come in. Riley pulled the phone away from her ear to see who was calling, but the number was unknown.

"Please don't tell me that it's the facility calling again."

Riley bit her lip, "I'll call you back, Les."

"Riley, don't you dare answer it."

Riley ignored her as she pressed on the answer button. Leslie's call was immediately put on hold as she put the phone to her ear.

"You are about to receive a call from an inmate at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. If you do not wish to accept this call, hang up now."

Riley debated on whether or not she should answer the call. The last time that he called, Kenny had nothing but bad things to say about Leslie. She couldn't help but wonder what he wanted. Maybe he actually just wanted to have a nice conversation instead of calling her friend a liar.

"Your call will be connected shortly." The automated voice spoke, "Please remember that the three minute call will be recorded for the safety of the inmate and the person that is receiving this call."

Riley sighed, softly. She didn't want to regret choosing to accept the call, but she had a feeling that she probably would.

"Riley, it's great to know that you finally stopped ignoring me."

Ever since finding out what happened between him and Leslie, it was like she would get chills just hearing his voice. It was a if she could hear the sadistic tone that he had in his voice. She had never heard it in his voice before, so it was weird hearing it now.

"Riley, are you there?" Kenny asked. He had clearly remembered dialing the correct number.

"I'm here, Kenny." Riley muttered into the phone.

"How you doing, baby?" Kenny asked, "Still being oblivious to everything?"

"Kenny, why'd you call?" She asked, "Wouldn't you rather spend your three minutes calling your mom or anyone but me?"

Kenny chuckled, clearly not knowing that she was upset, "I would prefer to speak to you, baby. Why would I want to speak to anyone, but you?"

Riley rolled her eyes, "I thought I had made it clear that I didn't want to be receiving any more calls from you."

"And why is that, huh?" Kenny questioned. His nice mood was suddenly changing, "Is it because you think that your best friend could never do anything wrong?"

"Kenny, why would Leslie constantly have nightmares about you, if you actually didn't do anything?" She asked, rhetorically, "There's too much evidence against you, and it's pretty obvious with how defensive you get."

Kenny sighed, heavily, "I don't want to fight with you about this again, Ri."

"Then stop calling me." She said, harshly.

"Who won't stop calling you?"

Riley jumped, dropping her phone to the floor. She turned around, her eyes immediately meeting a pair of blue eyes.

"God, you scared the shit out of me, Dean." Riley said, trying to calm her racing heart. Dean looked down at the phone that was now laying next to his feet.

"Riley? What happened?"

Dean reached down and grabbed the phone.

"Dean, wait, I'm talking to someone extremely important." She said, heading towards him. Dean gave her an odd look.

"Are you-"

"Riley, are you still there?"

Dean looked at the phone before looking over at Riley, "Please don't tell me that-that's who I think it is."

Riley opened her mouth to argue.

"Riley, I have less than 30 seconds."

Dean brought the phone up to his ear, "Don't ever call this number again, Kenny. There should be some damn law to keep you from contacting you victims. This better be the last time that you call this number."

Dean immediately hung up.

"What the hell was that, Dean?" Riley asked, grabbing her phone from Dean's hand. Dean clearly didn't understand why she was mad. She should be happy that Dean had told Kenny off, and maybe now he wouldn't think about calling again.

"Don't get all pissed." Dean told her, "Be glad that I may have just made sure that he wouldn't call again. You don't need to be talking to that asshole."

"I could have easily told him that myself." She said, angrily, "Who said that I didn't want to keep talking to him? He's the only person that's been one hundred percent honest with me, even if he is an asshole."

Dean crossed his arms, "He lied to you about Leslie. There's a lot of things that you don't know about him, Riley."

"And I wouldn't know because you don't tell me." She argued.

"Be glad you don't know what happened." He told her, "If you would know then maybe you wouldn't be so damn happy to be receiving his calls from prison."

"I'm not happy to hear from him. I know what he did to my best friend."

"And that doesn't stop you from accepting his calls." He said, "You want to be all buddy with him then you should really know what he did."

Riley just stared at him. She wanted to know what Kenny did. She wanted to know why they all wanted him gone forever. She knew what he did to Leslie, but it seemed like everyone had something else against him.

"Tell me then." Riley muttered.

Dean clearly didn't have any hesitation about telling her. He thought that she had the right to know about the man who calls her whenever he has phone time in jail. Kenny didn't deserve to talk to Riley as if he did nothing wrong. Riley had to know the truth and he was going to be the one to tell her.

"Look, Riley, Kenny did many bad things to Leslie, but he also did some terrible things-"

"I want you to try finishing that sentence, Good."

Riley looked away from Dean. Dean closed his eyes in frustration. He was so close to finally telling her the truth about Kenny, but as always, something had to interrupt him.

"Phil, I didn't know you were showing up." Dean said, not bothering to face him.

"Dad!" Riley immediately took off towards her father. It had been a couple of weeks since she's seen him. They have both been so busy training. Phil was training for his long-awaited return to the ring, while Riley was training for her debut.

Phil lifted her into his arms, clearly happy to see her, "I missed you, sweetheart."

Dean finally turned to lock eyes with Phil. Phil was glaring at him over his daughter's shoulder. Dean glared back at him, clearly not understanding why he was pissed. He had no reason to be mad. He wasn't going to tell Riley anything, but the complete truth about Kenny. Phil should be grateful that someone was actually about to be honest with his daughter.

"Leslie said that you were mad not even twenty minutes ago, so I assumed that you were in Chicago." Riley said. Phil smiled down at her.

"That happened hours ago. I took the first flight out here to see how you were doing." Phil said, before looking over at Dean, "I'm glad I showed up just in time."

"I don't know if that's a good thing, Phil." Dean told him.

Phil sent him a look, "Riley, sweetheart, the car is waiting outside to take us to dinner. You should go wait in the car."

"But Dad-" Riley tried to argue.

"Riley." Phil warned, sternly. Riley looked over at Dean.

Riley sighed. She didn't want to argue with her dad. He obviously wanted to talk to Dean alone, but she knew that they wouldn't just be talking. She knew how angry Dean could make her Dad, which is why she didn't want to leave them alone. It was more for Dean's sake than anything.

"I'll be in the car." She said, softly. She walked through the doors, not wanting to look back at them.

"I thought we had a deal." Phil told him as soon as Riley was out of sight.

Dean rolled his eyes, "Whether we had a deal or not, Riley deserves to know the truth about what Kenny did to her."

"The doctor said not to overwhelm her with any memories. Do you not think that this is the most overwhelming thing that you can tell her about?" Phil said, "You have no right to tell her about this, Dean."

"I have no right to tell her about this?" Dean asked, rhetorically as he motioned to himself. He chuckled, dryly before motioning to Phil, "At least I'm sticking by her side unlike you who has been keeping to yourself in Chicago. Try dealing with her when she's basically fucking begging you to tell her one small memory."

"You have no damn right, Dean! I don't care if she's fucking begging you, you have no right!" Phil suddenly yelled, "You're the reason that she's at the place that she is right now. I'm fucking sorry that I don't want the man, that is the reason she lost her memory in the first place, to be the one to tell her about all the memories."

"Why'd you send her off with me in the first place?" Dean asked, angrily, "If you hate me so damn much for being the reason that Riley is where she is right now, then why don't you take time out of your oh so busy schedule to train her yourself?"

"You're right. I don't know why I would send her off with you. I can't believe that I let myself do something so stupid." Phil said, placing his hands on his hips, "She may not remember this, but you have been the cause of two much of her pain in the past. You were the cause of the damn car accident. Do you really think that helping her now will help you get rid of all the guilt that you have felt since the accident?"

"You were pissed off at her before the accident and you're just trying to fix that aren't you?" Phil asked, not giving Dean time to answer, "Nothing that you do will change the fact that you have been the reason for all of this."

Dean just stared at him. He didn't know what to say. Phil was right about everything. Dean was the reason that everything happened, and there was nothing Dean could do to make up for it. He couldn't fix the past because sooner or later, Riley was going to remember everything. He didn't even know if he wanted to fix his future with Riley anymore. He had hurt Riley too much in the past for it to just happen again. He couldn't let that happen again.

"You're right Phil...about everything." Dean muttered. Phil crossed his arms as he looked away from him.

"I'm taking Riley back to Chicago and I'll finish training myself, something I should have done from the beginning."

Dean watched as Phil walked away. This was probably the last time he would see Riley. If he wasn't going to train her then this was it. He would probably see her at her debut, but that was it. After that, they would both be on the road with different schedules. Dean knew he wouldn't see her for a while because of that.

He knew that this was for the best, but he couldn't help but think that he made a mistake.

I feel like this chapter is shorter than others, but at least one is out. I'm sorry it's so late, but I've had a lot of stuff going on lately.

Hope you guys enjoyed.
