Chapter 9

I giggled when I saw the scene playing out. Another turtle dressed in red, Raph I assumed, balanced on the edge of the pool of water in the living room, wobbling a little on the wooden pole he was perched on, hands out and to the side.

"Think you've got the skill to be a real kunoichi?" Raph taunted Annabeth, who teetered on another rod opposite him, "Let's see who cracks first. First to fall in owes the other ten bucks."

Anna tugged at the hem of her white tank habitually as she swayed on her pole, "You're on, Hothead!"

Leo walked out to stand beside Mikey and I, rolling his eyes subtly as he watched the two of them. "Get down from there!"

"Oh, cut it out, Leo, they're just having fun," Mikey sighed, eyes never leaving his red clad brother and Annabeth.

"Ha!" Annabeth smirked as Raph wobbled dangerously on his pole, "I am so gonna win this! You just can't handle the—"

She trailed off when she caught sight of Donnie sauntering out of the kitchen, freezing when he cocked his head to the side and asked, "What are you doing up there?"

"Donnie!" Anna suddenly smiled, fiddling with her hair nervously, "Uh, Raph and I were just— "

"Anna?" Raph interrupted, a knowing grin on his face.

"What?" She said irritably, looking away from the turtle in purple to glare at him.

"You owe me ten bucks."

"What? I—GAHH!!" Annabeth shrieked as the wooden pole slipped out from under her feet, sending her plunging into the pool below.

I cracked up laughing, although the action made my side ache more than usual. Mikey joined in, chuckling softly as he watched Anna come up sputtering.

"Raphael Hamato," She spat as she dragged herself out of the water, soaking wet, "I swear, if it's the last thing I do, I'm gonna beat you at something...what?"

Everyone's jaws had fallen open, and my laughs increased in volume. Annabeth scowled, wringing out her hair. "What're you guys staring at?"

Mikey only pointed to her, holding back his own laughter. My friend's eyes widened as she glanced down to see her white tank top was now completely see-through, revealing her lavender lace bra. Her face turned beet red as she looked up quickly, eyes meeting Donatello's for a moment before she quickly crossed her arms over her chest and raced out, crying out in panic over and over, "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god...!" As she ran to the bathroom and slammed the door behind her.

My laughs trailed off, seeing her rush out like that, and I cleared my throat a little. "I'll uh...I'll go check on her."

I began to hobble toward the bathroom, glancing at each of the turtles; Leo and Mikey looking awkwardly uncomfortable with the whole situation, Raph smirking smugly in his victory, and Donnie seemingly in shock. I knocked softly on the door, "Anna? Can I come in?"

"Go away," She shouted between quiet sobs. My gaze hardened, and I pushed open the door.

"I told you to...," Anna whirled around, eyes red and a towel in her hand as she dabbed at the front of her shirt, "Oh. It's you."

"Yeah, it's me," I replied, walking in and closing the door behind me, "Need some help?"

Annabeth hung her head ashamedly, plopping down on the closed toilet lid. "That was beyond embarrassing."

"Hey, it's okay," I assured her, "No one's making fun of you..."

She buried her head in her hands, "This is great. Just great."

I sighed, walking over to her and easing the towel from her hands, beginning to pat her hair dry with it. "It's no big deal..."

"No big deal?" Anna tilted her head up to look at me, "Sadie, these past couple months have been a living hell for me."

I was a bit taken aback -- Annabeth's cursing was always mild, but it always caught me off guard when she used choice words. "Why?"

She sighed dejectedly, fixing her gaze back on the wall in front of her. "First, I lose my friend to some girl, then I start to lose the guy of my dreams to some girl, and now I've just made a fool of myself in front of him. That was just the cherry on top. I mean, how horrifying is that? He saw my...," She glanced down hopelessly at her translucent tank, still not concealing her brightly colored bra.

"Who?" I asked, confused in general. It was my friend's habit to speak in the vaguest ways possible.

Another sigh. "Donatello," Was all she muttered, glancing at the closed bathroom door wistfully.

I gaped. "He's the guy you're going on and on about? Donnie?"

She turned to scowl slightly at me. "What's wrong with Donnie? He's a genius, and he's sweet, and handsome...and gosh, those brown eyes of his just about make me melt every time he looks at me..."

I wrinkled my nose at her dreamy look, but her dazed smile soon faded as she cast her eyes down and mumbled, "But he likes another girl."

"Another girl?" I asked, squeezing the ends of her hair to rid it of moisture.

"April O'Neil," Anna muttered, like the name was an infectious disease.

"Well, what does she have that you don't?"

"Hmm...prettier than me, smarter than me, cooler than me. Oh, and let's not forget - Donnie's been head-over-heels for her since the day they met."

I pursed my lips, setting aside the towel once I was convinced her hair wasn't going to get any drier. "Don't compare yourself to her. It just tortures you even more."

"Does it matter?" She asked, tears gathering in her eyes, "I'm going through so much torture already, what's a bit more gonna do? And with Mikey always so distant, I barely had anyone to talk to about this for months..."

"Well you've got me to talk to, now. Why has he been distant?" I came around to lean against the counter in front of Annabeth, giving her a comforting smile.

She sniffled, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand as she said, "He got his heart broken by some chick, Renet. He used to be... I dunno, happy, more outgoing... He may have had the brain of a five year old, but that's just what made him, him. And now... He's just always thinking, about Renet, about how happy she made him, about how heartbroken he is. Reality hit him like a bus, I guess, when she broke up with him."

I felt a flare of annoyance at the mention of this girl. Why in the world would anyone want to break up with Mikey?

"He seems fine, though," I offered hesitantly, reflecting on the past few days I'd known him.

"You don't know Mikey like I did, Sadie," Anna insisted, standing up and brushing past me to look at herself in the mirror, "He used to be the glue of this team, he used to be the lovable party dude who cared about everyone's happiness. He kept his brothers smiling. And now he's so caught up in mourning, he doesn't even pay attention to anyone else. I miss the care-free Mikey, I suppose..."

"Have you ever thought what that must be like for him?" I cut her off,  putting my hands on my hips, "Having to stay happy for everyone else? It's a big burden, if you think about it, having to keep a smile on your face when everything else in life is turning to crap. So, I'm not sure I blame him for becoming more reserved with his feelings."

I was suddenly angry. At Renet, at Annabeth, at Mikey's brothers, at anyone who thought Mikey wasn't the same person, because of heartbreak.

"You don't understand," She insisted, "He's basically been throwing a pity party for himself for the past few months!"

"What, like you are right now, thinking about Donnie?" I shot back.

Anna was at a loss for words for a moment, before murmuring, "That's different..."

"How is it different?" I demanded, "You're both crying over someone you don't think you'll ever have. You're both completely heartbroken. If I were you, I'd try being his shoulder to cry on, for once, since it seems like he was there for you."

"Sadie, Mikey is being--"

"Ridiculous? Unreasonable?" I asked heatedly, reaching for the door knob, "Just think about this, Anna - you're in no place to be judging him and how he feels. Because really, you and him are in the same boat."

I threw open the door, shuffling out and closing it in my friend's face, my fiery temper making tears spring into my eyes. I huffed, furiously forcing myself not to cry, as I hurried as best I could back to the living room. The Turtles, idly going about their business, looked up at me as I entered, their eyes expectant, except for Mikey, who stayed transfixed with the television.

"She'll be fine," I mumbled, adding an edge to my voice that would hopefully communicate that I didn't want to talk. It did.

I struggled into a sitting position beside Mikey, ignoring the quizzical looks I was given by his brothers. I glanced over at the orange-clad turtle, eyes intently on the screen, though I could tell he noticed my presence.

My head swirled with angry thoughts - Annabeth should have helped him, she should have been there, she was a traitor to him for not being there, she used him for her own petty needs, to make her feel better about herself...

And then I stopped. Because I realized I was scolding myself with each cold thought directed at my friend. Was I really any better? I was about to try and win these guys' trust, and then I would be the one to benefit when they were in Scorpion's clutches. I didn't have a choice in the matter - if I didn't go through with my mission, I'd be punished. Severely. But it occurred to me that I was no better than anyone here. I was the traitor.

"You okay?"

I glanced over to see Mikey with a frown on his face, and noticed that my flustered thinking had transferred into my facial expression.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I said, pushing away the nagging reminder that soon, I'd have to turn him in, to betray him too. I turned to the TV. "So, what're you watching?"
