Chapter 7: What's Kraken My Dudes
Maya held her hand up as she swam, lighting the way with her newfound powers. "Just a warning, if these powers stop working just out of the blue. It's not my fault." Maya began "I only just found out on accident, that I have powers."
"Don't worry Maya, we understand, it does after all take years to master powers." Cordelia replied as she looked around.
"Whoa, did Cordelia Cove just agree with Maya Lynn?" Nile questioned.
"Shush, no one asked for your input."
"Did Cordelia Cove just snap at Nile Po?" Maya joked.
"Both of you, shush."
"We're only joking Delia." Nile smiled "C'mon, we've gotta keep looking for clues."
"No seriously, both of you shut up, I heard something." The group looked around, as they looked, something crept out of the shadows of the dark water "What was that your sister said Nile? Stay away from the What cave?"
Nike's eyes widened "The Kraken Cave!" He yelled "Everyone! Swim away!"
The trio swam back the direction they came, only for their path to be blocked by huge black tentacles. "What do we do?!" Maya exclaimed.
"We'll have to fight it!" Nile replied "I've never fought something this big."
"I have." Cordelia said softly. "Get Maya outta here."
"We can't just leave you!" Maya exclaimed "Nile, please tell me we're not gonna leave her!"
Nile looked worriedly at the tentacles that were slowly closing in. "Maya-" He began.
"So." A dark voice interrupted from the shadows "Yer the one with Me crown?"
"What?" Maya exclaimed "Who are you?"
The voice laughed as a man with octopus legs drifted into the light. He was overweight, and his greybeard was long overdue for a trim. "I, am Atlas. The Rightful Ruler of Atlantis." He glared at Maya. "Yer, Maya Lynn, are ye not?"
"I... I am, but why would I have-"
"A crown! The thief must be working for him!" Nile exclaimed
Atlas sniggered darkly "Aye, the thief did in fact do me bidding. She was real helpful young lass." He smirked "I was told Maya Lynn would have the crown, and no one is leavin' 'til I get me crown."
Cordelia summoned her blade "Even if we had it we wouldn't give it to the likes of you." the blonde glared
Atlas frowned "I don't like this one." And with that, a tentacle smacked Cordelia into the wall of the cave
"Cordelia!" Maya yelled
Atlas smiled evilly as Maya swam over to Cordelia. "An odd thing to see, a girl without her tail. Summon yer tail girl, show us who ye are." He demanded. The red-headed girl ignored the evil siren "Show us yer tail wench."
"Cordelia are you okay?" Maya asked, still ignoring Atlas
Cordelia sat on the cave floor clutching her rib cage "I think that thing crushed my ribs." she said weakly "It's hard to breathe."
Atlas snapped his fingers, and the tentacle grabbed Cordelia's tail. "Say hello to me friend here. Siren, meet Kraken."
"Cordelia!" Maya yelled as she swam after the tentacle
"Maya!" Nile called as he looked for a way past a tentacle that was coming towards him "Think about something you care about!" He yelled "Think about something you need to save! Something you need to live!"
"You sound like a children's superhero show!"
"Just do it!"
Maya thought. She thought as hard as she could, everything she thought of, was her friends. Darya, Nile, Cordelia. She hardly noticed the bright light shining behind her, or her legs turning into a tail. She sped up, and grabbed Cordelia's wrists. "Ma... Maya." Cordelia breathed, then smiled "Let... Let go."
"No! I'm gonna save you!" Maya exclaimed as she tried to pull Cordelia free
"Lynn. Pr... Promise me."
"Promise you what?"
"D... Don't let Nile... Date anyone stupid... No one.... No one stupider than.... Then you Ly... Lynn." Cordelia was pulled away from Maya, and towards the Kraken
"No!" Maya shrieked as the kraken ate her blonde friend. Blood floated through the water, and stained the kraken's beak
"That's no fish's tail girl." Atlas glared "Who are ye really?"
Maya floated, staring at the blood-stained kraken. A weight in her hand. She looked down, and opened her hand. A gold bracelet. Tears filled Maya's eyes. She and Cordelia had never gotten along. Not once, had the blonde let the red-head near anything the princess owned. The Princess of The Red Sea's kingdom. Gone. Maya put on the bracelet, all she had left of someone who she'd just begun to get along with. "I. Don't. Have. To. Answer. To. You." Maya turned to look Atlas dead in the eye. Her newly formed white tail flicked in the water "I. Am Maya Croca Lynn. I don't know who I'm supposed to be. But I do know that you just had my friend killed." A shining ball of light appeared in Maya's hand. "You've just flown too close to the sun." She threw the light at Atlas, and swam away grabbing Nile's arm as she did. "Let's go."
"She-" Nile began
"She did." tears would have dripped from maya's eyes, had they been on land. "She did Nile."
"Did you-"
"I did."
"Your tail."
"We'll address that in a little bit, right now we're trying not to die." The two kept swimming until they reached the bridge above them. "We need to get back to your castle." Maya calmly said "You have guards, they can do something about this."
"We need to calm down for a second."
"I'm calm. I am completely calm."
"Maya." Nile grabbed Her hands "You just threw a ball of light, at evil pirate Santa."
Maya's mind finally processed what had just happened. Her eyes went wide "Nile, she... She's gone." Tears filled her eyes again "Nile, what're we gonna do? And her sister at camp? Nile we just watched her-" She began to cry into Nile's shoulder
"I know Maya... " Nile sighed "I know."
"Nile, her sister, what're, what're we gonna tell her?"
"You don't have to tell her. I'll tell Ruby what happened, It'll be okay."
"What if she hates us for not being able to save her?" Maya sobbed
"Shh, it's okay." Nile comforted her as he looked at her bag "He..." Nile began again "He said you have the crown, do you-"
"If I have it, I... I promise I didn't know." Maya interrupted, still teary eyed
Nile took her bag, opened it, it was filled with snack wrappers. He looked for a minute, and saw something that was shining. He pulled it out, "The Crown." Nile gasped "Did you-"
"Nile, no, Nile, I swear, I didn't. I swear on the sea."
Nile looked at the crown. "We need to get this to the Siren Castle. We need to tell them what happened down there."
Maya nodded. The two began to swim, not noticing the black tentacle that was snaking its way up out of the crevasse. Reaching towards Maya. It grabbed her sparkling tail, and began to pull her back towards the canyon "Nile!" She screamed fearfully
"Maya!" Nile swam after her, and grabbed her wrists
"Don't let go, please." Here eyes were wide with fear as she began to slip out of Nile's grasp
Nile's eyes flicked from Maya, to the tentacle, and back to Maya. He summoned his spear "Don't worry." He threw the spear at the tentacle. The sharp point stabbed into the skin of the Kraken's arms "Hey Kraken! Keep your hands to yourself!" He yelled as the tentacle retreated back into the dark depths. "Maya, are you okay!?" Nile exclaimed as he looked back at Maya who was looking at her tail
"I... I didn't realize my tail looked... Like this."
"This isn't a fish tail, that's for sure."
"No, maybe it's a Betta Fish tail?"
"No, it'd be bigger if it was." Nile looked towards the Siren side "We need to get going, we need to reach the Siren castle before dark."
"Why?"
"Krakens like the dark."
