Chapter 14: The Crown

Maya swam as fast as she could through the hall. "It has to be this way..." She mumbled as she sped through the hall. "C'mon... I need to stop Atlas!" She ran into Aphrodite. "Hey Mom."

"Other way Maya." The black haired queen laughed.

"What? But Darya said-"

"She must've been confused, now come on, we need to stop your uncle."

"Yeah, that makes sense." Maya mumbled as she followed her mom. They arrived in the crown's room, the crown had been returned to its pedestal once Maya and Nile had brought it back. "So, what do I do?" Maya asked as she picked up the crown. "Do I just put it on?"

"I think so.."

"What'll happen if I can't control it?"

"I... Don't know..."

"What happened to the last person who tried to use it?"

Atlas' laugh rang through the room. "I'll tell yah what happened to 'im!" The old man swam out of the shadows. "He learned the truth about Atlantis, about the seas. He learned that, even though he was heir, he was destined to have to fight for what was rightfully his." Atlas cackled "He had to go behind his mother and father's back to find that he was able to control the crown, and was afterwards banished to a small, dark, clearing in a forest of kelp."

"Was Atlas the last one to try on the crown?"

"If he was, I didn't kno-" Aphrodite began.

"Keep yah lies to yahself little sister!" Atlas angrily growled as he chucked his tridant at Aphrodite, only for Iris to dive in front of her.

"Iris!" Aphrodite screamed as the trident stabbed into Iris' tail. "Monster!"

Maya quickly grabbed the crown and hugged it to her chest. "Give me the crown girl." Atlas scowled.

"What'll happen if I can't control it."

"Yah'll go mad girlie." Atlas spoke, thinking this'll make Maya give him the crown.

The redheaded princess looked to her mother and stepmother. "That's a risk I'm willing to take." She placed the silvery crown on her head. The red gemstones that were scattered across the crown turned white, the crown itself changed completely, from a crown to a tiara, sparkling with diamonds and twilight sapphires. "Mom, it changed, is that a good thing?" Maya called as she took the tiara off. "Well, I guess it's the Tiara of Atlantis now." Maya laughed. "Get it, 'cus it's a tiara now, because a crown is... Nevermind, it was funny to me."

"GIVE IT TO ME!" Atlas yelled as he lunged at Maya.

Maya screeched and swam out of the way. "Mom! What do I do!?"

"Try using your powers!" Aphrodite called to her as some guards came in to help.

Maya saw the guards take Iris, then turned to look at Atlas. She chucked a ball of blue light at Atlas. "Take that Evil Pirate Santa!" She screeched.

Atlas shouted several curses when he was hit by the ball of light, a large burn appeared where he'd been hit. "Little..." Several minutes of swearing followed.

Maya threw another ball of light at him, this time a lavender ball of light. "Watch your language! You salty old fart!"

Atlas laughed before being hit again. "Is that the best insult you can come up with you infinite deal of nothing!"

Maya stopped for a second, a questioning look on her face. "Huh?" She questioned quietly. "What does that even mean?" Maya thought for a moment. "Whatever..." She looked at her hand. "Could I maybe, make a weapon out of..." She focused for a second, a long sword formed out of blue light in her hand. "Whoa it worked." She looked at Atlas. "Okay, bring it on Atlas." She got ready to fight. "Wait... I don't know how to use a sword!" The sword turned into a recurve bow. "Sweet! I can work with this... Wait would a bow work underwater?" Atlas started to swim at her. "Nevermind, it'll have to do." She shot an arrow at Atlas, hitting his shoulder.

"You little piece of trash!" He yelled as he pulled the arrow out, burning his hand in the process, as the arrow was made of light.

"I can do it again." Maya prepared another arrow of light.

"I'll end you. I'll end all of you." He glared angrily as he swam towards the window of the room. "Or, at least my kraken will, I'll take the crown from your corpse."

The Kraken rose behind him, and reached for Maya, who in response shot at the massive grey creature. In the chaos Atlas swam away, escaping the royal guard. "Mom!" Maya called to Aphrodite. "Mom he's getting away!"

Aphrodite looked at her daughter. "We'll take care of the Kraken! You get Atlas!"

Just that second Maya remembered something, "Where's Nile!?"

"He's fine, he went back to the Mermaid Castle last night after the ball, I'm sure he's fine."

"Right. Okay." Maya breathed. "I'll take care of Atlas." She swam after her evil uncle, clutching her bow made of light.

Maya caught up with Atlas, at the edge of a kelp forest. "You're stronger than you look girlie." He spoke as Maya drew back her bow. "How about yah join me, help me take over Atlantis, You'll still get to be heir."

"LALALALALALALALALALALALA, CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER HOW MUCH OF A TRAITOR TO YOUR KIND YOU ARE!" Maya yelled obnoxiously as she shot her bow, the arrow hit Atlas in the tail.

"Yah missed where it'd kill me."

"I don't kill. That's the difference between a good guy and a bad guy."

"Then yer mother is no better than me girlie."

"I won't believe a thing you say."

"What'd she tell you happened to yer father girlie."

"You killed him."

"Is that the lie she's been spewin'?" Atlas laughed "I Injured 'im. Never killed 'im."

"Liar!"

"Ah, but you were a baby, how would yah know?"

"I... I don't believe you!"

"Yer smart I'm sure." Atlas smirked. "Yah'll figure it out 'ventually."

"I'll never believe you!"

"You will when yah learn the truth Lass."

With that Atlas disappeared into the forest of kelp, leaving Maya alone. Leaving her alone to question what had happened fifteen years ago.
