The beginning of their ends

Cyn's eyes snapped open, her room dark and silent. She slowly sat herself up, the silk sheets retreating away from her body as she turned to face the alarm clock that was on her bedside table. Three A.M written out in it's digital form cut through the darkness, the green light annoying the girl slightly. She groaned, annoyance settling over her as she clambered out of bed, her feet touching the cool surface of the floor as she made her way to the bathroom.

Figments of her recent dream whispered at her, flashes of them taking over her sight which made her annoyance grew and grew. Familiar voices called out to her, familiar words being sounded as she turned on the lights to meet her tired self in the mirror.

"I expect you to be better then that!"

"Did I tell you to stop? No? Then why aren't you completing the exercise!"

"You're worthless to me. Why did I bother having you? Your sister and brother are much better. Unlike you they're perfect."

Expect....

Perfect....

Cold water caressed Cyn's face as she splashed the liquid on to it, trying to wake herself up more and trying to be rid of the dream and quiet the voices. She turned the tap off and looked back up at the mirror, a rather plain expression settled over her face. Doing well to hide the inner turmoil she was facing.

Useless to me...

Expect....

Expectations...

Be like this....

Change yourself...

Failure.....

"Failure?" She asked, looking around the empty room. "Me? The failure?" She barked out a laugh, finding the idea so very humorous.

"I am the failure? I am the pathetic one?" She screeched, turning her head around frantically as the words got louder and louder.

"Who's the one that's still alive? Who's the one that has survived? If i was the failure of the family then tell me how it was possible for me to kill you, you bitch?!" She screamed

"C'mon! I know you're there!" She shouted, spreading out her arms, to say she was open for attacks.

She laughed when she saw nothing happen, finding more humor in that. "What are you? Scared of me? Do you fear me now?"

She threw her head back, laughter ripping itself free from her being. But the positive state of being was quickly changed as she turned around, her fist colliding into the mirror. Much to her displeasure no cracks appeared, probably because the Capitol's mirror wasn't made of the usual glass.

Cyn's green eyed gaze fell onto the glass cup that stood on the edge of the basin, so, still hungry for smashing something she snatched it up, smashing the edge of it on the wall. Glass shards exploded from the impact, some still managing to stick together in order to form a rather jagged cup while others clattered to the floor- useless.

And with those actions it wasn't all the surprising when crimsons drops fell into the basin. Staining the white stone with scarlet trails as they slid down.

As more drops contaminated the object, unhinging laughter played out like a melody gone wrong.

"You alright there Shelbs?"

Shelby turned around to see the brown and blue eyes of her brother. He ran a hand through his blonde hair, joining her at the glass window she was standing in front of. The Capitol was acting the same as always, expensive cars driving by, people dressed up in rather strange and expensive get up, none of them had to worry about killing their friends or family, none of them had to fear death. Instead every single one of them was looking forward to it, excited to see what events will be unfolded on their TV screens.

"It's sick." Said Shelby, looking back at the window, "how can they not care? How can they be looking forward to this?"

"Probably because they don't have anything to loose." Spoke Tyler, following her gaze to a group of people that looked to be having a good time.

"Well I hate it." She grumbled, turning her back to it, "let's just get this over and done with." She said quietly marching off with Tyler close behind.

Dread was the emotion that had latched itself on the majority of the tributes. It plagued their thoughts, causing them to grow more fearful, more scared of what was to come. The whole thing still felt rather surreal, all of them trying so hard to comprehend with the fact that they have to do this. They have to fight to the death, they have to kill or they'll be killed...

Those thoughts aren't really the thing you want to wake up to and aren't really the thing you want to put up with for quite obvious reasons. They tend to put a rather bleak look on the day that still has yet to happen. But it would appear that some of them refuse to let that slide, them putting on a rather sunny and happy facade to distract them from what's to come.

Chris was one of those people for he struck a pose in the gear they were forced to wear. An outfit consisting of a jacket, a shirt and some pants.

"I think I pull this off quite well." He said, striking yet another pose. Kayla just looked at him with a blank expression.

"Chris. If you think that's going to do anything then you're wrong." She replied, turning away from him as she walked down the hallway.

"Sorry, I just wanted to try distract you- us from... You know..."

Kayla sighed, "yeah... I know. Look we don't have much time before we have to go our separate ways, so you know the plan right?"

"Um... How would you feel if i say no?" He asked, a sheepish grin crawling onto his face.

"I would say that I wouldn't be expecting any less of you. Now as I have said countless times you run away, I'll get the packs and hopefully a weapon or two and then I'll join you."

"Heh. No wonder I forgot about." Said Chris, his expression turning rather dark at what she said, "Kay, you can't fly right into there, you'll get killed!"

"Chris, I'll be fine. I have my wings, if I'm quick enough I'll be out of there in a jiffy so don't worry about it."

"I'm worrying about." He said, crossing his arms.

"What? You have a better plan?"

Silence greeted the question causing Kayla to roll her eyes, "I thought so. Look Chris, everything will be fine. I promise. You just need to trust me on this okay? When have I ever given you a reason to not trust me?"

"Right now. Kayla, please don't go in there. I don't want you to get killed. It'll be safer if we both run, don't you think?"

"Supplies is what we need Chris. If we don't get them when the clock reaches zero then there's a chance we'll be in serious trouble.

The dingo mutant opened his mouth to protest yet again but it was immediately shut by Kayla's hand covering it. Her blue eyes appearing to be stern in order to hide the fear that was bubbling in her stomach from both the meaning of this day and her plan.

"Nothing you say can change my mind." She said quietly, removing her hand away from his mouth. She then wrapped her arms around his lean body, resting her head on him as she let out a soft sigh. He slowly hugged back, his ears and tail dropping.

"Don't get killed." She whispered.

"Same for you Kay."

They were in each others arms for a handful of minutes before they let go, both of them going off in their separate ways to reach their tubes.

This feeling was something that Kayla was sure she would never forget. The knots twisting tightly in her stomach, the need to throw up looming overhead like the grim reaper. She tried her best to keep her breaths even, to keep her thoughts away from turning anxious and dangerous. She knows that there was no way to escape the event, she knows that is she doesn't get those supplies at the very start her and Chris will be screwed over. And she knows that out of the two of them she has to be the one to die, it was the most logical thing there.

She stepped onto the metal plat form, taking in deep breaths as glass surrounded her. Her heart thumped loudly against her chest as she felt her stress levels slowly rising- funnily enough matching the movement of the plate as she ascended up.

The artificial sunlight blinded her, making her bring a hand to her eyes to block it. A breeze blew past, playing with the strands of hair. A monotone voice reached her ears counting down the seconds they had left until the games started just as the scenery came into focus. Trees circled the twenty four of them, lush grass covering the whole area, patches of it being flattened by the weight of weapons, bags and the structure of the cornucopia- acting as some sort of beacon.

The tension in the arena was so dense that you couldn't even break it with the slice of a knife. But it wasn't just in the arena where tensions are high, but at home as well. Adults, parents, friends and families had gathered themselves around any available screen, their eyes glued to the footage they were given with, mimicking moths and their attraction to light. Their hearts beating as one as their minds were corrupted with negativity for what might happen.
