As soon as the first rays of sunlight were spotted Kayla woke both Chris and Raph. Together the three of them filled their packs and got the supplies that they will need and with that they set off to the city's edge.
As time went by the bleak grey sky slowly transformed into a cornflower blue, no clouds in sight as the heat beat down onto them thus making beads of sweat to form on their foreheads. Well for the boys that is, Kayla was fine. Thanks to her mutation she was able to withstand powerful blasts of heat and even fire, although if she was place in that situation her legs will have to suffer thanks to the lack of scales that covered them
As soon as they reached the city's edge, they stopped. Ahead of them was a field of dirt and soil where toughs of grass dotted around, showing that some vegetation can indeed grow.
"So we just run straight through?" Queried Raph, looking in that direction to see the cluster of trees and vines from the distance. He stayed close to the building he was at, the shadow concealing him.
"Yup." Said Kayla, "you and Chris will race over there. I'll be flying above making sure we don't have any surprise attackers then I'll join you guys. Hopefully we'll find some food soon, water too." She said this with confidence however something was nagging at her causing her frown to deepen. Something didn't feel right.
"And are you sure you can't just fly us over?" Demanded Raph, not liking the idea of running out on the open.
Kayla shook her head, shooting down the idea, "I won't be able to carry you guys in one flight, I won't be strong enough and also someone might knock us out of the sky. Then we'll both be dead."
Raph huff, disliking the idea but they do have to move, it won't be good sticking to one place and also they'll need to get more resources before they run out.
"So... Should we just go ahead?" Asked Chris, fidgeting slightly to indicate how nervous he was.
Kayla didn't respond, her being distracted with trying sort out that nagging feeling. She stared at the large patch of dirt that laid out before them, trying to figure out exactly what it was about it that troubled her. She looked over it, seeing how the vegetation from the other sections all of the sudden stopped for the dirt to appear. She noted down how only small patches of grass appeared in what seemed to be rows, it all seemed too deliberate to her.
"I'll go first." Sighed Raph, cracking his fingers. He wander closer to the plane of dirt, getting into a position ready to sprint. It was just then that Kayla finally realized what is was and when she did her face paled, eyes widening.
"Wait Raph, it's a-" But she never got to finished her warning. Raph had already sprinted and once his foot had touched the dirt, an explosion had gone off. Chris and Kayla were rocketed backwards thanks to the force of it, chunks of what used to be Raphael flew everywhere. Dotting the whole dirt plane, being as some sort of warning to not go through it. Glass from the windows that surrounded them had shattered, bits and pieces of it raining down, more explosions were heard and flames of fire began to appear.
Chris groaned and stood himself up, noticing cracks appearing in the stone building sand a slight tremor that rolled underneath his feet. He stumbled- trying to keep his balance, his amber eyes flickering from place to place to see where his friend was. Suddenly a familiar pair of blue wings came up, he followed them to see Kayla sitting herself up- a large glass shard piercing her shoulder therefore staining her shirt red. She yanked it out her eyes managing to find Chris who was already running over to her.
He grabbed her wrist and dragged her with him just as a building toppled over, crashing down into another. More explosions rang out through the terrain, toppling of buildings, cracking of pavement and singing of glass being shattered and raining down onto the ground below.
Onward they kept on running, Kayla trying her very best to keep up with her best friend- not wanting to force him to slow down. Dust, debris, stone crept up on them, trying to suck them into their ruins- wanting to make them a decoration to it. Cracks continued to crawl over to them , splitting open the concrete ground.
Figuring that eventually they'll plummet down Kayla decided to go against what she had said earlier- letting go of Chris's hand as she spread out her wings, her feet leaving the ground as she flew. Her arms looping underneath Chris's pits as she flew higher- struggling to carry him, her shoulder crying out in pain.
"Kayla what are you doing?!" He yelled out, eyes widening as he saw the ground leaving them, buildings and blasts continued to be made.
"Making sure we don't fall through the ground." She grunted, gritting her teeth in effort as she managed to dodge a flying piece of concrete.
The pair of them weren't the only ones that were trying to escape the falling city. Shelby, Mikey and Tyler were running as fast as they could- the three of them having been placed in the center of the city where many more explosions were happening. The blasts of bright light surrounding them, making Shelby feel incredibly uncomfortable.
She felt as if she was burning alive- the heat too stifling for her, too horrid for her. Her sight was beginning to fade, the noises around her appearing to be muffled as her throat felt raw and dry, large droplets of sweat rolling off her person. She couldn't stand this heat, she was definitely going to die thanks to her cold core, she could even feel the heat seeping into her- coating her core and making it melt. She was going to die here, she knows it and there's nothing she can do about it.
Mikey looked over his shoulder noticing how Shelby was slowing down. He could see that the events were effecting her in a terrible way.
A loud creak made his eyes flicker to the building that was currently standing beside Shelby, the structure cracked in more places then one as was already beginning to fall. If he doesn't do anything now then Shelby would be killed for certain, so refusing to let that happen the turtle let out a shout, pulling Shelby well out of the way from the toppling building.
A cannon went off as chunks of stone landed on the young Michelangelo, his last words that still rang in Tyler's ears being, 'booyakasha.'
But he has to keep running, the blonde can't just gawk at what happened. So he picked up his sister, carrying her bridal style as he continued to run feeling all alone as he noted her fading in and out. He has to get them out of the area as soon as he can, he wasn't going to let them die. Especially since Mikey risked his life for Shelby.
Further behind the siblings was the alliance of geniuses. Sarina, Katrina and Donnie had instantly ran out of the building when they noticed things strange happening- they left behind all their supplies feeling slightly thankful for not being burdened by them.
On they went, blasts of heat and clouds of dust following them wherever they went. Another tumor rolled out from underneath sending Sarina to the ground instantly. Donnie and Katrina was about to turn around to go back and help her but they were cut off guard when an explosion happened a few feet behind the cyborg.
It was obvious enough she didn't make it through having received the full blast, slightly luckier Donnie and Katrina had turned around and ducked- the flames sliding over their bodies, licking their skin, making them more vulnerable.
The district three girl couldn't but let out a shrilling scream, the demon that was the fire was taunting her, playing with her hair and setting it alight. Ever single fiber of her being was screaming out in pure agony, convulsions pulsed through her, the fire's constant roar deafening her as it continued to rip layers upon layers of skin off. Her nervous system was going haywire, her brain unable to take in all of this pain she was feeling at once.
She couldn't stand it, she couldn't stand it, she couldn't stand it, SHE COULDN'T-
And just like that her thought process was cut short, the last of her breath being pulled out by the flames that continued to burn brightly. Using Katrina's and Donnie's corpses as it plagued the rest of the city.
Only four people got out of that mess. Tyler, Shelby, Kayla and Chris.
Out of the four Tyler and Shelby got the slightly better end of the deal. Tyler had manage to get them both out as safely as he could, slight burns appearing on his body from when he tried to stop the flames from getting his sister. As soon as he got out of there and into the forest he searched immediately for a lake, water. Anything.
He looked around, his eyes finding a place and just like that he raced off. Knowing that Shelby needed someplace cool to get her energy back.
Meanwhile Kayla and Chris had crash landed into the part of the forest that was quite close to the cornucopia. One of Kayla's wings were bent, blood patches appearing on her shirt and pants to show where she had been injured. Chris just looked at one of his legs, one of the pant legs now reach his knee thanks to the meeting of fire. He had his hands placed over a nasty burn mark that twirled around his leg, his teeth clenched and his eyes closed as he tries to subdue the pain.
He just prayed that they would be safe to heal, that they will be able to heal.
But a pair of eyes from afar was determined to not let that happen.
