Chapter 5: The Child in the Snow

My face hit the ground mercilessly as Techno flipped me, I panted as my body ached. "We're not done here, woman.", he grunted. He was a merciless brute when it came to teaching the art of the sword or maybe I was just the brute at learning. My wings were bounded with a wrap to prevent me from escaping and also to make my training more difficult. My anger started to bubble in my chest from being humiliated so many times but I knew that feelings like those wouldn't help me land a hit on the God before me. Philza was observing from the tower that looked out upon the Kingdom of Veri, he looked worried yet once he noticed me staring, he offered me a reassuring smile. A sigh escaped my lips before I got on my feet, Technoblade signaled me to attack him. This time, he didn't manage to trip me which was a first. My hopes went up as my wooden sword almost managed to hit his mask, the keyword, almost. With one quick movement, my body was in the air and once again on the sweet ground that I was becoming to love.

"That's enough... Go get cleaned up...", sighed Technoblade before leaving me there. My tongue clicked as I rolled onto my back. A familiar figure loomed over me before chuckling and offering me his signature smile. "Maybe it's best to go train with Wilbur, my dear.", whispered Philza before lifting me. A groan of annoyance became a scream of desperation as I began to throw the sword into a wall, to my demise, it ricochetted into a window. Philza and I both paled as we noticed whose window that belonged to. "Should we run?", I asked. Philza quickly unbounded my wings, we flew up to the window and looked upon the damage my little tantrum had caused. "You fixed the inside... I'll fix the window and try to slow him down... After you're done... Run.", said Philza. I nodded and began to fix the inside, grabbing the sword and placing it on my hip.

The room was an elegant office room, books decorated both walls while weapons hanged in different positions around the room. A string of curses was all I could muster as I picked up the papers and books from the ground, something cracked under my boot. It was a locket, the green gem that served as a cover was now broken. Carefully picking it up, I noticed a picture of a beautiful woman in it, it was most possibly Technoblades lover or someone dear to him. Deep in my mind, I knew that I couldn't leave it as it currently was, so I placed it in my pocket. After making sure everything was fine, I bolted for the door. As I was turning a corner, a hand reached to grab me. My reflexes were on point as I managed to dodge the hand. My eyes met with bright red ones that were behind the skull mask. Holding back my screams, I managed to enter the safety of my room or so I thought. "Open the door, (Y/n).", growled Technoblade.

The constant banging ceased as I heard Philzas voice, I mentally thanked him before heading into the bath. My thoughts ceased as I soaked in the large tub, flowers floated around while the oils used soaked into my bruised and tired skin. The white snow outside the window kept pouring, part of me missed the green lush of my home. The Kingdom of Veri was always covered in snow and ice making it hard to inhabit, that's what everyone thought before the kingdom was built years ago. I had learned from the knights that the first king had used magic to create the kingdom and it continued that way generation after generation. Yet, Technoblade had appeared one day and liberated the Kingdom from the tyrant that ruled it after the death of the Queen. The only thing I managed to find out about the Queen is that she had a child, but no records had proven this correct.

I sighed before getting out, shaking my heavy wings. Wrapping a towel around me, I headed for the window to look out at the dark sky. My breath stopped as I saw a small figure walking by the forest a few feet away from the castle walls. Dark figures surrounded the person, glowing purple eyes could be seen from where I stood. Changing and drying my wings, I headed to my balcony, the cold wind no longer affected me like the first week of my stay. I flew over before landing a few feet from the figure, it was a child, he looked at me before whispering something. The creatures let out a shrill that made me shiver, they disappeared before the child collapsed onto the snow. "Hey!", I shouted, running over and picking him up. The child was dirty and looked malnourished; being quick, I flew back to my room. "Maids!", I shouted.

A group of maids entered and gasped as they saw me covered in snow and ice. "My lady!! Oh no, your wings!!", cried one of them. I dismissed my wings and ordered them to prepare a bath and find clothes for the child in my arms. Being careful, I laid him on the bed and checked for injuries. My mouth went sour as I saw a slave brand on his shoulder, it was infected and eating away at his muscle. "My lady, the bath is ready!", reported one of the maids. I nodded and ordered them to look in my bag for some herbs to throw in the water. My hands hovered over the brand before I started to heal the boy's wounds. His screams echoed throughout the castle as the brand was being healed and removed.

My attention was interrupted when one of the maids stopped me, following her gaze I saw what had caused her to grip my shoulder. On the balcony, was a monstrous creature, long black arms smashed the table outside then focused on me. The maids screamed as it attacked the glass doors, yet I had reinforced them in case of any attack so the creature's arms bounced back. I frowned as I headed for the balcony, reassuring the maids that everything was okay.

"Stand back and protect that child.", I ordered, opening the door. The maids panicked yet surrounded the child as I closed the door. It wasn't surprising to see these creatures, Kristen had told me about them, they were called Endermen and came from a dimension called the End.

I froze as I saw many of them around the castle walls, this would be bad if Technoblade saw them, I focused on the creature before me. Before the eyes of the creature landed on mine, I had closed them. They didn't enjoy eye contact yet this creature still let out a shrill that made my feathers stand. "What do you want?", I asked, uncertain that it would answer me at all.

A sigh escaped me, their language was very old so it came to no surprise that I wouldn't understand them. "I'm sorry... I cant understand you... It seems that you are very attached to this child... I swear that he is in good hands... Please, do not harm anyone in this kingdom.", I said, before bowing.

There was a sound that was rather peculiar sound as it finished speaking, I opened my eyes to see that it was gone. I looked out to see that the creatures had all left and the knights below looked confused. The doors to my room smashed in and Technoblade ordered the maids to leave. I rushed inside and covered the child as he raised his sword. "GET OUT OF THE WAY!", he roared. He was angry and most likely was willing to kill the child since they were causing a threat. "No, this child didn't cause anything...", I argued, glaring at him. Philza entered and got between us, arguing that no one was harmed by the creatures.

Technoblade put his sword away, asking Philza to leave. I sat on my bed, hiding the child from both men. Even though I loved and trusted Philza, I had promised that the child would be taken care of by me. "I'll keep him with me...", I frowned, denying Philzas offer to take the child. He nodded and left the room leaving me alone with Technoblade. He seemed to have calm down because his sword was now on his hip.  "Why is it that you always cause trouble?", he asked. Part of me wanted to give him a sarcastic remark but I knew better than that. "He was alone... in the snow... I couldn't leave him to die out there... I honestly didn't think those creatures would appear.", I answered sincerely.

I felt the Blood God sit next to me, my body tensed as he reached over to remove the cloth that covered the child. "Relax... I want to see him...", sighed Techno. Once he removed the cloth, I had a good look at the child. He had black and brown hair and his face was pale; he was fast asleep after the removal of the slave brand. "He's a God, he has the mark...", whispered Technoblade. I looked behind his left ear and indeed the child had a mark. I had learned from Philza that all Gods and Demi-Gods had markings on their bodies. If the mark was glowing, that meant that the God had awakened. The marking for the child was an eye, yet it was not glowing. "He hasn't awoken his powers...", I whispered. A shiver from the child reminded me that he still needed a bath and warm clothes. "I need clothes for him...", I sighed. Techno got up and left the room before coming back with clothes that most likely fit the child.

He excused himself and closed the door as I headed into the bathroom. The water was warm so I started to wake the child. "Wake up, little one...", I whispered. The child finally woke up to reveal his eyes, an emerald-colored one and the other being red as rubies. He calmly looked at me yet he didn't seem scared of me even though he didn't know me.

He saw the tub filled with water and cried, gripping onto my shirt. "NO! PLEASE NO!", he screamed. His panic was so heartbreaking that I left the bathroom, calming him before he could hurt himself. "It's okay... No water...", I whispered. The child shivered and hid in my chest, a sudden realization dawned upon me. "How about some magic, l promise it won't hurt you.", I smiled. The child looked at me before deciding if that was a good idea. "It won't hurt?", he asked. He seemed to be willing to try out my idea. "Pinky promise!", I grinned, offering my pinky to him. He stared at it for a while before asking what that meant. "Uh, it means that this is serious! If not, you can have my pinky!", I laughed. The child seemed concerned before voicing that he didn't wish to have my pinky. This outburst made me laugh and hide him, promising that at all cost he wouldn't suffer any more under my care.

"So, it's a pinky promise?"
