 "Come on Natsu! We're gonna be late to school!"

"Yeah yeah I'm coming! Don't rush me, Luce! Bye Happy, see you when I get back!" Natsu Dragoneel called to his blue feline friend who was yawning as he slammed the door, turned, and ran straight into his best friend, Lucy Heartfilia.

"Eek! Natsu!" she jumped back in surprise, before calming down and smiling. "Really?" she sighed, suddenly scowling, before grabbing the pinkette's hand and dragging him to the sidewalk.

"Oi! Lucyyyy~!" Natsu complained, stumbling.

"I hope you have a good explanation for being late mister! We've only got ten minutes to get to school and it's a twenty minute walk!" Lucy stated, marching along and not looking back.

"H-hey! Well, you see- WOAH!" Natsu tripped on a raise in the sidewalk and promptly fell on his face. "Uhhh..."

"Serves you right, numbskull."

"Hey! I'm not getting you to school on time then!" Natsu proclaimed, setting his fists on fire and taking off. Lucy jumped back with surprise, before having an angry mark pop up beside her head.

"HEY YOU GET BACK HERE YOU IDIOT OR I'LL GO GET ERZA ON YOU!" Natsu was too far ahead by that time to hear her threat. HA! She'll never catch me now! Natsu did feel a little guilty about leaving his friend. Skidding his heels and turning back around, he sped back the way he came.

"Wait you actually heard that?" Lucy questioned once he was in hearing range.

"Nope!" Natsu contradicted, swept Lucy up bridal style, and was back towards their school in a matter of seconds. Lucy squeaked in surprise, blushing, and looked up at Natsu, who was grinning like an idiot.

"Didn't you say you weren't going to get us to school on time?"

"Well yeah, but where's the fun if you're in detention?" Natsu reasoned, feeling strangely elated.

I seriously hope this doesn't get any worse. Natsu thought to himself, internally punching himself to get himself to snap out of the weird feelings he had been, well, feeling, recently. They weren't unpleasant at all, but were sure making things seem awkward between Lucy and him, at least in his opinion. He wondered if he was sick or something, but this had been going on for weeks, and he never felt sick persay.

The duo got to the front of the school and Natsu finally let Lucy down.

"You IDIOT! Now I'll never hear the end of this! Ugh!" Lucy complained, dusting her dress off.

"I got us here on time though. No thank you for Mr. Dragneel?"

Lucy Lucy Kicked him.

"O-Okay!" Natsu winced from his friend's signature move. Someone snickered off to the side.

"Serves you right, Flame Head." Grey Fullbuster, Natsu's rival and one of his best friends (although he would NEVER say that out loud).

"What did you call me, Ice Freak?" "What? I never said anything, Coal-For-Brains."

"ICE PRINCESS!"

"FLAME FREAK!"

"POPSICLE!"

"SHUT IT YOU TWO!" their heads were bashed together by Erza Scarlet, the vice president and police of the student council. The two boys immediately stopped their bickering, the fiery and icy auras surrounding them diminishing in an instant.

"OWWW WE'RE SORRY ERZA!" they pleaded at the same time.

The redhead girl smirked. "You two say that every time, you know that?"

Natsu and Grey chuckled and glanced at each other, before realizing it and giving each other a death glare and turning each other's back on them. Erza shook her head and walked away to meet with student council president, Mirajane Strauss, and her two younger siblings, Elfman and Lisanna.

Natsu searched the growing crowd for Lucy again, and saw her chatting with her two friends Levy McGarden and Juvia Lockser. Juvia had hearts in her eyes and was saying something, while Levy appeared to be rolling her eyes and Lucy giggling like mad. I wonder if I can scare them without getting hurt. Natsu wondered, but before he could attempt (what he should know would be an epic failure) the bell rang, the pinkette getting swarmed and carried into the hell that was school.

"Good morning Fairy Tail High School! Today is May twelfth, and today we have some special announcements for all you brats!" The principal, Master Makarov as the students called him, shouted over the intercom. He said brats, but everyone knew he thought of all the students as family.

"First off, as many of the members of the student council are leaving this year, we will be having elections for a new student council! Freshmans through junior can enter, as seniors will be sadly leaving us after this year. But speaking of which, Friday there will be the senior prom! Be sure to be there, all you seniors!"

All of Natsu's class perked up at the thought of a senior-only dance. Most of the students never went because all the younger students made things hectic and the principal shouting over the intercom about it for ten whole minutes the next day. Natsu started thinking about going, and his mind went straight to who he could go with.

Maybe I could ask Lucy- WAIT WHAT?! She'll kick me if I even bring UP asking her places like that! Oh, god...

Natsu turned to the other "dragon slayer" in his class at the moment, Gajeel Redfox. "Hey Gajeel,"

"Salamander."

"You gonna go with anyone to the dance?"

For some reason some of the other kids in the school had sorted all the "popular" kids into groups, and given them cool nicknames like "dragon slayers" or "team Natsu" (although how he ended up being the name of a group was completely unknown to him) and "Salamander" or "Tatiana" for Erza. Honestly they didn't care, but hey it was still cool.

Gajeel glared at Natsu. "You seriously asking me that? Heck, I probably won't even be going."

"Aw, come on Gajeel! You need to have some fun sometime this year! It's our last year in high school!" Levy complained, overhearing their conversation from a couple desks away.

"I don't remember you being part of this conversation, Shrimp." Gajeel said grumpily. Levy glared at him, meeting his eyes, and strangely he was the first one to break her gaze. She smirked as Gajeel "tch"ed and ignored her and Natsu alike.

Gee. Why you gotta be so rude, Gaj? And to Levy too.

Glancing over at Grey, he was grimacing and trying to ignore Juvia's heart stare from the classroom next door. "Good luck, Ice Face!" Natsu called to him, Grey giving him a red glare in return.

Gotcha!

"Okay right class! Everyone in their seats this INSTANT! Hey, who tracked in all this dirt? Wait, what is this? ASH?! And why is it all over my desk?!"

Oops. Maybe I'LL be the one getting detention...

Natsu got out of school at three, having gotten a quick thirty-minute detention from one teacher or another. Honestly he didn't care that he got detention pretty much every day, since either way he had fun doing whatever got him it and it was a good work time to do his homework.

Not that I care about homework anyway!

He thought quite chipper and busted the door open to his house. "Hey Happy I'm home!" he called, and his cat friend was there almost immediately.

Natsu's dad had disappeared years ago, and he had never known his mom. But he didn't care, because he still had Happy! And a weekend job for money. And school...

"How'd your day go Natsu?" Happy asked.

Some people would be surprised that Natsu had a blue talking cat, but then again this was Natsu they were talking about. He had control over fire like Grey had control over ice and the Strauss siblings could turn into monsters. Magic was a somewhat uncommon ability, but definitely not unheard of.

"Good, I guess. Gramps made an announcement of a dance on Friday. I was thinking of asking Lucy, but..." Natsu trailed off, the feeling coming back in his chest.

"Buut...?" Happy repeated, gesturing for Natsu to continue.

"Oh I don't know! Things have been really strange with me about her, I think I might be like eternally sick or something." Natsu pouted, becoming flustered. He sunk into deep thought while Happy tried to withhold his reaction without the pinkette noticing.

Lucy's probably already going with Loke or someone like that. Goddammit Loke, why can't you stick with Aries? You already practically live with her.

Natsu didn't realize his hand set on fire.

Happy suddenly started bursting out in laughter, rolling around on the floor.

"NATSU LOOOOOOOOOVEES LUCY!! I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT I KNEW IT I KNEW IT!" The cat screamed happily in between breathes of laughter.

Natsu panicked and waved his flaming hand around, accidentally sending some in Happy's direction, before extinguishing it and rounding on the cat.

"WHAT?! Happy what are you talking about? I'm not- not in love with Luce!" yet saying that felt like fireworks were set off in his heart.

Natsu sat back down in his chair, trying to sort out all these crazy thoughts and feelings that were floating around in his head. Happy was still giggling, despite being nearly burnt by Natsu's fireball.

Do I actually... Like Lucy? More than a friend? His mind said no, yet his heart was slowly saying things otherwise. "Happyyy~ you jerk. You're making me think two different things." Natsu groaned and shoved his face in his hands.

Happy was silent for a moment, before suggesting probably the worst idea he had ever said.

"Maybe you should talk to Mira about it?"

"NOOOOOO!" Natsu screeched, clearly imagining Mirajane's reaction to him asking about something like this.

His mind imagined her saying things like "ships" and "Nalu" and "love" and little shipping She-Devils swarming all over the place. "Hell no Happy."

Happy rolled his eyes and plopped down on the ground. "Well I tried."

The next day Natsu walked into the student council room before school.

"Hey Mira can I ask you something?"
