Some blush is still present on Tooru's face from the absolutely adorable stunt he did earlier, he tries to ignore the lingering warmth on his face as he crouches down in fascination to look at a bright cherry colored cup shaped flower blooming atop it's green stalk, rising amongst it's own leaves.
"Ohh, this one's pretty, what's it called?" Asks Tooru as he stares down at it, his small hands in his lap. You sit on your knees next to him so you can look at the flower before the two of you, careful to make sure you don't squish the Wisterias in your hand.
"Oh, that one's a Red Tulip!" You say as you look back up at him. You gasp as you focus on his eyes and whirl your head back to face there flower, only to look at Tooru's eyes once more.
"Tooru-kun, your eyes!" You say, your own eyes wide.
"My eyes?" Questions Tooru, his brows furrowing.
"They match with the color of the Tulip!" You further explain. Tooru gasps.
"That's so cool!" He yells.
"I like yours better though, they look really pretty!" You say earnestly. Tooru averts his eyes with some embarrassment while the blush that had finally left returns; albeit not as strong as before. You let out a small giggle at the way Tooru has responded.
"A-anyways." stutters Tooru as he shuffles over to the left so he can look a group of flowers nearby, you follow him. "What're these flowers called?" These flowers in particular have light green and narrow stems with heart-shaped leaves protruding along them, as well as a couple vine-like tendrils. The' crowning jewel of these plants is, of course, the heavenly blue trumpet shaped flowers located atop the stems. You smile down at the beautifully colored flowers.
"These are Heavenly Blue Morning Glories. These were one of my mom's favorite flowers, they're super pretty, right?" You ask as you turn your head back up to face Tooru. He nods his head in affirmation as he cautiously reaches his small hand out to try to pick one of the flowers, his face once again scrunched up in focus.
Tooru picks the flower with ease and lets out a small sigh of relief. While still looking down at the flower he speaks.
"What're we gonna do with these flowers that we pick anyways?" You grin at the question.
"It's a surprise!"
And that is how after picking and looking at more flowers you and Tooru ended up sitting underneath a tree next to a little pond while he covers his eyes and you hum a tune behind him. What Tooru isn't aware you're doing is that you're weaving together flowers from the pile of brightly colored flowers you and Tooru picked together, the Wisterias he gave you securely resting on your lap.
The pile is a mix of blue and white Hydrangeas, purple Irises, Red Tulips, white Lily-lookalike Amaryllises stained with dark pink veins, and of course, the Heavenly Blue Morning Glory. You're weaving them into two flower crowns, one for you, which is already complete, and one for Tooru.
You gently hum as you continue weaving the second flower crown, a smile on your face. Tooru is getting a little impatient though. An over-the-top sigh escapes his lips.
"Are you almost done doing whatever you're doing, (y/n)-chan?" Asks Tooru as he rolls around on the ground, his small hands still covering his eyes. You laugh at his antics as you finish the last flower crown.
"You're gonna get you fancy clothes dirty." You giggle. "I'm done now, so sit up and keep your eyes covered; don't move an inch!" You instruct with a grin of your face. Tooru does as you've asked while you place one of the flower crowns on your own head. Now it's his turn, you shuffle closer to him and steady your hands above his head, making sure it's at a good angle where it'll be resting against his small black horns, so that they're on the inside of the colorful flower crown.
"Hey Tooru-kun, could you try to hold back your magic like you do when you're about to touch a flower?" You ask. Tooru's brows furrow but he doesn't question it.
"Sure, (y/n)-chan."
"Thanks!" You cheerily say as you gently place the flower crown on his head. "There!" You say. "All done, you can open your eyes now!" Tooru removes his hands from over his eyes and profusely blushes when his eyes focus on you, his face is about as red as when he gave you the Wisteria flowers.
"Y-you look..." Tooru doesn't really know what to say, the word "pretty" wouldn't be good enough; he needs a better word. Tooru remembers that whenever his mother describes her old village where she used to live before she met his father she always calls the flower field and creek that ran behind her home gorgeous, she always has this look in her eyes whenever she talks about it like she misses it— he hopes he's using the word right.
"Y-you look better than pretty! You look gorgeous!" Your face explodes into a full on tomato red blush.
"S-so do you!" You stutter out. Tooru's eye widen, like he's flattered but also confused, you laugh and grab his hand and drag his over to the pond next to the tree you two had been sheltering yourselves underneath. Tooru gasp as he looks at his reflection in the water; he too has a flower crown, and it's almost identical to yours.
"You're gonna be king one day, and the best king in the world's gotta have the best crown in the world, right, Tooru-kun?" You grin at him, still heavily blushing. Tooru lifts his head back to face yours.
"B-but what about you? You have a crown too. Does that make you my queen...?" Asks Tooru, his face as red from blush as his own eyes. You squeak at the realization of what being his queen would signify, your own cheeks burning warmer.
"W-well does the queen help the king rule?" You ask.
"Y-yeah, with a few things, she also gives the king advice."
"Well then yes. I-I would be the queen, I would help you rule the land— uh, o-only if you want me to be queen though." You sputter, Tooru vigorously nods his head.
"I'll be the king and you'll be the queen. W-we'll make it the best kingdom ever!" Exclaims Tooru while you laugh simply out of happiness. You stand up and stretch out your hand in front of him to grab, the other hand holding the Wisteria flowers.
"C'mon, we still have time to pick a lot more flowers, and there's one that I really wanna find!" Tooru grabs your equally small hand and you pull him up. "I remember when my mom had come back from some quest with her guild friends she brought back these sweet smelling flowers she had found on the way, they're called May bells. When she showed them to me I knew those were my new favorite flowers. I've always wanted to try to find them here ever since my mom told me they grew in this forest; so far I've had no luck, but now with you here, Tooru, we'll definitely find them!"
Tooru clasps his two hand over your empty one.
"I promise that I'll help you find them! Let's not waist anymore time and look for them right away!" Shouts Tooru as he starts running, dragging you in some random direction. You laugh.
"Wait Tooru! You don't even know what they look like yet!" Tooru's running stutters to a halt.
"O-oh yeah..." He says sheepishly.
May bells. May bells often grow in large colonies with thin herbaceous stems and two large leaves growing near the base and a raceme of 5-15 small, white, bell-shaped flowers, occasionally the flowers will be colored pink. May bells also have a wonderfully sweet scent, don't eat them though, they're poisonous. It wasn't the appearance of the flowers that made them your favorite, nor the sweet scent. It was what your mother had told you when she first showed them to you.
'In the language of flowers, May bells mean the return of happiness.'
Those had been your mother's exact words as she gently smiled down at you, that's why May bells are your favorite flower.
After you told Tooru what May bells look like you told him what they mean in the language of flowers, which made him all the more determined to help you find them, much to your amusement.
Before you and Tooru can even realize it it's already getting dark outside, and the two of have had no luck in finding May bells, he deflates when you tell him you have to leave and go back to the church.
"Don't be sad!" You say. "We still have the rest of our lives to look for the May bells!" That seems to do the trick and cheer up Tooru. You lift Tooru's flower crown off his head and tell him you'll get sister Eliza to put a suspension spell on it so that way the flowers won't wither and die over time. You promise to meet with him again tomorrow under the same tree as today, and with that, you hug Tooru and thank him for the Wisterias and turn and run, heading for the church.
Man time flies.
Soon spring is over and you two get to enjoy summer together, promising that once next spring comes around you'll continue the search for May bells. Summer leaves and you two enjoy Autumn. In Autumn you show Tooru a really cool spell that you've been working on; it's a rejuvenation spell. You try it on a dead leaf and a splotch of vibrant green returns to the leaf before fading away back into the dead muddled brown it was before. You're far from mastering the spell, but that doesn't stop Tooru from being incredibly impressed. Winter rolls around and you two have plenty of snow ball fights, but on one particular day the nuns refuse to let you go you outside, and with good reason; there's a blizzard outside.
But as you sit alone in your room, a fuzzy blanket that sister Josefina knitted for you wrapped around your body while you stare out the window, you can't help but feel like you've left Tooru hanging. That is, until his face pops into view out of nowhere a few feet away on the other side of the window. There's literally a blizzard going on outside yet Tooru's just standing there, only wearing a light jacket.
"Could you open the window?" He calls, his voice muffled because of the glass in between them, and the strong wind outside.
There's one problem with Tooru coming in though, it's not as simple as opening the window for him, he's a demon, and this is a church. There's a magic barrier preventing anything "unholy" from getting in. The good news is that it can be cracked from the inside, so that's what you do. You recite a holy prayer that sister Josefina taught you and only put a small amount of magic into it, allowing the barrier to crack. For a moment the barrier around the church is visible, the crack that's Tooru's way in also becomes visible for a moment before the barrier goes back to being translucent. Tooru takes the hint and goes through the crack in the barrier, you then open the window so he can climb inside. Once he clumsily gets inside your room he grins, those tiny fangs visible.
"Hey (y/n)!" Yells Tooru.
"Shhh!" Is all you say, which confuses Tooru, before running over to the door and opening it just enough to peak your head through, your blanket falling off your shoulders in the process. Your eyes scan the hallway, thankfully no one is around. You sigh in relief as you close the door, it is broad daylight after all, someone could've heard Tooru.
"Someone could've heard you." You explain in a hushed voice.
"Ohhh." Says Tooru in a normal voice. "Don't worry about that, I made sure no one was nearby!" Cheerfully say Tooru. You furrow your eyebrows in confusion.
"How did you do that?" You ask.
"I used my magic! If I focus then I can tell when someone's nearby!" Proudly states Tooru.
"Gwahhh that's super cool!" You say.
And so from then on, the time you two spent together wouldn't end when you had to go to dinner, because when dinner was over Tooru would be outside your window, waiting for you to give him permission to come in.
A few birthdays later and you were no longer five, and he was no longer six. No, now you're seven, and now he's eight. Both of you are now a little older.
