Chapter 38
I had lost count of how many times I had cycled through this nightmare. Each loop, I woke up in the graveyard house, searching for Wade and Nicole, only to find they didn’t remember me. The pain of their absence gnawed at me, but a new resolve began to take shape. Maybe chasing after those elusive gems wasn’t the answer. What if we had been wrong about that creature we encountered before? The one we thought was a gem, but might actually be something more significant?
“Think, Mavobella,” I muttered to myself as I paced the empty room, the dust swirling in the light filtering through the broken windows. “Wade mentioned mythical creatures once. What if…?”
Determined, I turned to the map, squinting at the faded ink. The creature we had encountered in the undersea cavern—what if it could help us escape this loop? I had to find it. I had to convince Wade and Nicole, again, to join me.
I took a deep breath, my heart racing as I left the graveyard house behind. I trudged through the familiar landscape, past the trees and into town, where Caketopia awaited. It felt like a scene from a twisted play, repeating itself endlessly, but this time, I was determined to change the script.
As I entered Caketopia, the warm scent of baked goods hit me, and I nearly smiled. But that smile faded when I spotted Melissa cleaning the counters. I could almost feel the echo of my previous encounters swirling in my mind.
“Hey, Melissa,” I said, forcing cheerfulness into my voice, but her vacant expression hit me like a blow.
“Hi there!” she replied, her eyes darting to the mess behind the counter. “Do you need something?”
“Actually, I—” I hesitated, the weight of my urgency pressing against my chest. “I’m looking for Nicole. Is she around?”
Melissa shook her head. “Not sure. She usually comes by later. You should grab a pastry while you wait!”
I wanted to scream that I wasn’t here for pastries, but instead, I nodded and made my way deeper into Caketopia, the memory of better times haunting me like a ghost. The urge to give up clawed at my insides, but I pushed through it, knowing I had to keep trying.
Finally, Nicole walked in, her familiar figure standing out against the pastel colors of Caketopia. I rushed over, excitement bubbling within me, but when she turned to face me, I felt that familiar emptiness wash over me.
“Hi there!” she greeted, her brow furrowed slightly. “Do I know you?”
“It’s me! Mavobella!” I said, desperation creeping into my voice. “We’ve been through this before. I need your help!”
Nicole blinked, her confusion evident. “Sorry, but I don’t think we’ve met. What do you need?”
“Listen! I have a plan. We need to find that creature we encountered in the undersea cavern—the one we thought was a gem. If we can find it again, it might help us escape this endless loop!”
Boy did I sound cuckoo.
She crossed her arms, skepticism lining her features. “What are you talking about? And why should I trust you?”
“You’ll get it later. You should trust me because,” I replied, pulling out the physics book I had stashed away, its spine cracked from use. “This is the formula of resonance I figured out last time! If you can modify your gun to utilize the venom we gathered, we can amplify it, making it much more effective. Together, we can face whatever stands in our way.”
Nicole’s eyes flicked over the book, and I could see her weighing my words. “I don’t know… this sounds a bit out there.”
“Just give me a chance!” I urged, my heart racing. “I promise I’ll explain everything on the way. But I need your help. If you believe even a fraction of what I’m saying, we can do this!”
Nicole hesitated, then nodded slowly. “Alright. I’ll give it a shot. But first, I need to modify my gun.”
“Great! I’ll help,” I said, relief flooding through me. “We’ll need Wade on board too. He can help with the fight.”
“Wade?” she asked, glancing around as if expecting him to appear. “Do you know where he is?”
“Let’s find him together!” I urged, excitement bubbling up as I turned to leave Caketopia, with Nicole following closely behind.
We made our way through the familiar streets, the sense of urgency thrumming in my veins. Spotting Wade leaning against a wall, cleaning his sword, I felt a renewed sense of purpose.
“Wade!” I called out, striding toward him.
He looked up, surprise flickering across his features. “Do I know you?”
“No! Not this again!” I exclaimed, frustration bubbling over. “Wade, it’s me! Mavobella! We’ve fought together! We need to find that creature from the cavern—the one we thought was a gem. It’s the key to breaking this loop!”
He raised an eyebrow, skepticism evident. “Why should I believe you?”
“Because we have the chance to change everything,” I implored, searching for a connection that had been severed. “I’ve got a plan! Nicole is going to enhance her gun with the formula of resonance I.. no she created. It will give us the edge we need!”
Wade frowned, considering my words. “A formula? What’s in it for me?”
“The chance to escape this nightmare!” I said earnestly. “To break free from this cycle of endless repetition. You’ve felt it too, right? The weight of it all?”
“Wade, let's go.” Wade hardly argued with Nicole.
His resolve wavered, the fight in his eyes shifting to uncertainty. “Alright, let’s say I’m in. What’s the first step?”
“First, we help Nicole finish modifying her gun,” I said, hope igniting within me. “Then we head to the cavern and find that creature. Together, we can do this!”
With a reluctant nod, Wade pushed off the wall, determination replacing doubt. “Okay, lead the way.”
Nicole modified her gun, her fingers moving deftly over the mechanisms as she applied the formula of resonance I had shared. Wade watched intently, his sword glinting in the light, ready for whatever was to come.
“Okay, we’re set,” Nicole said, her voice steady but laced with adrenaline. “Let’s find that creature.”
We made our way to the shore, the salty breeze filling my lungs with a renewed sense of purpose. The water shimmered under the afternoon sun, a vast expanse hiding both danger and promise.
“Remember, we need to stick together,” I reminded them as we approached the water’s edge. “Once we touch the water, things could get chaotic.”
Wade nodded, gripping his sword tightly. “Let’s do this.”
We waded into the shallows, the cool water swirling around our ankles. As soon as I felt the waves lap at my legs, a surge of energy pulsed through the sea. In an instant, dark shapes emerged from the depths, gliding toward us with terrifying speed.
“Look out!” Nicole’s voice blasted through our link, a raw surge of panic hitting me just as the first monster breached the surface. Its tentacles thrashed wildly, casting sprays of water, while its luminous green eyes locked on us from the depths.
“Stay together!” Wade’s thoughts cut through the chaos, steady and fierce, as I saw him brace himself. Before I could move, the creatures lunged, their slimy forms crashing into us. I swung Ye, cutting through the water, while Wade’s sword flashed in sync with my movements. Nicole’s gun fired repeatedly, releasing bursts of neon-green venom, her focus sharp through the link, guiding our attacks with each shot.
“Keep moving!” My voice rippled through the bond, backed by a pulse of adrenaline and desperation. Another tentacle whipped past, just missing me. I felt the pressure from all sides, like we were fighting against the whole sea itself, but we had to make it to that cavern.
We pushed forward through the dark water, every heartbeat a pounding rhythm that matched the chaotic thrum of the monsters swarming us. Each strike, each victory gave us a glimmer of hope—if we could fend them off just a little longer, we’d reach the cavern.
“Almost there!” I sent out, amplifying the encouragement through the link. The mouth of the cavern loomed ahead, shadowed but unmistakable, like a dark promise. “Cover me!” Wade’s command echoed in my mind as he surged forward, cleaving through a tentacle that lunged too close. The water churned, and though exhaustion was creeping in, our shared determination blazed through the link.
With a final push, we dove into the cavern, the oppressive presence of the monsters hesitating at the entrance, their furious roars vibrating through the water. As if held back by some unseen boundary, they loomed there, their malevolent eyes watching.
Inside, an eerie calm settled over us, amplified through the link like a breath held too long. Dim light filtered through cracks in the rock, illuminating the chamber and revealing the creature we had come to find. It hovered near the back, nestled among strands of glowing seaweed, its fluffy form casting a faint glow against the darkness.
“There it is!” My exclamation pulsed through our connection, my heart racing. “It’s not a gem—it’s something much more.”
Wade’s caution rippled back. “Easy. We don’t want to frighten it.” His steady hand held his sword at the ready, his protective presence grounding us all.
Nicole’s awe washed over me. “It’s beautiful.” She drew closer, her gun steady but lowered as she took in the creature’s shimmering form. I could feel her admiration and wonder through the link, a rare vulnerability slipping past her usual guard.
I took a step forward, extending my hand. The creature’s large, luminous eyes met mine, and an inexplicable warmth surged between us, like it was reaching back, as if sensing our need and intent.
Then, a guttural growl echoed through the cavern entrance, resonating in our minds like a sharp warning. The sea monsters were regrouping. We had no time.
“Quick!” I urged through the link. “We have to take it with us!”
Together, we extended our hands, an unspoken understanding flowing between us. The cave brightened unnaturally like the first time. The creature nudged against my palm, a gentle, trusting presence that brightened our connection. Relief rippled through all of us, mixing with a newfound urgency.
“It trusts us,” I assured them, feeling its tentative acceptance like a heartbeat in my hand. “Let’s go!”
In a swift, coordinated motion, we lifted the creature, cradling it between us as we prepared to escape. The monsters’ roars outside grew louder, fueling our determination. Every thought, every emotion urged us onward.
“Now! Move!” Nicole’s command rang through the link, cutting through the tension as she led the way, her mind blazing with focus and courage.
We burst through the water, gasping for air as we finally emerged to the surface, the soft sand welcoming us back.
“Keep moving!” Wade urged, glancing back at the furious beasts that now floated above the water, their glowing eyes piercing through the darkness.
We sprinted down the beach, adrenaline coursing through our veins. I held the creature tightly, its soft warmth reassuring against the chaos surrounding us.
“Where to now?” Nicole asked, breathless, as we reached the treeline.
“We need to find a safe place to hide and figure out what to do next,” I replied, glancing back at the water where the monsters began to retreat, thwarted for now.
“Then let’s go!” Wade said, determination etched on his face.
As we ventured into the woods, I couldn’t shake the feeling that we had just taken our first real step toward breaking free from this endless loop. With the creature by our side, maybe—just maybe—we could uncover the truth and finally escape this nightmare.
