One Shot: Mother Nature
(Ya'll this does not end right so be warned
And Sharon Needles is my husband bye
Also, Farley as Black Widow? More likely than you think.
THIS WAS TWENTY ONE PAGES IN MY NOTEBOOK YIKES
My fav line: "His eyes are as blue as Heaven's light, scaring you more than his devillish grin.")
You listen to the sound of music, tapping the tip of your shoes to the beat. The band is an array of well-dressed percussionists who play with only their ears. The beautiful building was taller than the sky, showing off the richest of the Calore Dynasty. All of the high-class nobles through unnecessary balls in the walls of the place, serving champagne and varied flavors of cheese. They are easy targets, obviously, so you keep your eye over them protectively, waiting for the disguised villain to reveal himself.
"Nothing here seems incorrect," you report into your earpiece. Mare clicks her tongue, watching over the building from the outside. She has her arms ready for the, any second, incoming fight.
Farley adds, "That's the point of a disguise." She's underground with the other assassins, waiting for any negative signs to reveal herself.
Mare comments, "What do you think he's wearing, a fake mustache and a cubicle?"
A laugh escapes your lips before you scan the crowd again.
"Look for a flamemaker," Farley trails on, "anything a burner would use." She looks at her nails, not knowing what to do as she waits. Kilorn hears her, putting his mouth near her earpiece as she tries to continue talking. "Can't you just get birds to find them? Why are you doing it?"
You sigh, rolling your eyes even though they can't see. You are the stardust known as Mother Nature. When you were first created humans were only mere animalistic idiots storming around. Even though they lay under your hand, they know nothing of you. Now, they grow into toxic god-like creatures you wanted to learn more about.
You pretend to be human with them, pretending to be a simple mutant. And when the public gave you the name Mother Nature, you adored it more than anything.
You have the power to control the natural elements of the world; fire, water, air, and earth are all in your hands. You can also speak to animals and bugs, a power you can hardly use in New York City.
"First of all, no." You continue to watch over the audience. Black curly hair, blue eyes. Black curly hair, blue eyes. "The birds have no idea what to even look for, nevertheless..." your words faint as you make eye contact with a specific fancy-dressed boy, "do they care - hey, wait."
With only the sustained eye contact as a clue, the man turned and began walking in the opposite direction. You ignore the questions of your union while following the man, keeping an eye on his head until it was right in front of you. "Excuse me, s--"
The fire that abruptly interrupted you headed your way, but you curve your body with his shoulder as he whips around. Fire, something you absolutely despise. You raise your hands, grabbing the fire and putting your palms together to smother it immediately. The apocalypse in and out of the building was a faster symbol than you to secure the building. No minions getting in, no Maven getting out.
Your first move is kicking under his chin, knocking down his incomplete rhythm. He swings his fiery fist at you, which you counter with a duck and swipe at his knees. He burns a part of your shoulder but the unexpected jab stumbles him back. This battle is one of many, but somehow it feels different. Maybe it's the fact that his blue eyes manage to never leave yours.
You grunt as you hit his nose with the front of your wrist, almost missing him as he throws a punch into your side.
"Maven Calore, put your hands securely on the ground!"
Farley, thank Heavens.
She hurries in, scattering with the rest of the ability-less humans. They carry heavy guns, accouterments of less armor than leather.
"General Farley," he tries to begin before you cut him off.
"Hands, Maven."
He glares at you, trying to scare you. You stare back and even smile before he does what you say.
"Never thought I'd listen to Mother Nature," he spits.
"So you're a fan?" You flash another smile, letting Farley put the silent stone handcuffs onto him. He only fits a devilish smirk as he is turned around. You rub your goosebumps, still cold through the heatwave of the structure. You eye the black markings on the floor, listening to Mare's scoff when you exit behind Farley.
~
"And what are we going to do with him? He's obviously too unique for normal institutions, nevertheless Cal..." You trail off, gesturing to him from across the table. Farley leans in, eager for a response as Mare rubs his forearm. Kilorn stares at his fingers, listening distantly to the conversation.
Cal sighs, "Maven doesn't need imprisonment he needs us."
Farley laughs, "He needs fixing."
"And he's your brother so I don't understand this us equation you put us in." You snap, trailing your fingers against the human skin of your face.
Kilorn lifts his head, green eyes accusing you. "But he did seem oddly intrigued with you, Mother Nature."
You tilt your head, not even hiding your confusion. Kilorn adds, "why do you think that is?"
In a quick movement, your eyes widen and you point at Mare, the obvious acquaintance putting you on Maven's spotlight.
"He doesn't like me, he likes her!" It interests you about how Maven thinks. What does he see? Does he think this mere ant of a human is your friend? Or does he know how lowly you think of them?
"Defensive," Farley teases.
"But," Cal leans towards you, "if he escapes, I'm entrusting (Y/N) to not kill him."
You shrug, "We are in New York City, what am I going to do? Attack him with pigeons?"
~
"I'm not going in there." You fight Cal's grasp as he leads you to Maven's cell. Cal stops only a few feet away as he holds onto your shoulders.
"Somebody needs to talk to him and you're the least violent person here."
"He's your brother."
"Half brother," he pauses, "He hates me. He won't listen to what I have to say."
"But you think he'll listen to me."
"Process of elimination." Fair argument. Mare and Farley would probably try to kill him. He won't even speak to Kilorn, nevertheless Cal.
You loosen yourself in his grasp and walk in front of Maven's cell. Cal smiles before using his I.D. to unlock the door. The warmth of the room hits you as you walk in, leaving Cal behind. The only thing between you and Maven is a glass, and whether it was made to keep him in or Mare out, you don't know.
"Maven." You call, steadying your stance before making eye contact with him. His eyes are as blue as Heaven's light, scaring you more than his devilish grin.
"You, again."
"Did you miss me?"
He raises his hand in a surrender, his palms covered in black and silver bruises. You force a smile, realizing how weirdly comfortable you feel in his presence. His dashing smirk catches you off guard but you don't let it show.
You cross your arms, "Who are you?"
"I thought this was an interrogation, not a meet-and-greet."
"Tell me about yourself. I want to hear about Maven through his own eyes not his brother's and," you lighten your tone subconsciously, "ex-fiance."
Almost offended, he sneers. His vision circles the room as he steps forward.
"I'd like to hear about you, new one."
You let out a chuckle, surprising him at most. He tilts his head, curling hair falling in his face.
You clasp your hands together, "I don't know what to talk about."
The corner of his mouth lifts in a genuine half-smile, "you don't know?"
All you can do is shrug, thinking of millions of things you've experienced in your 4.543 billion years of living. You glance up at the cameras, sheepishly smiling at Farley.
She leans back in her chair, nudging Kilorn. "Why are they having a normal conversation?"
Maven continues, "Anything? What about your childhood? Embarrassing, traumatic memories--"
"I guess there was this train," your eyes fall to the floor.
"A train?"
"Yes, and it was beautiful. All the humans would stalk the tracks just to watch it go. The children learned that if you put pennies on the tracks they would flatten under the weight. Soon, they started putting pebbles on the tracks instead, watching as they turned to dust. If they put anything bigger than their tiny fists the conductor would stop the train just to come out and yell at them.
"Of course, they'd run away before they'd get in trouble. It was funny because if they ran home the conductor would know who they were and tell their parents. So instead, they'd just run around the block until the elderly conductor would go away."
Maven stood perfectly still, patiently interested in your story. "How long did they do that for?"
You thought for a second, "until the train stopped running."
"Why did it stop? Was there a death?"
You feel comfortable with Maven, you could practically feel how he thought of himself highly of others. It was relieving, at least.
"Don't think so negatively, my dear. Honestly, you should try positivity exercises like thinking about the happiness of living things."
He almost looked offended, "Happiness of living things?"
"Cal," you suggest.
He chuckles, putting a fist on the glass.
"Cal lost hope in me years ago."
"Cal loves you, Maven. He put me here because he wanted you to feel safe." Your tone was soft and mature, nurturing him. He only responds sarcastically.
"Thanks, tell him it worked."
"Mare and Farley wanted to throw you into an institution. Cal fought and fought so you could stay here with us. And here you are."
His head leans down but his eyes remain on yours, capturing you in his mind.
"What did you want?" He asks, body stiff.
"I didn't want you to leave," you admit. He takes every one of your words and takes them to heart, adding new meanings to them. Maven remains quiet, not doing anything but staring. You sigh in defeat before walking towards the exit.
"Goodbye, Mother Nature."
Your own stubbornness forces you not to respond. All you do is close the door and head towards the kitchen area.
"Why did the train stop?" Cal asks, following behind you as you walk. You grin when you hear his voice.
"It didn't."
~
"You walked in there like a blind dog, I'm proud." Mare comments, biting into her apple slice. You nod with a smile, looking down at the floor in thought. The edging uneasiness robs you of an appetite.
"I feel as if I should just stand outside of his room and guard him."
"His cell, (Y/N), he's a criminal."
"And that's why I don't trust him." You lie, stepping away from the aircraft's metal dining table. The lights in the kitchen shut off, lasting only mere seconds before flickering back on. You turn to Mare but she's just as confused as you are.
"Go watch Maven." She commands before grabbing your hand. She leaves her food on the table before heading out the door, hearing sentinels running down the halls. You both continue out of the room until the end, where you both split in different directions. The lights continue to flicker and flicker as turbulence challenges your agility. As quickly as it started, the lights shut off completely.
Scan, open, close. Maven is too busy eyeing something out of the window to acknowledge your entrance. The emergency lights ignite the room in a red color, testing your ability to remain calm.
"Maven, love, how do I get to you?" You yell politely, searching the walls for a way to get into the glass chamber. He looks at you, sympathy in his eyes. Your fingers find a keypad as you open it, exploring your memory for the code. You scream, throwing a fist at the wall in frustration. He walks up to you and puts a hand on the glass.
"Leave the craft," he warns as you put his forehead on the glass, "NOW."
"I'm not leaving you!" You yell, whipping your head at him. He stills, staring at you with wide eyes. Why am I acting like this? Your mind begs you to stop, catching romantic feelings should be the least of your worries. But this human, so familiar to you, is beyond comparison to the rest of the world. You have never felt frustration, protectiveness, and anger about one single human ever before in your life. What else can he make you feel?
Your heart drops as the jet declines, the loss of gravity lifting you off of your feet. Mavens' hands ignite, the blue flame melting the glass as he focuses all of his energy on it. Your stomach squeezes as you wait for the moment you slam into the floor and crack your head open. The room keeps falling and falling, spinning you around the room as it circles. Maven fits his body through the hole he created before he tries to reach you.
And then your mind disappears as gravity returns. You expect an open skull once you reach the floor, but all you got was the sound of Maven's grunts. You look up, quickly collecting yourself and escaping his protective grasp. Your breath refuses to slow as you look down at him.
You notice the sun shining in your face, scaring you more than he could. You can see the everlasting fields of grass that were once miles below you.
"Maven..."
He eyes you as he gets up, scanning your body to see if you had any bruises. You turn towards the door, jumping back once you notice its convulsions. Your military trained reflexes kick in as you fall into a battle stance, holding your hands up and preparing yourself for any necessary precautions. The door and the entire wall is ripped away to reveal one beautiful magnetron.
Evangeline's eyes find you first and she drops the wall in disapointment. You relax, sliding out of your position and finding yourself by Maven's side.
"Very naughty to kidnap your husband's brother," you tease while gripping onto Maven's wrist. He eyes darken over, threatening to burn your hand.
"Speaking of brothers," Maven suggests, smiling. Evangeline ignores your words and focuses on Maven, pointing at the sky, "taking the rest of the ship."
Your eyebrows raise before the smile creeps onto your face. Humans, so interesting. Betraying others in a second.
Maven steps onto the grass and you mimic his actions, being gentle as you crush the nature of your power.
"You're disposing of my associates?"
Evangeline smiles, "and you're allowing with that?"
"Replaceable."
Maven smiles at your response, leaning his head back as he laughs. His eyes scan your body, "You are so fun."
~
"Why all of Cal's buildings? Because they used to be yours?" You ask, coffee in one hand and your phone in the other. Maven plants his feet on Evangeline's coffee table to her disliking.
"Just to teach him not to take my stuff."
Evangeline nods in confirmation, satisfying your curiosity. She settles into her lazy chair, her silver hair braided down the front loosely. She wears no armor or leather, just mere cotton comfort clothes. She holds a hot cup of coffee, seeming unphased by the scolding heat.
"He took my father's business, I don't side with him any longer."
Ptolemus enters the room with wild hair and a wicked smile, nodding in his sister's direction. "She wants his death as an excuse to get all of the money."
She doesn't respond, only sipping her coffee with a grin. You mimic her actions, looking at Maven, who is sitting at the other end of the couch. He breathes are the steadiest you've ever seen. He looks peaceful and it settles you. Humans are so interesting.
~
You carry an inedible glass of wine in your hand, dressed in head to toe with the fanciest acquire from Elane's closet. Your dress, blue and gold with a thigh slit in it, keeps Maven to your side. You pass as the perfect couple.
He looks over the people, his head filled with tortuous thoughts in spite of his brother. A part of you feels bad for Cal and his hopeless respect for his brother. But overall, you don't really care whose heart gets broken in this game of being human.
"See any of them?" You whisper in his ear.
Sometimes you miss those useful earpieces Farley had.
He shakes his head and puts a hand on your waist before leading you deeper into the crowd. People brush against you left and right, smooshing you close to Maven's chest. His warmth increased almost like it was by will, comforting you more than it should have. Your heartbeat quickens, making you breathless as you look up into Maven's eyes. It was only when his fists started heating up did you stand to the side. Before the burst of fire was the crack of lightning, sending in a familiar frenzy. The lightning headed towards Maven quickly. Once upon a time, you would have used your power to aid Mare. But now, with your ability, the lightning disappeared before it could fully even develope. You smother all of her lightning, watching her stress before sending her against the wall with a gust of strong wind.
Maven smiles, burning the walls and floors with one pound of his fists. Mare tries to get up but everything she does is canceled out by your superior ability. It isn't until Cal walked in, challenged by Evangeline, did Maven stop his plan. You lift both of your hands in opposite directions, one hand sending strong winds at Mare to keep her silent and the other smothering Cal's fire. You groan, focusing on too many actions at once. Maven stares at his brother, lifting his hands to burn him. The moment of stillness was all Farley needed to conquer Maven. The gunshot was louder than the screams of the people. It echoed throughout the building, sending vibrations throughout your body. You freeze, dropping your hands. Mare falls to the floor at the same time Maven did.
In a hurry, you sit Maven down and prop him up in your hands. Evangeline runs near, locking Mare and Cal in a metal cage to keep you safe. Cal screams, thrashing around as he watches his dying brother.
"You're safe," is all you can say. You can feel the cold seeping throughout your body. Is this sadness? Is this despair? Is this what it's like to lose someone you care about?
Maven smiles, resting his cold hands on yours.
"Tell me the story of the train again." He whispers above all noise. You shrink, smiling as your throat sores.
"Of course," you squeak out. You take a deep breath, trying to steady your voice. "All the humans loved the train, especially the children."
He coughs, shining silver blood spilling from his lips.
"The children learned that the trains would flatten pennies, marvelous discovery, obviously. They even tried pebbles and watch them crush to dust. Soon, they attempted bigger rocks. The conductor didn't like that very much."
Maven laughs, his grip tightening on your hand as you rock him back and forth. A whimper escapes your lips as you notice the silence. Evangeline was looking down, listening to your story with a sorrowful smile.
"They would always run, run, run away before the conductor could see who they were."
He rests his head on your chest, fighting the urge to close his eyes. He sniffs, a tear falling down his cheek as he struggled to continue to listen.
"And they were very smart, knowing that if they ran home the conductor would see. Instead, they would just race around the block. He didn't care enough, so he left. This happened a lot."
Maven laughs, taking your hand and kissing your knuckles. You look down at him with water dripping from your eyelashes. "Intelligent children," he whispered. You nod, the tingle of his lips on your skin making you feel warm. What else could he make you feel?
"You will be cherished, my love." You coo, kissing his forehead. He smiles warmly, his eyes wearing an odd coat of satisfaction. His grip on your hand loosens as his head falls back. You gasp before placing him on the floor, still clutching him tightly.
Why did it have to end so soon? Why couldn't he have helped you feel more things human feel?
A single tear manages to roll off of your cheek, landing onto his chest. There, a small silver flower blooms in its place.
