Chapter Twenty Six
“Abigail!”, Ian quickly stood up to his feet the moment she walked into her apartment to engulf her in a hug. She was shocked of seeing him back so soon, but she was mostly petrified of seeing him after what she had done. She nearly cried onto his shoulder the minute she was locked safely in his warm embrace but couldn't give it away that something was wrong.
“Babe, what are you doing here? I thought you said you'll be back tomorrow?”, she smiled nervously as she walked past him, she couldn't even look at him in the eye.
“The trip ended earlier than I expected. Stephanie called me in panic last night to tell me that you're not home, and she was worried something had happened to you”.
“She's finally asleep”, Luther appeared from the direction of Stephanie room. He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw her, and he hugged her.
“Abbie, thank goodness you're okay”, he released her, and she was dumbfounded of what was really going
“What's going on?”
“Stephanie was really convinced that Angie had something to do with you not coming home last night. She thought something bad had happened. She was even at the verge of calling the police”, Luther explained and her heart sank as even more guilt washed over her.
“Where were you?”, Ian's question caused her insides to twist and crumble in fear. She hasn't come to terms with what had happened to even say it out loud. His piercing look caused her to stutter.
“I was at the library. I had to do some....research”, his face softened at her reply as he gave a nod.
“Why didn't you at least text us that you were okay?”
“My battery died”, that was the only truth from her side of the story and the two men seemed to believe it as they both nodded simultaneously. “I'm sorry”, her voice threatened to break as tears pricked her eyes.
“It's fine. I'm glad you're okay and safe”, he pulled her closer to him.
“I have to get going”, Luther quickly cleared his throat, interrupting on the couple as they shared a moment together. “I'll come check on Stephanie later on”, he walked towards the door.
“I'll see you later Champ “, Ian gave a mini salute as Abigail gave a small wave
“I'll see you lovebirds later”, Luther closed the door behind him. His gaze diverted to her yet again, and she drew a breath, biting the inside of her cheek as they stared into each other's eyes. Her heartbeat accelerated as a cry threatened to escape from her lips.
He noticed her teary eyes looking up at him, and he cupped her face in his hands. “Are you okay sweetheart?”
She gave a short smile as she nodded her head in agreement. She didn't even want to blink because tears would stream down her face.
“I just missed you, that's all”
His lips turned out in a mischievous smile as he had this look in his eyes. “How much did you miss me?”
“So, so much”, she smiled before he leaned to connect their lips together. The second she closed her eyes, tears started streaming down her face. He could taste the saltiness of her tears during the kiss that he withdrew to look at her.
“Are you sure you're okay?”
“Never been better”
“I could lose my license, Austin”, he watched as his doctor paced up and down in his office. The truth about his condition had been revealed. The young doctor couldn't keep on telling a lie anymore. His practice was at stake.
“I know Joseph, but I still need a little more time”, he begged desperately. He couldn't afford for the truth to come out now. He still hasn't achieved his mission. He was so close to the truth, he could feel it in his bones.
“I can't carry on with the misdiagnosis. Just tell your family the truth that you regained your memory back”.
“I can't”, he had begun getting flashbacks of his past for the last couple of days after spending the night with Abigail. Slowly he pieced the puzzle pieces together, but he was still missing the big secret, of why Abigail left him that night. When he woke up the following day with her nowhere to be seen, he realized that he remembered everything, to the last detail leading to his accident.
“Austin, your medical records show that nothing is wrong with you anymore. You know your mother will demand to see them herself”.
“Forge them or something. They can never find out that I regained my memory back. It will jeopardize everything for me”, he watched as the young man shook his head in disagreement.
After minutes of trying to convince him, the doctor walked out of his office, not wanting to hear a word more from him to meet Angie and Mira in the waiting area who quickly stood up to meet his gaze. The anticipation of wanting to hear what he had to say to them sliced through him. He heaved a sigh before shaking his head.
“I'm sorry but there's still no change in his condition”
“Can you believe the wedding is in two days?”, Cleo exclaimed excitedly as she and Abigail went through some last minute briefing together. Her mind was so far away from every thing. The guilt of what she had done was eating her up alive. She couldn't lie to Ian anymore, he had to know the truth.
“Cleo, thank you for everything you've done for me”, she took her hand and hers and the other woman's features softened as she gave her hand a gentle squeeze
“There's no rush to thank me now, you can thank me properly after your fairy tale wedding Abbie”
The word wedding made her cringe. She was uncertain it was still going to happen after tonight, after she tells Ian the truth of what really happened that unfortunate night.
“I'm not sure there's going to be a wedding anymore”, she watched as Cleo's face went pale and her green eyes looked at her in confusion
“What do you mean by that Abbie?”, she didn't wait to reply to her question as she stood to her feet
“I'll keep in touch”, she turned on her feet, leaving the other woman speechless in the restaurant
She knocked twice on Ian's door and waited. The door was pulled open a couple of seconds later than Ian's eyebrows arched up at the sight of her, he was still on a call with someone.
“She's right here Cleo. I'll talk to her and get back to you okay?”, he paused for a second as he listened to the other woman panicking on the other line.
“Okay cool, bye”, he put the receiver down as he closed the door behind her and gave a helpless gesture
“What's going on Abbie?”, he turned his lips in a frown. “Why is Cleo convinced that we're calling off the wedding?”
She ran her hand through her hair she plobbed down the couch, burying her face in her hands and started crying. He was taken aback by her actions as he knelt in front of her, clearly puzzled of what was going on.
“Talk to me”, he encouraged softly as he peeled her hands gently off her face so that she could look at him. “What's wrong?”
It killed her knowing she had to break it down to him, and she couldn't find the courage to continue
“Abbie...”, his voice trailed as he searched for her eyes. “Are you getting cold feet?”, he questioned as she looked at him. “Is that what this is?”, he prompted, but it caused more tears to stream down her face.
“Cause sweetheart if it is, then it's completely normal-”
“I can't do this any more Ian”, his heart dropped at her revelation. His eyes saddened as he watched her shake her head before mouthing, “I'm sorry”.
“What do you mean you can't do this any more Abbie?”, he stuttered nervously as he tried taking her hands in his, she kept withdrawing her hands each time
“Are you breaking up with me?”, his voice threatened to break. Her not saying anything just made him grow infuriated every second. He wanted to know what she meant by what she was saying.
“I just can't-”, she sobbed, breaking his heart even more
He couldn't be patient anymore. “Can you just tell me what's going on Abbie?”
“I can't start our marriage on a lie”, she cried, his eyebrows knitting up in confusion. Nothing she was saying made any sense.
“What lie? What are you talking about?”
She drew a breath. “That night I said I was at the library...”, she rose her eyes to see him give a short nod, motioning with his face that she continues. “I wasn't at the library. I was with Austin”, she watched as he blinked at her confession, his heart sinking deeper than it had already. He was never ready to see her opening her mouth to tear his heart into pieces,
“I slept with him”
