Chapter 5 - Unlikely But Possible
"Excuse me you're what" responded Matthew, standing across the room.
William stood near the door, replying calmly;
"I don't have neither the time nor the patience to explain it to all of you, so I just want Brian to come" he responded authoritatively.
"What do you mean you're going? Didn't you just say that it was a very dangerous mission?" questioned Jaiden. And she was correct; somewhat.
"So you're telling me you're trying to get Brian involved in this? Are you out of your mind? I may sound weird saying this but seriously; have some common sense!" Terrence added onto the argument.
"Listen, I won't explain now since I don't have enough time, so I want Brian to stand up and come with me." William responded once more, this time in a solid tone.
"Why is it me that has to go? Why not Terrence, or better yet; no one?" Asked Brian, confused.
It was all so sudden too; one second they were discussing a theory and the next they're arguing about whether or not a minor should go to a crime in action.
"That aura you have, you're gonna need it. That's why only you can come. I need you to come now so I can explain without anyone being in the way." William replied. He was losing his patience.
Brian didn't agree before. But he hadn't noticed until now that, he wanted to know what that aura was so badly he'd risk his life. He didn't know when, or even why it had happened. He could barely grasp what were his motives when agreeing to go with William, but he didn't doubt his choice. Rarely did he feel confident about his actions, more so in something as important as this, but he did.
He wasn't scared. He was consumed by the curiosity. And he knew it would never stop until he was satisfied.
It was a Pandora's Box, he wanted open.
"You can't just walk in here and take Brian with you without explaining why!" expressed Terrence.
"I'll go." Brian interjected.
"I've had enough of being around you people, I'm going home" proclaimed Matthew. He walked through the door and headed back to his apartment.
"But why? I don't understand why you would go with this, guy, who mind you we've known for like, a few days!" Terrence protested against Brian's decision.
Brian did not respond, instead he left the tree house, closely followed by William.
They both walked towards some nearby vegetation, unnecessarily hiding from anyone nearby before William explained.
"We're going to help Roman." William started.
"So that's what this was about then." Brian replied, frantically looking around for any signs of people.
"Also for you to understand what the aura is, now let's go we wasted enough time" William replied before standing up.
Brian stood up as well and they started walking silently, trying to be as noiseless as is possible. Moments later, leaves ruffled near them, and a voice; Terrence's voice, was heard.
"I wouldn't really let you go by your own you know." He said before walking through the vegetation and becoming visible to the duo.
Startled, Brian responded "Glad you're here because I don't like doing this by my own."
"I would start an argument but I have nothing against you Terrence, so I wouldn't mind you tagging along; as long as you don't get in the way, k?" William assessed Terrence.
"Got it" Terrence vaguely replied before the, now trio, kept walking.
They soon departed the bushy ambient of the forest, delving into the technologically advanced streets which had scarce crowds in several places, it appeared a famous, rich person was to be hosting an expo later in the day, and many crowds were gathered in stations selling tickets to the event.
It was not ignored by the trio, but yet it was deemed irrelevant, they had to continue towards the dangerous area in which the crime was taking place.
Soon, the streets started feeling more empty, and the lack of people became noticeable. This was the sign that they were nearby, police usually close off a certain degree of area, but the crime must've been so recent that they hadn't finished blocking off all of the perimeter.
"Hey, how close are you willing to get us to this thing?" Terrence asked calmly.
"Speaking of which, you do know where it is right?" Brian added onto the questions.
"Of course I know where this is taking place, it's all over the news. Also, don't worry, there are various places from which we can watch from a distance." William casually responded.
Soon enough, it came into view. There was a yellow 'Warning!' tape stretched across the street, continuing far after what they could see.
"I'm not willing to go past the tape, I think that'd be illegal." Terrence plainly said, studying the yellow tape he had seen before, somewhere else.
"We won't need to" William responded, pointing towards an old, decrepit building, with graffiti scattered around it's walls.
William was the first to enter the open-aired building, swiftly followed by Brian and Terrence. The trio soon ran up a decently long set of stairs, and reached a reasonable altitude from which they could view the crime in action.
Brian, who was gasping for breath, asked William
"So; where even is the crime taking place?"
William briefly looked around before answering;
"I heard in the news station that it's taking place in some shop; though I don't think they knew why."
"It's over there I think, I see the edge of a police car" said Terrence, pointing to their right.
"Then we need to get higher" Brian added before walking up to the stairs and running up the stairs. Terrence and Brian quickly followed, and soon they got to the top of the building.
"I see them now" proclaimed Brian, looking at the scene. William and Terrence stood besides him, spectating the chaos that was taking place in the street.
Half a dozen police cars were stationed around a building. A dozen or so cops were behind the afore-mentioned cars, immobile.
"Now that we're here, you think you can let us in on what's going on?" asked Terrence, spectating the scene.
"In all honesty no one really knows what, and the police were ordered not to inform anyone. But I do know that it's only one individual, and that whoever it is, he's classified as highly dangerous." explained William.
Soon, all of the trio's attention was converged towards the scene.
The police were moving towards the building, slowly entering the shop. Soon enough they were all out of sight, and the trio couldn't see anything except for the various cars around the shop.
"What's happening?" asked Brian, still curious as to why William had brought him with him.
"They're going in, special police movement. They want to corner whoever's inside, they only do this when the person is a high threat though, so whoever's inside must be dangerous." Answered Terrence.
"How do you know that? Did you work at a police station or something?" questioned William, still looking around the area.
Terrence remained silent, ignoring the question. At the scene, nothing moved, everything remained immobile; and the suspense was building up.
"He's over there!" pointed William. A figure was sprinting through the streets unnoticed, presumably the criminal.
"Let's tell the police! They probably don't know where he went!" exclaimed Brian. William remained silent for a few seconds before answering;
"We need to go ourselves"
"You want us to go after a criminal that, mind you is 'high class' for the police?" questioned Brian angrily.
William sighed; turned around and started walking towards the center of the building.
"Where are you going? You're going to back away now?" asked Terrence.
Suddenly, William punched through the floor, causing a 5 foot wide hole in the roof of the decrepit building.
"This is what the aura can do, you can do something similar." William explained.
"Are you seriously suggesting that we chase that guy!? Like, I have no idea how you managed to do what you just did, but obviously I'm not getting convinced by you" responded Brian.
William sighed; for all of his hardest efforts he failed to explain why the aura was so important.
"I think; that if he can make a hole just like that, he deserves to be given a chance." Terrence surprisingly said.
"You're saying I should risk my life because some random person made a hole?" asked Brian, more angry than before.
"First of all, you were the one that made the decision to go with William in the first place; so I suggest you go through with it. Secondly, if anything were to go wrong I could tell the police." Terrence responded.
Brian thought for a few moments. Terrence had a point, there was no point in going with William if he didn't go through with it.
Brian sighed once more, before saying;
"Alright then, I'll do this. But if I die, it's on William. There's no point in retreating now." Brian stated.
"Don't worry, you'll be fine. I'll stay here a little longer just so I can see you from a distance, you guys go now before he gets away." Terrence replied.
After the duo climbs down the stairs, they start heading towards the general direction in which the criminal was heading in.
A good 5 minutes of trotting after, they were close enough to the criminal that they could see him.
"Slow down, he'll see us" stated William, coming to a stop.
Brian stopped, and they were both gasping for breath whilst keeping the criminal in sight. The guy wasn't all that fast, but he had a lot of running stamina.
Soon the duo resumes running after the criminal, before he notices them and turns around.
William and Brian stop, and after quickly gasping for breath; they walk towards the criminal.
(Went back to being detailed)
The soft wind blew across the barren field, setting the scene for the unnecessary confrontation that was about to commence. The criminal stands a good 10 feet away from the duo, not retreating but instead remaining still.
The silence was soon interrupted by the aforementioned opponent, who exclaimed;
"You want what? Excuse me but I never said ya could tag along. I don't want to be having company ya know? I prefer being alone. So if ya don't want to be looking for trouble then; I recommend ya leave now."
Silence soon returned, but not nearly as stretched as the previous one. It was again to be interrupted by the same person,
"So ya deaf or something?" The criminal asked rhetorically.
"We're not here to help you, we're here to get you." William stated, standing his ground.
"Are ya braindead or sum? Ya wanna be a superman? Well sorry but I've got business to attend you dumbag" responded the criminal, whom didn't move for a few seconds, and when he was going to, William replied;
"Well we aren't scared of you, nor will we be in a million years!" William bluffed. He should not get into unnecessary trouble, he always forgot that.
Out of nowhere, an invisible shock wave blasts William a few feet across the floor. It seemed to come from the criminal's arm.
"Like I said, you two should leave me alone. I don't want to be on dah headlines." Warned the adversary once more.
William swiftly stood up and in a few seconds began running towards the opponent. But before he could deliver his theoretically deadly blow, he once more got hit by the invisible shock wave, knocking him back twice as far.
Quickly enough, Brian runs towards the foe and aims to grab his arms.
The waves were being delivered from his arms, so that implied that if he got a hold of them, the criminal wouldn't be able to aim correctly.
Once more, he gets kicked and consecutively blasted across the field.
Minutes later, William wakes up to see Terrence standing near Brian. Soon, Terrence realizes that William's awake and walks towards him.
"Whatever went wrong you can explain later. What matters now is that the police are after him. Also what were you even thinking?" questioned Terrence.
"You can't argue, you sided with me remember?" replied William.
Terrence ignored the counterargument and proceeded to wake Brian up.
The sun rose the precedent day, filling up the tree house's bedroom. Brian was awoken by the sounds of footsteps and creaking wood.
Brian sat on his comfortable bed as he spectated William drink some hot chocolate.
"This was your fault" Brian said, while noticing his arm was sore from the battle that took place.
William peacefully ignored Brian's statement and continued to drink his hot cocoa, shaking it to make the cup lose heat.
"Remind me why I did that." Brian said before standing up from his bed and stretching for a couple of seconds.
"We still aren't strong enough to face that dude yet." William spoke up, before consequently taking a small sip of his hot cocoa once more.
"So what do you suggest we do? Brian asked before walking towards the bathroom with his toothbrush in hand.
William finished drinking his hot cocoa and put it on the table.
"Well, you know the saying practice makes perfect?"
A couple of seconds pass by as the sound of Brian scrubbing his teeth is faintly heard.
Brian comes out of the bathroom and heads to the kitchen. Some more seconds pass by before he remembered what William said and responded,
"You mean-"
"Yeah, we need to practice"
Brian came out of the kitchen with a quickly made ham and cheese sandwich.
Brian sat down and started munching the sandwich.
"And I mean now" William extended his statement.
"Sure, after I finish we can head to the building" Brian replied before taking a second bite out of the sandwich.
William walked towards the exit.
"Don't take too long, I'll be outside" he said before climbing down the stairs.
A couple minutes later, Brian head outside with a pair of water bottles in hand. "Ok, let's go" Brian handed Will a frozen water bottle before they headed to the old building.
Roman was at his office. He had been tasked with getting through a million different cases, all simple questions and similar structuring. None of these cases were real cases, just piles of paper that were sent daily to get through. These, instead of being cases that were what he had imagined he would be doing, were just piles of paperwork that were the chore of any police department.
Thinking about it wouldn't make them disappear though, so as he snapped back to reality, ope there goes gravi-
'Darn it' he thought, he was trying to avoid doing this for a couple of days already, he simply could not let another one pass by. He lifted his pen and started filling out the requests automatically, not paying much attention to the paperwork itself, but simply trying to get through it.
A couple of papers later, a knock on his door was heard, quickly followed by the sound of said door opening and a police officer entering the room.
He takes a look around before informing Roman,
"Uhh, chief sent you to investigate a case, more details in the yellow folder on the table. I'll take over the paperwork for ya."
Delighted to hear the news, Roman thanked the police officer and stood up. He directed the officer to which papers he had done and left the room.
Roman walked down the hallway and stopped by the table. He grabbed the yellow folder and opened it whilst he walked towards the exit.
The paper informed that he was to investigate the crime scene of the criminal's case.
Roman closed the folder and opened his car door, consequentially entering his car and putting the folder in the passenger seat. He turned on his car and drove away from the station.
William and Brian were resting from the training. So far, they had focused on cardiovascular endurance rather than their actual powers. They couldn't expect their powers to magically give them the energy to run for long periods of time, or have fast reflexes.
Naturally, they were tired and decided to take a short break before practicing their reflexes.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed throughout the open room, indicating the approach of a person. Step by step, Roman walked up the stairs until reaching the floor in which Brian and Will were.
Roman looked around, quickly noticing where Brian and William were and walking towards them.
"What are you doing here?" Roman asked the duo whilst he approached them casually.
"You know, doing exercise" William replied before giving Roman a friendly fist bump.
"I see then, just came to check over on you before I went on a case I got." Roman replied before sitting down.
"Which one?" Brian chirped into the conversation.
"The criminal's case, the one in the mall. There's a lot of stuff to uncover there, so it might take a while." Roman replied casually, spectating the horizon full of small buildings.
"I don't know if that's good news or bad news" replied William.
"Look at it however you want, point is I have some work to do." Roman replied before quickly standing up.
"You're already leaving?" said Brian whilst Roman walked towards the staircase.
"Police officers can never waste time, most of their job depends on being early." Answered William as Roman slowly walked down the staircase.
Roman got into his car. He quickly turned the engine on and drove off towards the mall. In a couple of short minutes, he arrived at the mall.
He turned off the car's engine and walked towards the tall building. Passing under the yellow 'warning' tape and showing his badge to a nearby police officer, he entered into the wide, silent areas of the mall.
Inside were a pair of detectives, already working on examining the floor and walls of the rooms nearby.
Roman passed by them, and entered into the small business in which the criminal had taken one of the employee's life. There was already a detective inside, he had been examining the business' structure and studying the rooms inside.
Roman greeted the officer, which greeted him back and directed him to the front of the business, where the criminal had been threatening the employees.
Roman did as directed by the friendly detective and head to the front of the business. There he examined the countertop and the other various sections of the front.
He opened the cashier's box, which he found had been untouched by anyone. There were little to no visible fingerprints.
That was undoubtedly odd, though it wasn't a big revelation, it was still relevant to know the criminal's motives.
Roman proceeded to study the countertop. It was made of smoothly constructed marble, and had a wide space for objects.
Studying the marble, Roman noticed that there were pieces of unusually broken glass, in weird arrangements. Unlike most broken pieces, the glass didn't seem to have any signs of direct impact.
Roman picked up a glass piece, it looked cracked, sure; but it was all around. He sampled the glass, and proceeded to study the site.
A couple of more tiny clues and possibly relevant details later, nighttime was approaching and Roman was worn off.
He made his way towards his car, walking under the warning tape once more.
Roman sighed, opened his car door, placed his instruments on the passenger seat and turned the car engine on.
He waved to the police officer who had still been standing there, protecting the detectives inside, and drove off to the police station.
After a long first day of training, William and Brian were ready to go home.
They hadn't made a lot of progress, but they knew what they needed to improve.
"Come on, it's getting dark" said Brian, waiting for William to finish drinking the last of his water.
William threw the water bottle into a trashcan, and ran over to the staircase, in which Brian had already left.
A couple of moments later Will caught up with Brian,
"That was good training" William said whilst recovering from his short sprint.
"Yeah, we have to improve though. Will we come back tomorrow?" Brian asked William whilst they walked down the streets. A loud car drove by as William prepared to answer.
"Probably will. If not then I'll make a schedule." Replied William.
Brian agreed and they walked into the park.
Roman drove off, away from the police station. He wanted to do one last thing before finishing his day.
He stopped by the hospital nearby. Roman entered the establishment, quickly showed his badge to the nearest nurse and asked for directions to the patient.
In a couple of twists and turns, he arrived at hospital room 7b. Roman knocked on the door gently, and waited for a few seconds.
Soon enough, the door was opened by a doctor inside. Roman asked to be alone with the patient for a minute or so, the doctor nodded and left the room.
"Good evening" Roman said gently before showing the patient his police badge.
"What can I help you with officer?" replied the patient calmly.
"Your coworker, what happened?" Roman asked the patient whilst sitting down on a nearby chair.
"I'm afraid you already know that." The patient replied.
"How did it happen?" Asked Roman patiently.
"I'm not sure, it's hard to explain. It was some sort of trickery, a huge whatever it was, came out of that guy's hands. It's hard to understand." The patient replied with honesty.
"I understand" Roman answered.
The doctor entered the room and informed Roman that he had to leave.
Roman nodded and left the room.
Soon enough, Roman was driving on his way home. He knew the information would help him figure out the case.
It was nighttime. Or even better yet, it was time.
He was sure he had found it; this was the place.
There was no way he had it wrong.
He finally could get what he wanted.
All that pain had to be worth it.
The criminal walked his way up a hill.
Towards a small wooden house, that had a wooden chair on the outside.
