Chapter 4 - A Science Class

The wind blew loudly, imitating that of a vortex. A few figures walked down the dusty and faded pavement. The silhouettes of their weapons remain immobile despite the figures being in constant movement. Their walking looked mechanical, as if it was infused into them, inhuman; to say the least.

They reach a small house, most of the inside is pitch black and the smell of ashes fills the surrounding air. One of the figures pulled a cord, activating a non-LED lightbulb, the light revealing another person sitting on a wooden chair.

The man had spoken up, his voice deep and hoarse.

"I rather you had called me earlier" the person standing up stated.

"That would interfere with the plan" the man spoke up.

"Let's get to the point." The silhouette sat down. Then waved to the man to sit down. After both had settled, they continued;

"We'll attack in 24 hours." Said the man, monotonal. A silence absorbed time, which was in a few minutes broken by the words of the silhouette;

"You can go now. I have things to attend to."

The man stood up, and alongside his troop, walked away from the mysterious silhouette who was; undeniably, smiling from inside the darkness.

A few hours later, alongside with the sun; Terrence rose from his bed, shielding his eyes from the massive strike of light he had received.

Knocked out of sleep and now in a sore mood, he brushed his teeth and made a simple sandwich. He sat down on a chair and started gobbling, more slowly than usual, his sandwich.

Within the timespan of a few minutes, William walked up to him.

"Good morning Terrence"

"You opened the window besides my bed?"

"Um yeah."

A short silence briefly interrupted the flow of the conversation before William picked up again.

"In retrospect that was a dumb move"

"Yes, it was."

"Anyhow", William said somewhat enthusiastically;

"Yeah?"

"Last night while you were out buying the tents, a sus

figure came up to me"

William expected him to say something before continuing, but Terrence hadn't said anything in a few seconds. So William had decided to continue.

"He asked if you were home; and when I said I didn't know you he told me that you lived here. After that he asked me who I was and I told him to leave, and he did. But before he left he said that I should tell you to meet him and that you knew where."

Terrence, already having finished his sandwich; pondered over the events related to him by William.

"So my question to you is, do you know this guy?" William asked Terrence skeptically. Terrence moved his shoulders briefly up and down, creating the 'I don't know' movement.

"It really depends, I know someone that might be him but its also somewhat unlikely." Terrence replied thoughtfully.

"I see." William said, about to walk away and end the conversation when Terrence continued,

"Can you try to describe him?"

"Not really, he covered his face and most of his appearance with the bushes; plus it was really dark out."

"Did you see his clothing?"

"Most of it yeah. He was wearing some short pants and I couldn't see the shirt because he was wearing a jacket. It seemed to camouflage him into the darkness though, hence why I told him to go away. It was, to say the least, fairly suspicious."

A brief silence was added into the conversation before Terrence replied.

"Now im fairly sure I know who it is."

"Is it the guy you thought might be it?"

"Yeah"

William walked away after saying,

"Anyways Ill be out putting some lanterns on the dark spots outside. If you need anything tell me".

Terrence took out his notebook. He stared at it for a few seconds before opening it and writing an entire paragraph of text.

A mere fifteen minutes pass and Terrence was still erasing and rewriting words on his notebook.

Brian passed by him before turning back; he said

"Hey didn't you promise Jaiden you'd see her today?" Brian asked curiously.

"I told her that it was supposed to be Sunday"

"It is Sunday. Today"

Terrence's eyes slowly widened before he closed his notebook. Sprinting to his room, he grabbed an umbrella (just in case it might've rained) and ran to the door.

He threw the umbrella unto the floor and climbed down the stairs, before crouching to pick up the umbrella.

He passed William sprinting before stopping when he had said

"Going to the mysterious person's house?"

"Actually can you go? I'm sorta on a rush. Ask him what he wants; in the nice kind of way"

"I don't even know where he lives!"

"Go down the alleyway near the exit of the park, the third door to the left with the warning sign on it"

Terrence sprinted away and left the conversation at that, only hearing half of a sentence William had said over the gusts of wind.

Meanwhile William stood on the inner ring of the tree house, incredulous.

"He didn't really mean it did he?" William asked. Within a few seconds Brian made the 'I don't know' movement before saying;

"Pretty sure he did. Ill stay here so we don't have to leave the tree house alone."

William grunted, he stood up and walked away, into the forest of the park. Heading for the exit and struggling to remember the directions Terrence had given him.

Within a few mere minutes, Terrence had reached Jaiden's house. He stopped and gasped for breath before knocking on the door.

In a few seconds Jaiden opened the door.

"Am I late?" Terrence asked after having recovered all of his lost breath.

"By about twenty minutes. Was waiting for you the first fifteen but then I assumed you had forgotten." Jaiden responded truthfully.

"So sorry I was just distracted by other things that have been happening. My mind tends to wander away from remembering stuff like this" Terrence replied.

"Its fine really; still glad you came though. Come on let's talk outside, my dad is sweeping and mopping the floors."

They walked outside and crossed the street before sitting down on one of the benches on the sidewalk.

Just then however, William had reached the door with the warning sign glued on it. William knocked on the door twice and stood back a few steps.

A few seconds passed and no one had opened.

William knocked one more time as hard as he could, and waited a few more seconds.

After a short while the door creaked open, and William walked inside.

Matthew sat on the couch, expecting an explanation as to why Terrence hadn't come.

"Where's Terrence?" Matthew had asked.

"He had to go run an errand. He told me to come here. What is it you wanted to tell him?"

"I won't tell you, it's for him. When he's ready, tell him to come."

"Listen here, he told me to come for you. And I came against my will, if you won't talk to me, then there won't be another chance. So if you don't want to tell me anything; fine but keep in mind that Terrence won't come back here, understood?"

"Sure."

"Ok, good. And now, I'll be leaving."

William stood up and left the room, closing the door as he left. He exited the alleyway and quickly spotted Terrence sitting on a bench talking with Jaiden.

William crossed the street and walked up to Terrence.

"He didn't want to talk. I have to go do an errand now. Be seeing you" William passed besides them and within a few seconds was out of sight.

With that Terrence was left with a looming sense of confusion and the urge to go follow William, in order for him to explain more thoroughly.

Although the situation was unnecessary, Terrence could bargain improvising a bit. Quickly transforming though into words, he said words that would enable action.

"Meet me at the tree house, I better go check on him. Not him, him im talking about him him."

Jaiden replied with a sarcastic but somewhat pleasant, "Wow that really helps me tell the difference"

Terrence rolled his eyes in a kind manner before proceeding to walk towards the alleyway, motioning for Jaiden to go to the tree house, reassuring that he'll get there soon enough.

Jaiden found herself randomly boggling around the forest, looking for anything that might lead to a tree house. Footsteps, trails, noises and scents. She could almost imagine herself being a detective, cracking down a case. Of course, at a much younger age she would enthusiastically accept the position, but now there was little she could do but reject and dismiss it.

Finding a tree house in a forest seemed like it shouldn't take too long, but of course, anyone who has ever tried this will immediately deny the assumption. For all she knew she was going in circles; which didn't seem like the case. After a good few minutes of fumbling around through wildlife and vines, she finally found the all too hidden tree house.

And it wasn't even all that hidden! It had a circle that appeared to have been trimmed, devoid of vegetation, which would in theory make the wooden shelter superbly easy to spot. Easier said than done.

Jaiden sighed, a sigh of relief (and frustration at the fact that she should've probably found this sooner) before she approached the wooden ladder that presumably lead to the upper floor of the tree house (which was a joke in and of itself because tree houses are meant to only have an upper floor). She climbed the ladder which was, altogether longer than anyone could expect, in fact, the tree house wasn't even that high up. Or maybe it felt that way now that she had reached the top of the ladder. Whichever the answer may be, she knocked on the door sharply, three times before patiently waiting for an answer, whether that be a verbal response, the sound of footsteps or perhaps even the creaky sound of a wooden door opening. Within a few seconds the expected footsteps were heard before consequentially the door was opened.

Jaiden was greeted by Brian, Terrence's closest friend.

One, two and a last third knock on the door. Terrence impatiently waited on the small alleyway, leaning on a concrete wall. The door swiftly opened, and Matthew peeked out. One quick gaze after he motioned for Terrence to come in side, and in him doing so, closing the door.

Terrence, delaying his soon-to-come anger; sat down on one of the four chairs that were inside the room. Upon patiently contemplating Matthew sitting down on the couch, he slowly inhaled and exhaled.

"So, what is so urgent that you can't tell anyone else? What happened?" said Terrence, visually and audibly restraining himself.

"I came across something. Something big. . ." Matthew said, remaining purposely vague.

"What's up with the melodrama? Just tell me." Terrence replied, slightly annoyed by the absolute vagueness of what Matthew said.

"I can't. Not here, nor now. Meet me later-

"Wait, no hold that. You can't just leave me hanging, tell me its 'something big' and then be like 'Aight, imma leave you with suspense for the next 5 days'. You tell me now." Terrence interrupted, a sudden stubbornness in his voice.

Matthew sighed, and replied,

"I need space. It's something hard to grasp, I need visualization, if you are to understand what I came upon. The only place where I have a board is my shack. I don't trust going anywhere else. It's the safest place for me to tell you what I am to." Matthew ended.

The next few moments were silence, but a silence they both knew was required for what they each, individually, wanted to achieve. As of Matthew, the silence was for his words to sink in, you're more likely to accept something as fact after thinking about it yourself. Whilst for Terrence, the silence represented something different to what it was supposed to be.

"I can't stand suspense, you know that. You're gonna come with me" Terrence rapidly dispersed the silence with those words, much to Matthew's previous statements.

"I'll say it again, there's no other place I can entrust with telling you this." Matthew replied, dead serious.

"Is this some FBI level stuff or something? Like seriously are Australian CIA agents gonna come rampaging through out door if you tell me this 'big thing'?! Listen, now that you told me you can count it as your mistake, so get ready because you're coming with me to the tree house."

Before Matthew could form a quick response, Terrence angrily stood up and left, leaving the door open and waiting for Matthew on the alleyway that a few minutes earlier he had been waiting in.

Matthew sighed packed his stuff, and prepared to go.

Brian sighed. Terrence was taking way too long, he was starting to get bored. Having nothing better to do, he started writing down on his notebook. Randomly doodling wasn't his strong suit. If there was a strong suit for when you were bored.

This didn't happen to him very often. He usually found something to do during the day. Either he carefully planned what to do earlier, or happened to stumble upon something fun to do.

But 'fun' wasn't something that he and Terrence accomplished very easily. As it turns out, there are a few key factors that they have in common. One of them being a disability to be easily satisfied. They envied people like such, being simply satisfied by the simplest of things. It wasn't in their wishlist to have to be so subconsciously stubborn to satisfaction. They didn't demand that life be so abstract of complicated either, they just simply lacked that ability to be happy with small things such as watching television, or winning a school contest.

The door sharply opening, a sound of delight for Brian, having interrupted his thought process didn't anger him. It seemed Terrence was back, not that a lot would change, but at least now there was space for average conversation.

Terrence walked in, and a stubborn Matthew followed, closing the door after entering.

"We have a visitor" Terrence simply stated, before sighing and sitting down. "This is Matthew, a friend of mine." He continued.

"Is this the guy you go to see?" Brian curiously asked from his chair, at the end of the room.

Terrence nodded. He replied, "Basically he's here to explain something. I don't know what but I hope to find out soon."

Matthew remained silent, contemplating his surroundings. He had never left his house in a long time, except for traveling to his shack.

"Sorry to keep you waiting" Terrence apologetically said. "But now Matthew will say what he wanted to tell me" he finished.

Jaiden sat down, and patiently waited for Matthew to walk up to the white board at the end of the room, not knowing what to expect.

Matthew slowly walked to the board and took out a red marker from his pockets. He sighed, removed all nervousness from his way of speech, and started explaining.

(Warning: A bunch of text incoming. I will try to concise it up in the rewrite of this chapter but if you aren't in the rewrite then please remember that some things are subject to change. Also, I know very little about probability, so please do NOT take this seriously.)

"I hope you know mediocre science and mathematical laws such as Zipf's law. This will be hard to understand if you don't." he started.

After a few seconds he continued, "Let's start with the basic idea. I was thinking one day about Zipf's Law and decided I wanted to make something similar. The premise was, what are the chances of something unlikely to happen during a set timespan. You see, because of entropy, this proved to be an interesting question. It was nothing out of the ordinary, I come across one of these questions every once in a while, but mostly end up with a paradox or a disappointing/unconcise conclusion. Nevertheless, it was interesting to see where this one would go. I continued experimenting, coming across various newspaper articles and information sources, and using what little information they had to my advantage. You must know that I don't have the time nor money to invest in my experiments drastically, these things usually don't cost me anything. I wanted to take a step back at what I was doing, so I took the opportunity to bring my research to my shack. After a few vague weeks of studying, I came across to the final stretch of the experiment. Now, if you haven't yet noticed, im being vague as to what I've been talking about. So, I'll need to explain." He stopped for a few moments, everyone listening, silent. He continued,

"Entropy indicates that everything slowly delves into chaos, disorder. Now, let's say the probability of something happening is 50%. Entropy would say that the probability would slowly rise, the reason for this being that; ok, lets start over. Let's say there's a coin with a 50/50 chance. Entropy would either, a) make the selected probability rise, or b) make the selected probability fall. Either way, one will rise and one will fall. So let's say the probability of a coin being heads rose up to 75%, that's unlikely, it would be the same situation if the coin being tails was 75%, unlikely. Eventually, the probability will rise up to being 100%. Or perhaps 99%, it's a little rough on those edges. Now, let's say something like a meteor falling is 5% chance. Because of this, there is a 95% chance that a meteor does not fall. The chances will rise/fall and eventually, the chance of a meteor will rise up to 90%, and the chances of no meteors will drop to 10%. Now, this means that slowly, everything normal gets weird, and the chances of this happening heighten. To finish, this means that the graphic of how things get worse slowly turns into a high curve. Now, again, this is where it gets tricky."

"You're telling me that NOW it gets tricky?! It was tricky to begin with. Slow down!" Stated Brian, at the end of the room. He was having a hard time understanding what Matthew was talking about.

Matthew sighed, "I said that you needed to understand basic scientific concepts to comprehend."

"Im more lost than Brian is. I don't understand what you're getting at here, this all seems pointless." Terrence spoke up.

Matthew sighed once more; "Im guessing none of you understood and I just wasted my time so far" he said plainly.

"I understand what you mean but don't see what you're getting at." Replied Jaiden.

Matthew continued, " The reason it gets tricky here is because I have the information, but I don't have a causal reason. I found out that, after an undetermined amount of time, the entropy falls into a huge curve. Everything suddenly gets back to normal. And it starts over, though there's a small interval of time in which the entropy is zero, but as soon as it kickstarts, it kicks up again, and it repeats. I, don't understand why though. That's all I've got." Matthew concluded.

"I still don't get it, what's the important revelation" replied Jaiden.

"I thought you had something important to say, I didn't bring you here to give us a science class." Said Terrence disappointedly.

Matthew, for the eleventh time, sighed once more.

"What this means is that, think of something very unlikely, impossible, even." Matthew explained.

"SocksFor1 not uploading a single video one day." Replied Brian.

"A bus flying to outer space" Replied Jaiden.

"Clouds rain tacos" said Terrence.

"Ok, so take all those things, according to this theory, they're all possible." Continued Matthew. "They'll all be possible for a short amount of time, and then stop being so for a while. It's mindblowing. This implies that ANYTHING could be possible. And I don't have any way of knowing what will and won't be possible." Matthew finished.

After this, silence wrapped the room like a neat blanket. Nothing was said, due to the simplicity of something such as information sinking in.

William ran into the building against what the previous signs had informed him on. He didn't give a pickle about the useless signs, conveying information which where both obvious and he already knew. Running past he small office like posts in the station, he stopped at the one with the 'Det. Gushiken' in which Roman was frantically opening cabinets and organizing papers.

Amongst all the heat of the moment, William said,

"I didn't know you were Japanese you know".

Roman briefly peeked before putting a revolver in his pocket before saying, "Glad you came, you took a while" trying to lower the pressure of the moment. He continued, "I hope I see you again, this one's no joke." He ran over to another officer, having a quick interchange and trotting over the William once more.

"You'll be back, don't you worry." Stated William as Roman put his papers onto his cabinet.

"I have to go now, see you." Said Roman before running outside into a police tank-car with bullet-proof armor and hastily leaving.

Terrence thought for a while, as so did everybody else. Was he really implying that anything, actually anything was possible?! If so that's a very boring way to put it. He didn't quite understand exactly what this would entitle, but he had a general idea of weirdness. It was hard to believe nonetheless.

Brian thought about what this implied. Was this the aura William was talking about? How does William even know about the aura anyways? Perhaps this was the reason that he had that aura. Maybe the aura had something to do with this theory. If so, does this mean that the aura will eventually leave? It's all so blurry from here...

Jaiden understood what he meant. If the theory was true it would imply that anything fiction could be real, and it was all up to chance. There were some rough edges on his theory, and theories aren't supposed to have rough edges so perhaps the theory was wrong. It could also be a lack of general information, he did mention that sources were rather difficult to come by. Either way it was a relevant thing to discuss.

All the silence was then interrupted by a obnoxiously loud knock on the wooden door. Terrence, the first to stand up, opened the door to see William.

"Roman left to a case, a very important one" William said.

"What is it?" Replied Brian.

"I don't know, but a few cops already died, and all cops are being called to the area, so whatever it is, it must be important." William replied plainly.

"And we're coming to help" he finished, pointing at him and Brian.
