Chapter 8

"Oh my god!" Donghyuck whispered one night, a total of an entire week having passed since Jeno first started bumping into Jaemin at weird timings. "I just realized something!"

"What?" Renjun asked, looking up from his paper where he was drawing a variety of little birds. "If it’s something stupid I swear I’ll-"

"This is an all boys school, isn't it?!"

Renjun picked up one of his erasers, throwing it at Donghyuck who glared at him.

"It's been two months since we've been here AND YOU JUST REALIZED THAT?!"

"Well I'm sorry for being slow!"

"No, it's you being STUPID!"

Dongyuck jumped up from his bed, ready to get into a full on argument with Renjun when the door suddenly opened, showing Jeno.

An angel in disguise, really.

"No time for arguments!" Jeno announced, grabbing his cousin and Renjun, "Jaemin has done something different today and is now walking around which means we have to 'accidentally' bump into him if it comes down to it."

With no room for complaining, the two followed behind Jeno. Renjun didn't forget his camera and off they went to find Jaemin.

It was a bit chilly in the halls. The place nearly deserted as it neared closer to the curfew time. As they had done the first day they were there, Donghyuck and Jeno snuck around as carefully as possible while Renjun walked as if he hadn't a care in the world. ‘Fuck authority’ was his mindset.

"So where are we going?" Renjun asked, walking past one of the teachers' offices that had the light on.

"Shut up!" Donghyuck whisper screamed. "Imagine if Ms Kim heard us?!"

"But she didn't," Renjun sassed back, blowing a bubble with a piece of chewing gum, the two cousins wondering where he got it from. "You still haven't answered me."

"To be honest, I don't even know but I saw him head up a set of stairs and there was no way I was going alone so you guys had to come along," Jeno explained, running in front of Renjun to take the lead.

"I fucking hate dark staircases. They give me war flashbacks of when my brothers used to scare me in the middle of the night when all I wanted was a piece of cheese," Renjun said with a sigh, grabbing onto Jeno's arm for 'protection'.

"Oh my god," Donghyuck whispered. "Why does it feel like you two are dating?"

"And if we were, it'd be none of your concern," Jeno replied while Renjun stuck his tongue out at his best friend and laughed.

Renjun didn't let go of Jeno's arm, quietly following beside as they ascended a set of staircases that led up to an old and creaky door.

It was cold and dusty, their comfortable pyjamas hardly blocking out the stale air that circulated right outside the door. It was as if it was a scene for a horror movie and the three slightly shuddered, pushing the door open cautiously.

"God damn, we might be trespassing," Donghyuck said, being the first to walk into the room with his arms akimbo.

Jeno and Renjun snickered at him and walked in, Renjun still gripping onto Jeno tightly.

"Now where could he possibly be?" Jeno asked as they walked through shelves filled with books.

"When did this place even get here?" Renjun asked, his eyes sparkling when he saw all the books based on drawing.

Jeno shrugged, pulling Renjun along as they looked for Jaemin before the short male would get sidetracked by artsy things. The books on the shelves were covered in a thin layer of dust, showing that the small library was used but not as frequently as it probably should have.

They walked quietly, not wanting Jaemin to hear them nor wanting their actions to be discovered as they were supposed to be in bed within five minutes.

"Damn, I thought he kept the rules. He's a bit naughty to be out of bed when curfew is in a few minutes," Donghyuck commented as they walked towards the very back of the average sized room.

Jeno was just about to reply when he stopped midway, spotting a figure, who so happened to be Jaemin, sitting on the floor in the very corner of the room. A large stack of books beside him as he used the light of a glow in the dark to read. On one side a large shelf stood and on the other, the wall.

The three tiptoed down the other side of the shelf and got down flat on the ground, carefully pushing away the books from the lowest shelf to see if they could figure out what Jaemin was reading. Luckily, the focused male didn’t see the movements of the books on the shelf and so they squinted in the dark to see the words.

Not much could be seen, only blurred words that were hard to make out since it was quite dark and not to mention that even at their semi-close proximity, it was still too far to see what was on the books. All they could do was lay there and watch his hands flip pages and the weakness of the dim glow in the dark shining in the one concentrated area.

It wasn’t long. Not in the slightest bit were they there for an extended amount of time when Jaemin suddenly stood up from the ground, startling the three and causing them to hold in their gasps of surprise.

"Oh dear! It's two minutes until curfew!" Jaemin exclaimed to himself, hastily pushing the books further into a corner before sprinting down the aisle and out the room. The three who still lay motionless on the ground were a bit shook by the sudden action and slowly exhaled the breath they didn't realize they were holding.

"It seems as if he isn't as naughty as I thought," Donghyuck finally said, pushing himself from off the floor. "Now we can see what he was really reading."

Renjun followed behind Donghyuck as they walked towards the other aisle, Jeno silently watching his cousin and friend walk away.

"Renjun is much more prettier than I ever realized," Jeno thought to himself, unsure whether his feelings were trying to mess with him at such a random time or if he really was suddenly struck with infatuation for the slightly older male. "Whatever, I’ll figure it out later."

"Oh dear Hesus, it's all religious shit," Renjun sighed, flicking through random pages as he used the light from the moon that shone through a small window.

They continued scanning through books, Renjun having the idea to take a picture to simply use the flash so they could examine them on the small screen but it turned out that all of them were based on Christianity. It wasn’t interesting in the least until suddenly, Jeno realized something was different about all of them.

Of course, they were all based on Christianity but they weren't the average books. They contained in depth explanations of verses that continuously made people confused or seemed to have double meaning. Verses that caused people to believe in the way Jaemin did. The way that there would be favouritism and hate.

"Look," Jeno said as he stopped on a page in a rather stereotypical religious looking book.

"What? Talking about his Lord and his great deeds?" Donghyuck asked sarcastically, Renjun snickering quietly.

"Nope! It's actually talking about mistranslations and about his god loving everyone equally no matter what," Jeno explained, skimming through the page.

"Oh? So hes finally starting to realize how bigoted he is?" Renjun asked, leaning over and resting his chin on Jeno's shoulder as they examined more books together.

Now that they had finally come to a conclusion on what Jaemin had been doing, they flipped through the books and filtered them, only leaving the ones that they thought had the most accurate explanations and translations for him to come back to and read.

Couldn't leave the biased ones now, could they?

"I have nothing against Christian boys or Christians in general but Christians like Jaemin just don't sit right with me," Donghyuck explained with a sigh, running a hand through his chestnut hair. "Now all I want is a Mark Lee. He seems nice enough."

Renjun punched his best friend's shoulder, rolling his eyes.

"You're literally the only one focusing on getting a relationship. If Jeno here said he wanted one, then I’d figure your family is just a bunch of horny fucks."

Jeno scoffed and slapped Renjun's shoulder lightly with a small smile. How would he tell his friend that he was beginning to question his feelings as well and that it was directed at someone they all knew?

Of course, he would never expose himself so early in questioning himself and decided he would just wait and see if Renjun was the subject of a small crush or one that would be a much more permanent problem.

"We already figured out what we're here for so let's get going," Jeno said, grabbing both Donghyuck and Renjun's hands to pull them along.

"Wait! I saw a staircase thing in the corner when we first got here," Donghyuck said, walking towards a corner where, sure enough, a spiral staircase led upwards to a small hatch.

"Bitch have you never heard of horror movies or whatever?" Renjun asked, holding Donghyuck in place. "What if there's like some weird shit up there and we get possessed?"

"What are you on? Why would a school have those kinds of things?" Donghyuck asked with a disgusted face at the suggestions

"Don't ask me!" Renjun whined, looking at Jeno with a puppy face. "Jeno please stop him! I’m dropping my pride right now to beg and to do this!"

Jeno wanted to laugh. He really did but the begging face of the older male was too adorable and he couldn't resist. Letting out a sigh, he glared at Donghyuck and pulled Renjun close to him.

"Okay, Hyuck, we're going back now. We can't let Renjun pass out right here."

"Ew. Simp," Donghyuck muttered, pushing past the two and out the library. "If this is what I'll be witnessing trying to get up those stairs, I'd rather get to sleep."

Renjun stuck out his tongue childishly, laughing at Donghyuck as he allowed Jeno's arm to wrap around him comfortably. He wouldn't mind looking up those stairs during a daylight hour but now, after curfew and in the fucking dark? Hell no.
