The Pious Thieves

"Here's the blue prints for the bank," Harriet said. I looked at the paper on the table as they explained the plan for getting into the bank.

"Mattie," Meyer said. "You're sitting this one out."

"No I'm not," I said.

"Tilly," my mother said.

"Why can't I help?" I asked.

"Your specific talents aren't needed," Roxy said.

I was growing increasingly frustrated with all of them. I knew I was a linguist but I was still an important part of this team. Yes, my talents were best suited for interrogations, but I still wanted to be there.

We had two matching keys for a safe deposit box in this bank, coincidentally run by Germans. We needed to break in to get to the room with the deposit box. My parents had gone in yesterday and the deposit box we're looking for wasn't in the main room.

"Meyer?" I asked.

"Mattie, it's too dangerous for you," Joe said.

"But not for Jonah?" I asked.

"What the fuck Mattie?" Jonah snapped at me.

"I'm going for a walk," I said. "My talents obviously aren't required currently."

I stood up and walked out despite my mother scolding me in German. I walked out of the house and sat down just outside the door. I was hidden from the street by Meyer's car, so when my eyes began to water I didn't care.

"Mattie," Jonah said as the door opened. I wiped my eyes quickly, refusing to look at him. He sat down next to me.

"I didn't mean to upset you. I'm just over getting treated like a child. They're letting you be a part of this one but say it's too dangerous for me," I said.

"I know you're frustrated."

"I'm more than frustrated," I said, looking over at him finally.

"I can't pretend to know what you're feeling, but I know how important the Hunt is to you," he said. "Look, if you want me to sit this one out."

"Never," I said. "You've been getting your ass kicked everyday by Joe. You're ready to step up and take your role here."

"He has been kicking my ass," he said chuckling. I smiled a little at him.

"Jonah, please promise me something," I said.

"Depends on what it is," he said, leaning into me a bit.

"Please just no matter how angry I get with the team, don't let me quit. And no quitting yourself. That means that you can't offer to sit something out for me. Okay? I need you to promise me that you will stay focused on the Hunt," I said.

"I promise to stay focused on the Hunt and to not quit and to not let you quit even when you're frustrated with the team," Jonah said. "No melodramatic quitting on my watch."

"Thanks Jonah," I said, leaning onto his shoulder. His arm wrapped around me and we were quiet for a few minutes.

"For what it's worth," Jonah said. "They just want to protect you. Your safety is all anyone on this team wants doll."

I smiled softly as Lonny opened the door.

"They figured you wouldn't kill me," he said as he stepped out.

"They want us back?" Jonah asked.

"Yeah," he said. "I'll tell them you needed a few more minutes."

Jonah thanked him before the door shut again.

"Mattie," Jonah said. I turned a little to look at him and he pressed his lips to mine quickly.

"Shit Jonah, what the fuck?" I asked, pulling away.

"I'm sorry. I thought we felt the same way about one another," he said.

"We do," I said.

"So what is wrong?" He asked.

"We can't do this, Jonah. You need to focus on training. We both have the Hunt," I said. "This job. It requires our undevided attention always. One slip up and we could both be dead."

"What you said the other day to Harriet about your parents love getting them through the camps," he said.

"I believe that Jonah, but I still think jumping into a relationship now is not what we should be doing. We need to focus on that two week deadline," I said.

"And after that?"

"We'll re-evaluate," I said.

"Such a strategist," he said while chuckling a little.

"We really should get back inside," I said, standing up and dragging Jonah to his feet.

The following night, I was staying at Meyer's, going through files in the Ark while everyone else was out breaking into a bank. I didn't want to be here, but my parents didn't want me home alone. At least here there were armed guards to protect me.

I was stressed about the situation because I knew about the armed guards and I didn't want anyone shot. The fact that this was Jonah's first mission where he was given a gun wasn't helping my nerves any either.

When they all returned, I was instantly filled in on everything.

"And boy wonder here found a secret vault full of precious jewelry and paintings, all sorts of expensive things that had been taken from the Jews going into camps," Lonny said.

"I told you your brain is a valuable asset," I said, smiling at Jonah. "Good job. I'm proud of you."

"Thanks," he said, smiling at me. I returned the smile before my parents decided it was time to leave. I agreed, following them out of the building.

"Wait Mattie, can I have a minute?" Jonah asked, running up to us as I was about to get in the car.

"Make it quick," my father said.

"Thank you Murray," Jonah said.

I shut the door a little as I turned to Jonah.

"First," he said." I found letters that my Safta wrote. She was in love with Meyer when they were in Auschwitz."

"A lot of Jews who survived the camp fell in love. Tragedy and danger can create bonds like no other."

"Secondly, thank you," he said, hugging me quickly.

"You're welcome," I said, returning the hug.

"For believing in me when no one else did. And for being proud of me. They were all upset that I wanted to return the stolen items to the owners."

"One day we'll get to. That's why we hunt."
