The Great Ole Nazi Cookout of '77

"So, we know that we have to destroy their supply that's coming in tonight," Joe said.

"So, what do we do?" Jonah asked. Harriet and Lonny were currently driving back from New Jersey after casing the place. Hopefully they'd have something helpful.

"Wouldn't it be easier to wait for the other two?" I asked.

"You have a great point Mattie," Roxy said. We'd been able to get her back in the game after Joe saved her and her daughter's life.

"Let's break for lunch and reconvene in a couple hours," Meyer said.

"Mamme, what do you want for lunch?" I asked. She'd been getting better as time progressed, but it was obviously still very difficult for her to be here without my father. She says that she saw him one night and that he was with Aaron and she got to see her young son as well. I was truly happy for her, especially since her demeanor has increased tenfold since then.

"Jonah," she called without answering me. He looked over at us and smiled.

"Yes ma'am," he said, walking over to us.

"Tilly and I were just headed down the road to a nice little deli that Murray and I used to go to all the time. Lunch is on me if you'd like," she said.

"I have to go finish up a conversation with Meyer, but if you wish to wait a few minutes then I'd love to join you," he said.

"Of course sweetie," she said. He walked away quickly, obviously trying to keep my mother happy.

"Mamme," I said.

"Tilly, I'm just trying to help you out dear. Besides, where else are you going to find a man that your Tate already approved?"

"Point taken Mamme," I said.

Within a few minutes Jonah had joined us and we were walking down the street to the deli. As we walked, several people from the synagogue stopped my mother and I to tell us how sorry they were for our loss. It's been just over a week, so it's still very fresh to us both. That's part of the reason why this lunch place surprised me so much.

When we arrived, we ordered before taking seats at a small table. My mother sat on one side and Jonah and I sat on the other. Within seconds Jonah had his arms around my shoulders and was chatting away with my mother.

"You remind me so much of my Murray when he was young," she said before jumping into a story about my father from before the camps.

"Mamme," I said softly when she finished. "Have you ever wanted to go back? Just to see Germany again?"

"I've thought about it. Your father always thought it'd be too painful," she said. "I still think I'd like to go while I have the chance. Things are so different."

"I know Mamme," I said. The man working called our order and Jonah jumped up to grab the tray.

"I think you two ought to see Germany," my mother said once we all had our food and had begun eating.

"You think what?" Jonah asked.

"Yes of course," my mother said. "We should all go to Germany together one day."

"Maybe Mamme," I said. She took that as enough of an answer and changed the subject as we ate.

After we finished, we decided we should probably head back to the Ark. As we walked, Jonah slid his hand into mine and smiled down at me softly. My cheeks heated up slightly at his actions, causing me to become embarrassed with myself for being so soft.

I am a Nazi Hunter. I shouldn't be soft towards anyone, but Jonah is special. He is the single greatest thing to happen to me. He's been my rock recently. When we told him about the Hunt he jumped right in, not at all deterred by the fact that I am a Nazi Hunter.

I smiled a little as I thought of all the great things about Jonah.

"Mamme," I said to gain my mother's attention. "How do you know you're in love?" I asked in German. I couldn't have Jonah knowing what was going on.

"You very obviously are Mammele," she replied in English.

"What did you ask?" Jonah questioned as we reached Meyer's house.

"I'm heading upstairs. I'm sure you two need to talk," my mother said before walking away.

"What did you ask?" Jonah asked. "Cause I'm a little worried here."

"What do you think I asked?" I responded.

"I don't know but I'd like to," he said.

"I asked her how you know you're in love," I said softly.

"I love you too Matilda," he said, cracking a smile as he used my full name.

"Jonah," I whined. "Not Matilda. Please."

"I love you Mattie," he said.

"I love you too," I said, leaning up to kiss his lips quickly.

"Alright lovebirds. I get that you just declared your love for one another and all but we have a Fourth Reich to destroy," Lonny said, sticking his head out the door.

"You sick of having to come find us yet?" Jonah asked as we followed Lonny towards the Ark.

"Honestly not really. What I wouldn't give to be young and in love," Lonny joked. I giggled softly at him.

"I have found the lovebirds. They have been returned safely to the nest," Lonny said as we entered the Ark.

"It's about damn time," Joe said. Everyone was here, including someone they kidnapped. This was a great start to the mission.

"Tonight," Meyer said before going over the plan.

"I'm going with my mother to help run coms," I said, refusing to accept that Meyer was trying to keep me in the Ark yet again.

"Your staying here Mattie," Meyer said again.

"No Meyer. I'm not," I said. "I can't do any good here. I'm going to help run coms from the van."

"All in favor?" Meyer asked and everyone raised their hand except for him.

"Fine. You will help your mother run communications."

We spent the rest of the afternoon preparing for tonight.

The evening was going exactly how it was supposed to. Lonny was in. Jonah was in. Roxy was deflating tires with Joe's help. Harriet was on top of a neighboring building running surveillance. My mother and I were in the back of the van running coms while Meyer sat in the front doing nothing. He was  apparently the driver which meant he got to sit in the drivers seat of the van and do nothing while
Jonah and Lonny risked their lives for this.

At one point, things started to go south and we lost our coms, triggering Joe to make an entrance so he could save Lonny and Jonah. Everything started going crazy a few moments later. Several bombs started going off inside the building and there was a lot of fire. We tried to fix the coms but the error wasn't on our end. Something was messing with the transmission.

"Tilly, there's nothing we can do but pray," my mother said, so we started praying. We prayed quietly as we continued to try to figure out how to get the coms back up.

"Get back to the Ark. I'll meet you there," Meyer said, jumping out of the van. Great now Joe or Lonny needs to get their ass back here and drive us back. Both of them, Jonah and Roxy were supposed to be in the van anyways.

Our coms stayed down until we were all piled in the van again.

"Are you okay?" I asked Jonah as we sat on the floor in the back of the van on the way back to the city.

"Yeah," he said. "I'm fine."

"I'll take it for now," I said. "Everyone else okay?"

"Can you die of an adrenaline rush?" Lonny asked.

"You are in the wrong line of work if that's what's going to kill you man," Jonah said.

"It is possible though. With some medical conditions," I said.

"Very funny, Mattie," Lonny said. Joe was driving and my mother was in the passenger seat. Roxy was sitting on the floor closest to Joe, her head leaning on the back of his seat. Something more was going on there.

When we reached the city again, it was nearing two in the morning. Joe drove us around in the van, dropping everyone at their respective houses.

"Jonah, are you staying tonight?" My mother asked as Joe turned down our street.

"If you'd like ma'am," he said.

"At least come get some food," she said.

"That I won't turn down," he said. Joe pulled up to the house and we all got out, heading inside.

"I'm going to heat up some soup and make some tea," my mother said.

"Will you get me some of the same? I'm going to go make the couch up for Jonah," I said.

"Of course," she said. I headed off, making quick work of making the bed.

When I returned, Jonah was sitting at the table, listening as my mother told him a story about my father before the camps. She loved to tell stories about my father before he passed away, but now it was part of keeping his memory alive.

"There you are," my mother said as I sat down at the table next to Jonah.

"Here I am," I said. My mother started to ladle bowls of soup for us and handed us each one before getting her own.

"Tea?" She asked.

"Yes please," I said. She handed me a mug and I thanked her quickly.

"No thank you ma'am," Jonah said. We all began eating and talking quietly.

I could tell something was bothering Jonah but he was trying to put on this facade that he was fine. I knew better though.

When we had finished, I offered to clean up so my mother could head to bed. She was beyond grateful and took me up on the offer instantly.

"You can go to sleep if you want," I said, starting to clean the dishes.

"Do you need help?" He asked.

"I'll wash, you dry," I said, handing him a towel.

After a few minutes of silence he started talking.

"Mattie, I could've killed him. He killed your father, injured both of us and Lonny. He was on his knees with my gun aimed directly at his forehead. I could've killed him and I didn't."

"Why's this upsetting you Jonah?"

"I could've taken him out of this world. There would've been one less monster for us to have to worry about. Instead I let some FBI agent talk me down and take him into custody."

"Jonah, maybe it's a good thing you didn't kill him."

It was silent for a few minutes as we finished up the dishes.

"It was a test and I failed."

"No Jonah. You passed. You're not a monster. You aren't capable of the terrible things he is. You don't want to play judge, jury, and executioner."

"You haven't seen me interrogate someone," he said.

"I've seen you though Jonah. The real you. The you that still calls my mother ma'am. The you that was so desperate to impress my parents and obviously still is even though he has their approval. I've seen you grieve two of the greatest people in your life in a matter of weeks Jonah, all while finding out about Nazi Hunters in 1977 in New York City. I've seen you face hell and come back Jonah. I've seen the real you and I love you."

"I love you too Mattie. Thank you," he said, kissing my lips quickly before pulling me into a hug.

"You're welcome. I think maybe you need some sleep. What do you think?"

"That would probably be good. I'll make sure to say goodbye before I head off to Meyer's tomorrow. There's another Nazi I need to find."

"So he told you about the Wolf," I said.

"Yeah, and everything that bastard did to him and my Safta."

"It can wait until you get some rest Jonah. Goodnight." I kissed him once more before heading up to my bedroom.
