At Night, All Birds are Black
As my sisters wedding approached, the team was taking a back burner in all our lives. Yes, we should've been more focused on the impending deadline that was rapidly approaching, but we were more worried about my sister's wedding.
With half the team in Alabama, that half including Jonah, there wasn't much we could do anyways. Jonah, Joe, and Harriet were crashing a Nazi's Fourth of July barbecue. I guess there were Nazi scientists working at NASA or something and that's why they had to go to clear to Alabama for the weekend. Whatever the reason, I was not happy that I didn't know what was going on with them. I needed to know they were okay.
The other half of the team was closer to home going after Tilda, a Nazi propaganda film director who now worked in the US as a political consultant. Roxy, Lonny, and Meyer were working on getting intel out of her. I had a feeling it wouldn't go well.
My mother was completely occupied with the wedding, and my father was as well. I did what I could to help them, which wasn't much.
"I know you're worried about him, mammele," my mother said. "But Joe and Harriet are there with him."
"If she isn't careful we'll be planning her wedding next," my sister joked.
"No no no mammele," my father said. "She's much too young to get married."
"Jonah is a good Jewish boy though," she said, teasing me.
"There is nothing going on with Jonah and I," I said, blushing more as they teased me.
"Lonny told me the two of you kissed," my mother said.
"What?" I asked.
"When you stormed out the other day," she said.
"And we were sitting outside of Meyer's house. I told him that wasn't a good idea. That a relationship right now wasn't a good idea, so for now we are just friends," I explained.
"You think too much with your head mammele," my mother said. I smiled at her a little, and she hugged me from behind.
"No man will ever marry you like that my sweet little sister," my sister said.
"Ah ah ah," my father said.
"Tate, please don't," I said, giggling at him.
"Jonah Heidelbaum," he said laughing at me.
"Matilda Heidelbaum, it has a nice ring," my sister said.
"Stop," I protested as I giggled at their antics.
That night I went to bed fairly late since it was one of my sisters last nights with us. She'd been away for a while and come back to stay with us until the wedding when she would move in with her husband, a nice Jewish man who made a decent living as a lawyer.
A few days later, a knock on the door interrupted our work on my sister's dress. My father answered it, stepping aside to let Jonah into the house.
"You're back," I said, going over and hugging him tightly.
"Yeah, can we talk alone somewhere?" He asked. I nodded, leading him up to my bedroom.
"Can't close the door but they aren't paying attention to us," I said.
"Harriet up and left us. Joe and I had to hop on a plane to get home," he explained.
"What the fuck?" I asked.
"We don't know," he said. I hugged him again, holding him longer this time.
"I'm so happy you're okay," I said.
"I'm okay Mattie," he said, tightening the hug a little before releasing me.
"Jonah, Lonny saw us kiss and my parents know. I explained it all but you should know," I said. He nodded a little, sitting down on the edge of my bed.
"Thanks for telling me," he said. "Do, um, do you regret it?"
"No," I answered. "I do not. However, I currently need to focus on my sister's wedding."
"About that," he said. "What's this about my Safta giving a speech?"
"Yeah, she was scheduled to," I said.
"Joe said something," he said. "On the flight. She confided in him that she didn't know what young kids wanted to hear about but she was sure it wasn't her shitty life."
"Her life was terrible, but not shitty. She was dealt a rotten hand Jonah, but she loved her life. Especially once you were born."
"She tell you that?" He asked, looking up at me expectantly.
"It was obvious," I said. "You were the light of her life."
He smiled at that, earning a smile from me.
"So if you still need someone to fill that slot," he said, leaving the statement at that.
"Let's go talk to my family," I said.
"They scare me," he said. I giggled at him as I grabbed his hand and dragged him towards the stairs.
"They aren't scary," I said.
"Mamme, Tate," I said as I walked into the kitchen with Jonah in tow.
"Mammele, Jonah," my mother said. "Can I get you anything?"
"Uh, no thank you ma'am," he said.
"He actually has something he wanted to offer," I said.
They looked at each other nervously.
"Joe let it slip that my Safta was supposed to give a speech at the wedding. Since she passed away, I was going to offer to give the speech in her place," Jonah said, looking down out of nerves.
"Mammele," my father said, looking at my sister.
"I'd appreciate it," she said.
"I'd be more than willing," he said.
"Thank you Jonah," she said, looking between Jonah and I. She cracked a smile and I rolled my eyes at her.
"We have to meet in the Ark," Jonah said.
"You have to meet in the Ark," I said. "We are all off until after the wedding."
"I'll see you soon," Jonah said.
"I'll walk you out," I said, leading him to the door. I shut the door behind us and Jonah paused to say goodbye.
"I'll see you at the wedding," I said.
"I look forward to it," he said, smirking at me before walking away.
