16 Everything we need
Amy POV
I had just finished getting dressed when the doorbell rang. Mom was right on time, as always. I opened the door and beamed at her.
"Hi Mom!" I said as she came in to give me a hug.
"Hi honey! How are you doing today? And how is the little man?" she asked, looking at me closely.
"We're doing fine. But he never gets enough to eat. I'll get my water bottle and then we can be on our way." I replied and slowly made my way to the kitchen while Mom attended to the dogs. As always, they both enjoyed the extra attention.
"And how is Kyle? Has he left already?" I heard her call out.
"Yes. He left for the airport about 15 minutes ago. If everything works out he'll be home tomorrow morning. It's a shame that I'm not supposed to fly anymore. But at least I can do my work from home," I explained as I walked back into the living room.
"Oh too bad, I was hoping to still be able to see him. How far is the nursery?" Mom wanted to know as she headed off in the direction of the room without waiting for my answer.
"It's done. That was quite a hassle. The crib alone took 2 hours to set up, thanks to faulty instructions," I replied as I followed her.
She entered the room and I immediately saw her start to smile. It seemed that we had done a good job. Because it was always very easy to see if she liked something or not. It was the same now. Her face was like an open book. Her feelings were written all over her face. Therefore, I knew that we had done a great job.
"Oh Amy! I'm thrilled! I'm sure the little prince will love it!" she said.
"I hope so!" I laughed.
We then headed to the mall to finally tackle the real task of the day. Kyle and I had put together a list of things last night out of items that other parents recommended. That was the good thing about the internet. It was easy to read up on forums about what we needed for our little guy and what might be unnecessary.
Although Mom claimed to have no idea about baby stuff, she had good arguments for some things I hadn't thought about. I was so grateful to have this woman in my life. She and Dad, along with Kyle, were my rock. I knew I could always count on them. And even though I wasn't their biological child, they never let me feel it. For the two of them I had been a dream child.
It took a few hours until we finally had everything we needed. Well, plus a few extra things. Mom already couldn't resist spoiling her grandson. The car was full to the brim. So we decided to grab a quick bite to eat and then head home. Slowly I was also pretty exhausted and my feet would thank me for some rest.
"I'm going to the ladies' room real quick," I said to Mom.
"Okay. I'll go ahead to the car." she replied.
I made my way to the restrooms. But suddenly I had the feeling I was being watched. I looked around but saw nothing out of the ordinary. I was probably just imagining it. After all, I felt like that all day long. It was probably because Kyle was always there to look after me. Now that he wasn't around, it made me a little paranoid.
Whatever it was, I was sure there was nothing to worry about.
