Dan cleared his throat and stood up. "Let's carry on."
Phil stared at him. "What?"
"Carry on with the piano."
Phil stood up a little too quickly. "Of course."
When they sat down, Dan moved his stool as far away from Phil's as possible. He didn't suggest any more teaching methods that involved any kind of hand touching.
Phil had never felt more uncomfortable. He was almost glad when half past five rolled around and Dan had to leave.
"You learnt quite a bit Phil," Dan said as he pulled his shoes on. "Keep practising."
Phil nodded miserably.
When Dan left, closing the door a little too hard behind him, Phil sloped upstairs to his bedroom and sank onto a beanbag in the corner.
"Phil?" someone called.
"What?" he yelled back.
"What's wrong?" The voice was closer now, coming from just outside his bedroom.
"What do you care?"
The door opened and Phil's older brother Martyn walked in. "I care because when you're annoyed you walk around the house slamming doors, and I can't deal with that."
"Why not?"
"Phil, just tell me what's wrong and then I can leave."
Phil sighed. "There's this guy called Dan who I like and I was friends with and then I found out he was gay and I thought he liked me so I kissed him and now I don't think he likes me."
Martyn smiled sympathetically. "Is he the guy you were with after school?"
"What?"
"I was here, you know. I saw you coming in with him."
"What?"
"You sound like a stuck record. I was in the house, Phil. I saw you entering the house. Get it?"
"I forgot you were here," Phil mumbled.
"Right. Thanks. Well, I saw you two coming in. That was Dan, right?"
"Yeah, but-"
"Well, I'm a good judge of this kind of thing, and you should be too, what with us being Masters at it, and I think he likes you."
Phil stared at Martyn. "You're a genius!"
"What?"
"I forgot I'm a Master at this stuff! I wasn't wrong! I knew it!"
"How the hell did you forget?"
"Because he was teaching me piano. I didn't feel like a Master."
Martyn looked confused. "Teachi- you know what, never mind. You should probably fix this."
"I should."
There was a pause.
"How exactly do you suggest I fix it?"
Martyn rolled his eyes. "Talk to him in piano tomorrow. He likes you. You like him. It can't go wrong."
Phil laughed giddily. "You're right! Thanks Martyn! You're a genius!"
Martyn stood up to leave, but was stopped by Phil throwing his arms around his waist and hugging him tightly.
"I need to go," Phil said, letting go of him.
"Go where?"
Martyn's question was drowned out by the sound of Phil sprinting down the stairs.
"Where are you going?" Martyn yelled, following Phil and looking over the banister.
"Dan's! Obviously! Where else?"
"I don't think that's a good-"
The door slammed behind Phil and Martyn groaned. "Don't expect me to help you when this goes wrong!" he shouted to no one in particular.
Phil ran down the street. He had a vague inkling of where Dan lived, and as he approached the area he could see houses which looked like Dan had described. Small, and inexpensive.
Phil caught a glimpse of a boy drawing the curtains of his room. He squinted. The boy looked a lot like Dan.
Steadying himself, he marched up to the door and rang the doorbell.
A shadow approached. He could see it through the cracked glass.
"H- oh."
"Dan, I-" Phil began.
"Phil, this isn't the time. Say what you have to and then leave."
Phil sighed. "I just wanted to say, I'm sorry about what happened earlier. It was a mistake, and I hope it doesn't affect our friendship."
Dan's shoulders sagged slightly at the word 'mistake', but Phil didn't notice.
"I guess so."
Phil's face broke into a huge smile. "Thanks, Dan. See you tomorrow in piano, right?"
Dan paused. "What?"
"Piano."
"How do you know I have piano tomorrow?"
"Oh, sweetie, it's taken you a while to notice, hasn't it? I charmed the receptionist into giving me your timetable. That's how PJ has the same badminton lessons as you."
Dan stared. "Shit, you're good."
