Dan had always been different. He'd known that from a very early age. Ever since he was three, and he couldn't play Mozart on the piano, he'd been looked at differently. Parents tried to stop their children going near him, and if anyone addressed a single word to him, sometimes others would look at them with disgust.
Even his parents thought he was odd. Anyone over the age of sixteen was part of the 'Old Generation' of Non-Masters, so Dan's parents weren't Masters, but they'd been expecting their son to be one. They'd been so excited when Dan was preparing to give his first speech, at the age of two and a half years.
Needless to say, that speech didn't go well.
Dan was a disappointment to them. Not like his younger brother, Marcus, who hadn't had any of the problems that Dan did. He was a Master too, just like everybody else. Dan found himself wishing sometimes that Marcus wasn't like everybody else, just so that he wasn't alone.
When he was fifteen, his parents had sat down with him, and said,
"Now, Dan. You're different to other children."
He'd scowled at them, and tried to leave, but they'd stopped him.
"You're different to other children, and that's alright."
Dan had laughed bitterly. "Well, no one else sees it like that."
They'd carried on talking like he hasn't spoken. "You'll be starting secondary school soon. A lovely private school, very expensive, very prestigious. You know, where Marcus goes."
Dan's eyes had widened. "What?"
"Now, I know it'll be a big jump from home schooling, but we think it's best if you mix with other children. They might be able to teach you something."
Dan had begged them to reconsider, but they ignored him.
"You should have started years ago, but we wanted to keep you at home until you were mature enough to deal with things on your own."
Dan had screamed at them and stormed out. It hadn't changed anything.
Dan didn't know how he'd cope in school. Education, because everyone already knew everything, was more about helping children discover everything they could do. But because Dan couldn't do anything, he wouldn't be able to keep up with anyone.
How could someone who had to learn things ever compare to others, who were instant masters at everything they tried?
