▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
JAYMES WOULD'VE RATHER STUCK HER HAND INTO A GARBAGE DISPOSAL THAN TAKE THE FENCING CLASS THAT THE SCHOOL OFFERED.
Her relief was immense when she was informed that she could take a specialized class for her specific ablities. Telekinesis 101, was what they called it, and it just so happened to be at seven in the morning. This eliminated Jaymes' free period immedinatly after breakfast, thus also eliminating her good mood.
The classroom was fairly easy to find, only a couple hallways down from the caffeteria, which Jaymes had just come from, her morning coffee still in her hand, and her eyes still aching from the typical rough night she had.
To her annoyance and her suprise, the room was not only empty of any furniture, it was also void of all students. She groaned, wondering why she had been in such a rush to get out of breakfast to go to a stupid class about something that she, for the most part, already knew how to do.
She let her bag fall to the floor, pressing her back against the wall, slumping against it for support. She took a long swig from her coffee, sighing as she stared at the early number on the wall clock.
Just then, the door creaked open, and someone else stepped inside.
"Hi." Jaymes awkwardly sighed, approching the newcomer. "Is this the telekinesis class?"
"Yeah." He nodded quickly, furrowing his brow and peering down at her through his glasses. "Are you new? I don't-"
"Yes." She cut him off, already growing tired of the new girl shtick. "Sorry. That was rude. It's early. I'm tired."
"I can see that." Immediately when the words left his mouth, his eyes shot open in shock. "Oh God, t-that was rude. I didn't mean that-"
"I guess neither of us are morning people, huh?" Jaymes scoffed.
"Guess not." He chuckled at this.
She waited for him to finish setting his bag on the floor, then she held her hand out to him, feeling like that was the proper thing to do. "I'm Jaymes."
He stared at her open palm for a moment, puzzled, but he caught on eventually and shook her hand. "Rowan."
Jaymes pulled her hand away, glancing at the clock again, reading 7:02. "Is there anyone else in this class?"
"There's only like four or five of us. I'm sure they're all coming soon. I just hate being late so...here I am."
"Yeah," Jaymes smiled. "I get that."
"Is it nervewracking? Being the new student, transferring in mid-semester and all?"
Jaymes wrapped her arms around her stomach. "I feel a bit out of place sometimes, yeah. Like right now, for instance. I...I haven't had my powers for very long, and I'm sure everone else here has had theirs for their whole lives. I don't know how to truly use them, or tap into them, whatever you want to say. I have no idea what I'm doing."
"Most people don't." Rowan shrugged, offering a quick but comforting smile. "I'm sure you'll be fine. Besides, I could help you with anything that you need. If...if you'd want me to, that is."
"That makes me feel better, thanks." Jaymes physically felt her shoulders relax slightly.
"Yeah, yeah." He nodded quickly. "You're welcome."
Before Jaymes knew it, the rest of the class joined them in the barren room along with the instructor and soon, the lesson was starting. It went pretty smoothly, and the only homework that was assigned was to lift a weight a couple of times with your powers, to practice lifting heavier objects.
But of course, Jaymes had forgotten to grab her personal weight, that the teacher had laid out for the class, to take back to her dorm.
Since Enid knew everyone's business due to her blog-turned-newsletter, Jaymes shot her a text asking for Rowan's dorm number, hoping that she might be able to borrow his weight so she could complete her assignment.
She marched through the school, slipping past a hall moniter who was distracted on their phone, creeping into the boys' quarters, which had been highly advised against by Princpal Weems under the threat of a suspension.
But here she was, doing it anyways.
Finally, she found the correct dorm number, and she knocked softly on the wooden door. Rocking back and forth on her heels, she waited just a few moments before the door was unlocked and opened.
Much to Jaymes' surprise, Xavier stood in the doorway, and she couldn't help the breath that got caught in her throat.
"Okay, I know you said you weren't stalking me," He said, eyeing her suspicously. "But showing up at my dorm? I mean, this is another level of creepy." He chuckled softly, oblivious to her still being taken aback.
Jaymes blinked a couple times to try and get herself back on track. "I didn't know...I-I'm not..." She inwardly kicked herself for stuttering so much. "I'm here for Rowan."
He just continued to stare at her, and she scrambled to explain further, telling him, "I have to pick up a homework assignment."
"Alright, I'll buy that." He leaned back to yell into the room. "Hey, Rowan? There's someone here to see you."
Rowan quickly joined Xavier in the doorway, smiling when he saw who the surprise guest was. "Oh, hey Jaymes." He greeted her. "What are you doing here?"
"I forgot to grab my weight from class earlier, and the door is locked so I can't get in there. I was hoping that I could borrow yours." Jaymes kept her eyes trained on Rowan's face despite the fact that she could feel Xavier's unwavering gaze on her.
Rowan nodded quickly. "Of course, I'll go grab that. Be right back."
He disappeared back into the room, and Xavier leaned back towards the entry, taking up the whole doorway again. Jaymes stared at the ground, still feeling his eyes on her, chewing on her lip.
An awkward silence covered the two teens like a weighted blanket, and Jaymes hoped that maybe Xavier wouldn't try to talk anymore, but of course, he didn't follow her unspoken wishes.
"Hey, um." He leaned down ever so slightly, trying to make eye contact with her, but she kept her gaze glued to the hardwood floors. "I'm sorry about the spider thing, by the way. I didn't mean to actually make you upset."
"I wasn't upset." Jaymes peered up at him through her lashes, her interest peeked by his words.
"You seemed pretty upset."
"Fine, I was a little bit upset. But it's not like I caused a scene or anything." She lifted her head to make eye contact with him, giving him her full attention.
"You literally almost dropped an f-bomb in front of a teacher." He laughed loudly at this.
"That's not that much of a scene for me." Jaymes stared down at her feet, her voice coming out quiet from the shame.
"What do you mean?" His teasing tone instantly shifted, and he leaned against the doorframe further, peering down at her with his full attention.
"I just...freak out sometimes." She shook her head, trying to push away the bad feelings.
"Freak out? What, do you like have some kind of telekinetic meltdown or something?"
"Something like that."
"Something like that?" He sucked in a breath, raising his eyebrows. Jaymes didn't say anything else, causing Xavier to drop his curousity.
"Fine," he said. "You don't have to tell me. But even if you 'freak out' I'm sure you're not a freak, Jaymes."
"You literally called me weird yesterday." Jaymes scoffed at him, despite feeling her chest soften at his words.
"Yeah, but..." he moved away from leaning on the doorframe. "I meant, like, in a good way."
"Weird in a good way?" Jaymes wasn't convinced.
"Yeah, like...weird like...special." He said, a smile twitching at the corners of his lips.
"Special?"
"Mm-hmm." He nodded.
Jaymes found herself being sucked into his eyes, the green in his pupils revealing to be hypnotic. A slight smile danced on both of their faces as they watched each other's every slight movement, a kind of magnetic pull arising between them.
"Alright, one ten pound weight." Rowan was back, immediately snapping Jaymes out of her little trance. "Here you go."
She took the small dumbbell from his hands, smiling politely at him, trying to hide the fact that her heart was pounding. "Thanks, Rowan. You're a lifesaver."
"Aw, thank you." He readjusted his glasses, smiling back at her. "And no problem, you can come to me for anything."
"That means alot." She stepped back from
the door, looking down at her combat boots for a second before lifting her eyes back up to Xavier.
"I'll see you both tomorrow." she spoke to both of the boys, but her eyes were only on one of them. "Goodnight."
"See you." Rowan said.
"Night." Xavier said, and Jaymes saw a slight, intrigued twinkle in his eye just before he shut the door. She made her way back to her own dorm, trying to think about classes, assignments, and homework, but she could only focus on one thing. Or rather, one person.
