Chapter 67

" Kai, Cole. You two go into the lava and rescue the kids." Lloyd instructed.

" But we don't know if they're even there!" Jay protested.

" Good point. Okay, they go down to the lava, Jaya can go to the mountains, and me and Zane'll stay here."

That's how they ended up at this moment- Kai and Cole. They were currently taking cover from a tremor. Well, Cole. Kai had other plans.

The volcanic tremors had barely subsided when Kai, ever the impulsive one, declared, "Let's go check it out!" He was already halfway to the simmering crater, a trail of singed grass and smoldering pebbles marking his path.

Cole, ever the voice of reason (and self-preservation), scrambled after him. "Hold on, Sparkplug! This isn't a barbecue!"

But Kai, fueled by a mixture of curiosity and a touch of recklessness, was already peering into the crater. "Whoa," he breathed, his eyes widening at the spectacle before him. A churning sea of molten lava bubbled and spat, its fiery glow painting the ashen sky an angry red.

Suddenly, a stray ember drifted towards Kai, landing harmlessly on his shoulder. He swatted it away with a dismissive laugh, oblivious to the danger. "See, nothing to-"

His boast was cut short as the ember, seemingly emboldened by Kai's defiance, flared to life. It ignited a stray lock of his hair, which in turn set his entire fiery mane ablaze.

Kai yelped in surprise, swatting at his flaming head like a frantic cat. "Cole! A little help here!"

Cole, who had just reached the crater's rim, burst out laughing. "Maybe next time, consider using your powers for something besides setting yourself on fire, Hothead!"

Despite his amusement, Cole wasn't heartless. He summoned a stream of earth, creating a swirling vortex that extinguished the flames just as they were about to singe Kai's eyebrows.

Kai, now sporting a singed and slightly comical hairstyle, glared at Cole. "That wasn't funny!" he grumbled, smoke curling from his singed hair.

"Oh, it totally was," Cole chuckled, wiping a tear from his eye. "But seriously, we need a plan. Just poking the volcano isn't going to solve anything."

Kai, sheepish but determined, nodded in agreement. "You're right. Let's head back and see what Lloyd thinks. Maybe Zane can whip up some fire-resistant hair gel for me while we're at it."

" Riiiiight. Anyway, we need to find your Sister- In- Law. And her boyfriend."

Kai glared at Cole. " Hey!" He protested. " We don't need to find her! We just need to make sure she's alive. She can handle herself.

" Uh-huh. Right, Kai." Cole raised his eyebrows.

The tremor subsided, leaving an eerie silence in its wake. Kai, his singed hair still smoldering faintly, shot back at Cole, "Look, I know what you're thinking, but Mia's tougher than she looks. She wouldn't have gone spelunking in a volcano without a good reason."

Cole rolled his eyes. "Oh, I'm sure she had a reason," he said sarcastically. "Probably something along the lines of 'ancient prophecy' or 'destiny calls.'" He couldn't help but add a playful jab, knowing Kai wouldn't appreciate it.

As expected, Kai bristled. "Hey, Mia's got a good head on her shoulders! She wouldn't do anything reckless." Despite his bravado, a flicker of worry flickered in his eyes. The thought of his sister facing a fiery death was unsettling, even if he wouldn't admit it out loud.

"Alright, alright," Cole conceded, seeing the concern etched on Kai's face. "We both know they're probably fine. But Lloyd specifically told us to check the lava. So, how do we propose we do that without becoming human barbeque?"

Kai pondered for a moment, his fiery gaze fixed on the churning lava lake below. An idea, as reckless as it was typically Kai, sparked in his eyes.

"We go in," he declared, a mischievous grin spreading across his face.

Cole's jaw dropped. "What?! Are you crazy? We can't just jump into a lake of molten rock!"

"Relax, Earth-mover," Kai chuckled, his voice brimming with confidence (or perhaps a touch of foolhardiness). "I've got a plan." He winked at Cole, a glint of fiery determination in his eyes. "Just trust me."

Cole, ever the voice of reason, was about to launch into a full-blown protest when a loud rumbling sound interrupted him. The ground beneath them began to shake violently, another tremor far stronger than the last. They both lost their footing, tumbling towards the edge of the crater.

Kai, his reflexes honed by years of ninja training, managed to grab a jutting rock at the last second, arresting his fall. Cole wasn't as lucky. He slid down the loose volcanic ash, teetering precariously on the brink of the molten inferno.

"Cole!" Kai yelled, his voice laced with panic. He reached out a hand, his fingers brushing against Cole's sleeve just as he began to slip.

With a surge of adrenaline, Kai channeled his fire powers, creating a flaming rope that snaked around Cole's wrist. He yanked back with all his might, hauling Cole back from the fiery abyss.

Cole scrambled to his feet, coughing and sputtering. He looked at Kai, a mixture of gratitude and exasperation in his eyes. "Thanks, Kai," he muttered, dusting himself off.

"Don't mention it," Kai replied, his bravado momentarily shaken. He looked down at the churning lava, the heat radiating up in waves. His earlier plan, whatever it was, suddenly seemed less than appealing.

"Maybe we should head back and regroup," Cole suggested cautiously. "There's got to be a safer way to find Mia and Nelson."

Kai, for once, readily agreed. The near-death experience had taken the wind out of his sails, both literally and figuratively. He knew Cole was right. There had to be a better way, a less fiery way, to navigate this molten mess.

As they retreated from the crater's edge, a glint of metal caught Kai's eye. Half-buried in the volcanic ash lay a familiar object – a silver katana, its hilt adorned with a jade dragon. Kai's heart leaped in his chest. It was Mia's katana.

Then, he heard laughs. They slowly walked to the sound.

Relief washed over Kai in a tidal wave as he saw Mia. There she was, a vision of brown hair and brown eyes against the desolate volcanic landscape. She wasn't engulfed in flames, she wasn't injured – she was doing backflips. And not just any backflips, these were daring, gravity-defying maneuvers that left Cole slack-jawed.

Nelson, ever the enthusiastic cheerleader, whooped with delight alongside the pups and Blackie, their excited barks echoing through the ashen plains.

"Mia!" Kai boomed, a mixture of relief and exasperation coloring his voice. She couldn't have picked a worse time to be showing off her acrobatics.

Mia, mid-flip, heard his call and landed gracefully in a crouch, a wide grin splitting her face. "Kai!" she shrieked, abandoning Nelson and the cheering squad and racing towards him. She threw her arms around him in a bone-crushing hug.

"Kai, you're okay! I was so worried!"

Kai, momentarily stunned by the sudden embrace, chuckled and hugged her back. "Easy there, tiger. We're both fine."

Just then, Cole, who had been staring open-mouthed at the reunion, noticed a figure standing a few paces away. The figure was engulfed in blackness, but there was no mistaking the long white beard and wise eyes.

"Master Wu?!" Cole exclaimed, his voice filled with disbelief. "Is that really you?"

Wu chuckled, a sound that echoed eerily in the volcanic wasteland. "Indeed it is, Cole. Mia found me, thank her heart."

Mia, pulling back from Kai's embrace, a sheepish grin on her face, confirmed Wu's words. "That's why I left, Kai. I wanted to find Master Wu. With a little help from Master Wu's orb thing, I managed to pull it off."

Kai raised an eyebrow, a playful smile tugging at his lips. "So, you're telling me you saved the day with some fancy lava flips and a history lesson? Sounds about right."

Mia playfully swatted his arm. "Hey, it worked, didn't it?" She turned to Wu, her voice filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Master Wu. For everything."

Wu placed a hand on her shoulder. "The gratitude is mutual, Mia. You have grown into a remarkable young ninja."

He then turned to Kai and Cole, a twinkle in his eye. "Now, shall we get out of this volcanic wasteland and rejoin the others? I believe there's much to discuss."

" This is NOT a wasteland!"Mia said.

Nelson, ever the oblivious one, piped up from behind them. "Haha, very funny Mia. But seriously, this place is a total wasteland!"

Mia pivoted on her heel, fixing him with a playful death stare that sent shivers down his spine. "Nelson," she said through gritted teeth, "care to rephrase that?"

Nelson, gulped, his smile faltering. "Uh, n-no wasteland here! Beautiful volcanic... uh... sightseeing location?"

Mia smirked, a hint of amusement in her eyes. "That's better."
