Chapter 60
The monastery buzzed with a nervous energy. Lloyd, his youthful face etched with worry, addressed the assembled group of ninja. Nya, her black hair bouncing all over the place, paced restlessly beside him. Kai, ever the optimist, tried (and failed) to maintain a carefree facade. Cole, the stoic one, gripped his trusty hammer a little tighter than usual. Zane, the nindroid, his metallic features unreadable, stood silently processing the information.
"We haven't been able to locate them," Lloyd announced, his voice heavy with despair. "Master Wu's tracking spell keeps hitting a dead end. It's like they've vanished into thin air."
A tense silence descended upon the group, broken only by Nya's frustrated huff. "Vanished? That doesn't make any sense! We need to do something, Lloyd!"
Garmadon, his once-villainous features softened with concern for his son's friends, stepped forward. "There's more," he began, his voice low. "The last reading I managed to get from Wu's spell... it indicated a surge of... geothermal energy."
Kai, who had been trying to juggle flaming knives in a pathetic attempt to lighten the mood, fumbled and dropped them, extinguishing the flames with a hiss. "Geothermal energy? You mean... like... lava?"
Garmadon nodded grimly. "There's a possibility they may have fallen into a volcanic vent."
Cole's grip on his hammer tightened further. "A volcanic vent? But that's... that's practically a death sentence!"
Nya glared at Garmadon, her voice laced with anger and fear as she sprayed water on the flames. "You're saying they could be... in the magma right now?"
Garmadon avoided her gaze. "The possibility exists, Nya. But we can't give up hope. We need to find a way to reach them, and fast."
Zane, who had been analyzing the limited data available, spoke up for the first time. "Perhaps," he suggested, his voice flat but logical, "we can utilize the monastery's geothermal reserves to create a temporary heat shield. It would allow us to venture close enough to the vent to investigate further."
Lloyd's eyes lit up with a flicker of hope. "That could work! We just need to find a way to locate them within the vent itself."
Pixal, who had been monitoring their communication systems, chimed in. "There might be a way. If Mia or Nelson are still conscious, and if they're carrying any communication devices, we might be able to pick up a faint signal."
A collective sigh of relief swept through the group. It wasn't a guaranteed solution, but it was a start. A chance.
"Alright," Lloyd declared, his voice firm with newfound resolve. "We have a plan. Zane, Nya, you two work on the heat shield. Cole, Pixal, help me search for any communication signals. We're not giving up on Mia and Nelson. Not yet."
The despair that had threatened to consume them just moments ago was replaced by a renewed sense of purpose. They would move mountains, literally and figuratively, to bring their friends back. The fate of not just Mia and Nelson, but Ninjago itself, might depend on it.

Hours later, the monastery bustled with activity, a stark contrast to the scene unfolding deep within a dense jungle. Hanging precariously from a network of intertwined branches, the ninja found themselves in a predicament that would have been comical if not for the sheer life-or-death situation.
Lloyd, dangling upside down by his fingertips, glared at the culprit responsible for their current predicament – Zane. The nindroid, usually the epitome of logic and precision, stood sheepishly a few branches below, his metallic body covered in leaves and twigs.
"So," Lloyd gritted out, his voice strained, "you're telling me the geothermal heat shield... malfunctioned?"
Zane winced. "There might have been a slight calibration error," he admitted, his voice tinny through his built-in speakers.
Nya, who was clinging to a branch with surprising agility for someone in heavy water armor, scoffed. "Slight error? We're practically monkey bait here, Zane!"
Cole, dangling by his trusty hammer, chuckled nervously. "At least we're not facing molten lava anymore, right?" he offered, his voice echoing through the dense foliage.
Pixal, perched precariously on a branch with her techno-blades drawn for balance, rolled her eyes. "This is hardly the time for jokes, Cole." She turned to Lloyd, her voice laced with concern. "What's the plan, boss?"
Lloyd, ever the leader, surveyed their precarious position. Below them, a ferocious pack of razor-fanged squirrels paced restlessly, their beady eyes fixated on the hapless ninjas.
Just then, Garmadon's voice boomed through their communication system, crackling with a hint of amusement. "Still hanging in there, team? Sounds like your rescue mission has taken a rather... arboreal detour."
Lloyd winced. The last thing they needed was their reformed-but-still-sarcastic father adding to their woes.
"We're working on it, Dad," he replied through gritted teeth. "Any news on Mia and Nelson?"
Garmadon sighed. "Still nothing. But Nya," he paused dramatically, "there might be a slight... change of plans regarding the wedding."
Nya's eyes widened. "Wedding? What wedding?"
Kai, who had been unusually quiet until now, sputtered in protest. "Wedding? Garmadon, are you insane? We're stuck in a tree, surrounded by angry squirrels, and you're talking about a wedding?!"
" If you really want to throw a wedding, dad, then do one for Jay and Nya!" Lloyd cried.
" What?!" Jay said, looking at Lloyd, surprised as he reached for Nya's hand.
" Yeah, what?!" Nya echoed, grabbing it.
Even Cole, ever the voice of reason, couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at Lloyd's outburst.
"Alright, alright," Lloyd sighed, realizing he may have overreacted. "Look, I just... well, I thought... maybe..." He stammered, searching for the right words. "Maybe you two getting married would be a good thing. You know, for Ninjago's morale and all."
Kai, finally recovering from his initial shock, let out a hearty laugh. "Lloyd, buddy, with all due respect, weddings aren't exactly a morale booster when we're dangling by a thread over a volcano!"
Just then, Zane, who had been analyzing their predicament with his usual stoicism, spoke up. "Actually," he interjected, "a wedding could be exactly what we need."
All eyes turned to the nindroid, his metallic face displaying a rare hint of amusement. "Explain," Nya demanded, curiosity replacing her earlier annoyance.
Zane hummed thoughtfully for a moment. "Master Wu once mentioned a rare Ninjago custom," he explained. "The Unity Ceremony. It's said to be a powerful ritual that can harness the combined strength of two bonded souls."
A collective gasp resonated through the tree. Lloyd's eyes widened in realization. "You're saying... if Jay and Nya get married, they could combine their powers to create a powerful enough blast to get us out of here?"
Zane gave a single, metallic nod. "Not only that, but they can defeat the Overlord," he confirmed.
Jay and Nya exchanged glances, a mixture of trepidation and excitement swirling in their eyes. They had discussed marriage before, but it was always a distant dream, something to consider after the Overlord was finally defeated. Now, faced with a life-or-death situation, the idea of tying the knot seemed less like a romantic fantasy and more like a desperate gamble.
"So," Jay finally spoke, his voice hoarse but determined, "you're saying... we have to get married... to save ourselves?"
Nya squeezed his hand reassuringly. "Not just ourselves, Jay," she corrected him. "We have to save Ninjago. And besides..." she added with a playful smile, "who says a wedding has to be boring?"
A determined glint sparked in Jay's eyes. He straightened his shoulders, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "Alright then," he announced, his voice ringing with newfound confidence. "Looks like we're getting married, Nya. But only if you promise to let me write the vows."
Nya snorted with laughter, a welcome relief in the tense situation. "We'll see about that, Sparky."
Garmadon, ever the showman, couldn't resist milking the situation for a laugh. "Oh, goodie!" he boomed, his voice echoing through the leaves. "A wedding! Finally, something interesting happens around here!"
Before Lloyd could retort, Jay piped up, a frantic glint in his eyes. "Wait! Hold on a sec! Can't we, like, do online shopping for wedding clothes? You know, faster delivery and all?" The idea of Garmadon rummaging through some ancient wedding wardrobe sent shivers down his spine.
Garmadon's smile faltered for a moment. The concept of online shopping seemed alien to him. "Online shopping?" he scoffed. "What kind of barbaric practice is that? A wedding is a sacred occasion, Jay! It demands tradition, not some impersonal internet transaction!"
Nya, ever the pragmatist, chimed in. "Garmadon has a point, Jay," she conceded. "But there has to be a compromise. We need something appropriate, but we also need it fast." She scanned the dwindling daylight filtering through the leaves. Time wasn't exactly on their side.
Cole, ever the resourceful one, thumped his fist on a sturdy branch. "I have an idea!" he exclaimed. "There's a monastery archive room filled with old relics, maybe even some ceremonial robes! Pixal might be able to hack the security system and get us remote access!"
Cole's idea hung in the air, a glimmer of hope amidst the volcanic chaos. Before Pixal could even begin the hack, Garmadon let out a theatrical groan, interrupting the budding plan.
"No! I will not hear of it!" he declared, throwing his hands up in mock despair. "Those ancient robes are stiff, itchy, and smell like mothballs! Absolutely barbaric!"
The ninja exchanged exasperated glances. Garmadon's melodramatics were as predictable as the setting sun.
"But Dad," Lloyd interjected, exasperated, "we don't exactly have a lot of options here. We're stuck in a tree, remember?"
Ignoring Lloyd's plea, Garmadon, with surprising agility for a man of his age, shimmied down the trunk of the tree with surprising speed. "Leave it to me!" he announced, disappearing into the undergrowth with a flourish of his cape.
The remaining ninja watched him go, a mixture of annoyance and amusement etched on their faces. "Let's hope he gets good clothes for you," Lloyd muttered to Nya, shaking his head.
Just as Pixal was about to initiate her remote access attempt, a triumphant shout echoed from below. "Behold! The perfect wedding attire!"
Garmadon reappeared, dragging behind him a large, ornately decorated chest. The craftsmanship was undeniably impressive – gleaming gold accents adorned the polished black surface, and intricate carvings hinted at the treasures within.
With a flourish, Garmadon pried the chest open, revealing a dazzling array of garments. But instead of the simple, practical robes they'd envisioned, a display of extravagance unfolded before them.
Nya's eyes widened as she beheld a dress unlike anything she'd ever seen. Made of a shimmering, sea-green fabric that seemed to shimmer in the fading light, it flowed gracefully from a fitted bodice, adorned with sparkling jewels that resembled tiny dewdrops.
Next to it lay a suit unlike any Jay had ever worn. Sure, it was black, but that was where the similarities ended. The fabric, a smooth, midnight blue, shimmered faintly with an inner light. Intricate silver embroidery traced the lapels and cuffs, and a matching cummerbund completed the ensemble.
While undeniably beautiful, the outfits were anything but practical. The dress, with its layers of flowing fabric, seemed ill-suited for a hasty wedding ceremony in a tree. And the suit, with its intricate embroidery, looked like it could snag on a single twig.
Lloyd voiced their collective thought. "Dad," he began cautiously, "these are... well, very nice. But aren't they a bit... much?"
Garmadon, his face beaming with pride, puffed out his chest. "Much? My dear Lloyd, these are masterpieces! Crafted by the finest tailors in Ninjago, imbued with ancient symbols of unity and strength. Perfect for a wedding that will be remembered for ages!"
Nya and Jay exchanged a hesitant glance. While the clothes were undeniably stunning, the practicality of battling angry squirrels and harnessing their powers in such finery was questionable.
Garmadon's self-proclaimed expertise extended beyond just the wedding attire. While Pixal wrestled with the ancient security protocols of the monastery archives, Garmadon reappeared, this time with a triumphant grin and a surprising amount of wedding paraphernalia.
In his arms, he cradled a magnificent three-tiered cake. The frosting, a cascading waterfall of snowy white, was adorned with delicate sugar flowers, each one a perfect replica of Ninjago's native blooms. Atop the cake, two miniature figures, intricately sculpted from marzipan, stood frozen in a loving embrace – a clear representation of the bride and groom.
Beside the cake, Garmadon precariously balanced a collection of other wedding essentials. A shimmering white veil, edged with intricate silver embroidery, seemed to catch the fading sunlight, transforming it into a soft halo. A pair of elegant white satin shoes, adorned with a single sparkling jewel on each toe, peeked out from a velvet box.
Nya couldn't help but be impressed. Garmadon, for all his bluster and theatrics, had somehow managed to procure a wedding ensemble that was both beautiful and practical. The veil, flowing but not overly cumbersome, seemed perfect for a ceremony in the open air. And the shoes, with their sturdy heels, would allow her to navigate the precarious branches with some semblance of grace.
"Well, I'll be darned," Jay muttered, his voice laced with a hint of surprise. "You actually have good taste in this stuff... when it's not for your son, that is."
Garmadon, momentarily oblivious to the jab, puffed out his chest in pride. "Naturally! When it comes to matters of sophistication, I am the undisputed master!"
Cole, ever the pragmatist, cut through the self-congratulatory posturing. "Alright, alright, that's all very impressive," he said, gesturing towards the cake. "But how did you manage to pull all this off so fast?"
Garmadon winked. "Let's just say I have my... resources. Besides," he added, a mischievous glint in his eyes, "a wedding without cake is simply... barbaric."
Nya, a smile playing on her lips, couldn't help but agree. Despite the absurdity of their situation, a warmth bloomed in her chest. Maybe, just maybe, this unconventional wedding in a tree, surrounded by angry squirrels and a live volcano, could be something special after all.
Garmadon, surprisingly spry for his age, managed to climb back up the tree with surprising agility, his arms laden with wedding supplies. With a series of grunts and muttered curses, he hoisted himself onto the branch, narrowly avoiding a particularly disgruntled squirrel in the process.
"Alright, alright," he wheezed, handing the cake and other items to Nya. "There you have it. The finest wedding essentials Ninjago has to offer!"
While Nya and Jay began to discreetly change behind a makeshift curtain of leaves (courtesy of Zane's elemental powers), Garmadon turned his attention to the other ninja.
"Cole," he announced, a mischievous glint in his eyes, "I believe I snagged a spare priest suit for you. Seems only fitting you officiate the ceremony, considering your... earthy connection."
Cole, looking down at the surprisingly well-tailored brown robe Garmadon thrust at him, sputtered in protest. "A priest? But I... I've never officiated a wedding before!"
Garmadon chuckled. "Nonsense! Just follow your heart, and improvise. Besides," he added with a wink, "who else can withstand the wrath of a disgruntled squirrel-god better than you?"
With a resigned sigh, Cole accepted the robe, a nervous smile tugging at his lips. Meanwhile, Lloyd and Zane positioned themselves on a sturdy branch, their expressions a mix of amusement and anticipation. Kai, ever the showman, straightened his shoulders, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
"Alright then," he declared, holding aloft a small, velvet box containing two gleaming rings. "Let's get this unorthodox wedding underway! Who wants to be the ring bearer?"
A chorus of groans met Kai's question, echoing through the rustling leaves. Clearly, the role of ring bearer held little appeal amidst the chaos of their situation. Just then, Garmadon, ever the showman, stepped forward with a flourish.
"Hold your fiery horses, Kai," he boomed, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "This unorthodox ceremony needs a touch of tradition. You, the hotheaded one," he said, poking Kai playfully in the chest, "shall be the ring bearer. Consider it a test of your patience."
Kai, resigned but secretly thrilled at the chance to play a part, puffed out his chest in mock offense. "Fine, fine," he grumbled, accepting the velvet box from Garmadon with a dramatic bow.
With the roles assigned, Cole, clad in the surprisingly well-fitting priest's robe, cleared his throat and began the ceremony. He may not have been a trained officiator, but his voice, usually gruff when dealing with rock monsters, held a surprising gentleness.
"We gather here today," he began, his gaze sweeping over the makeshift congregation, "not in a grand temple or a lush garden, but amidst the branches of a brave tree, facing a fiery foe. We are here to celebrate the union of Nya and Jay, two souls who have fought side-by-side, defying impossible odds and battling the forces of darkness. Their love, like fire and water, may seem like opposing forces, yet together they create a powerful harmony."
Nya, her eyes glistening with tears, exchanged a glance with Jay. She was no longer the headstrong girl who had once dreamt of endless adventure at sea. Jay, once the nervous inventor, had become a pillar of strength by her side.
Taking a deep breath, Nya stepped forward, her voice clear and strong despite the tremor in her heart. "Jay," she began, "You are the storm to my calm, the spark to my invention. You challenge me, you frustrate me, but most importantly, you inspire me. I vow to be your anchor, to ground you when you reach for the impossible, to fan the flames of your creativity. Together, we will face any storm, conquer any foe, and build a future as vibrant and unpredictable as you are." Then she cleared her throat before continuing. " When I was young, I said I would never fall in love with anyone. But that changed the day I got kidnapped. Kai rescued me, and I moved in with you guys. Then, you came. You were sweet, witty, and surprisingly annoying." Jay groaned. " But, you were perfect for me. Together, my intelligence and your building, we did so many things. But I never knew how much I loved you until you made your final wish to Naddakan. That's when I knew the one person I wanted to be with, the one to have kids with, the one to confide in. Would be you." The audience gave a few ' awwwwwwwwwwwwwww''s Jay gave them the death stare.
" That.. that was amazing. Jay?" Cole said, turning to his friend.
Jay, his eyes shining with a love that rivaled the molten lava below, reached out and gently took her hand. "Nya," he choked out, his voice thick with emotion, "you are the water that quenches my thirst for adventure, the calm that soothes my anxieties. You push me to be braver, to reach for the stars, and to never give up on my dreams. I vow to be your fire, to keep your spirit burning bright, to protect you from the darkness, and to love you with every fiber of my being." Then, he looked into Nya's eyes. " When I first became a ninja and met you, I always loved you. You looked perfect. Your hair. You little mole. Even your voice. You would drown on and on and on, and I wouldn't care. Then, Nadakan came." Jay muttered something under his breath, and Nya knew they were curses. " But, we survived. And then, I asked you to be my Yang. And I'm telling you, that was one of the best days of my life!"
Just before Cole was going to pronounce them husband and wife, Kai yelled, " Stop!" And ran to the groom and bride.
" What's up?" Nya asked.
Kai, still panting, held out their medallion pieces.
" Can't.... forget..... this!" He said.
The duo smiled, taking their piece and attaching it on their garments.
Then, Kai held the ring holder in front of Nya's hand. With trembling fingers, Jay slipped the ring onto her finger, a perfect circle of silver symbolizing their eternal bond. Nya, mirroring his actions, placed her ring on his finger, a silent promise of a lifetime of love and adventure.
Cole, his voice choked with emotion, finished the ceremony with a simple, heartfelt declaration. "By the power vested in me, by the squirrels who witness, and by the fire that burns below, I pronounce you husband and wife. You may... well, you may kiss... or hug... or do whatever it is you two lovebirds do."
" Really?!" Jay cried, eyeing Cole madly.
" Yes, really." Cole replied.
Then, a loud groan emerged from the ground.
