Chapter 6

A choked sob echoed from down the hall, punctuated by the rhythmic thump of a fist against a wall. The others winced. Rumi wasn't taking her self-inflicted meltdown well.

With a sigh, Nya nudged Kai and Skylor towards the direction of the noise. "Alright, lovebirds," she said, a hint of amusement in her voice, "go work your magic. Just try not to get punched in the process."

Kai and Skylor exchanged a playful glance. "Don't worry, Nya," Skylor smirked. "We know how to handle a lovesick ninja."

They reached Rumi's door, a rather impressive barrier considering it looked like it had been fortified with several pillows and a stray broom. Kai knocked gently, his voice laced with concern. "Rumi? It's Kai and Skylor. Can we come in?"

Silence greeted him, followed by a muffled, "No! I'm not taking guests... especially not matchmakers!"

Skylor raised an eyebrow. "Matchmakers? Who said anything about matchmaking?"

A hesitant voice peeked through the door. One tear-streaked eye and a mess of hair were all they could see. "Well, aren't you here to... you know... nudge me and Lloyd together?"

Kai chuckled. "Honestly, Rumi, we just wanted to see if you were alright. All that freaking out about your hair? A bit dramatic, wouldn't you say?"

A small sniffle confirmed his suspicion. "Dramatic?" Rumi's voice croaked. "Try completely humiliating! I practically confessed my feelings to Lloyd with my bathroom meltdown!"

Skylor pushed the door open a crack, revealing a red-faced but determined Rumi. "Look," she declared, puffing out her chest, "I can handle myself around Lloyd just fine. I'm a ninja, remember?"

Kai and Skylor exchanged a knowing look. "Oh, we know you're a ninja, Rumi," Kai said, a smile tugging at his lips. "But even the toughest ninjas get nervous sometimes."

Skylor stepped forward. "Besides," she added, a twinkle in her eye, "remember how we were both complete disasters when we first met?"

Kai's brow furrowed. "What? When you tried to freeze me solid at the Tournament of Elements and I nearly turned you into a puddle of molten lava?"

A chuckle escaped Skylor's lips. "Exactly! We were both a mess, completely out of control. But we learned to work together, to trust each other. Maybe..." she trailed off, her voice softer, "maybe that's what's happening with you and Lloyd."

Rumi's cheeks flushed again, but this time, a hint of hope flickered in her eyes. "So... it's okay to be a little nervous?"

Kai grinned. "Absolutely. In fact, it's kind of endearing."

Skylor nudged him playfully. "Easy there, hotshot. We don't want to overwhelm her."

A small smile finally cracked through Rumi's facade. "Maybe you're right," she admitted, a hint of shyness in her voice. "Maybe I can handle talking to Lloyd... eventually."

The door creaked open a little wider, allowing them a glimpse into the room. Pillows were scattered on the floor, a bucket of ice cream sat half-eaten on the bedside table, and a sappy romance novel lay abandoned on the bed.

Skylor chuckled, stepping into the room. "Looks like you're already on the right track," she said, picking up the book and giving Rumi a playful wink. "Now, how about we ditch the self-pity party and get you cleaned up? Maybe then you can face Lloyd with a little more confidence... and a little less ice cream on your face."

Rumi, a genuine smile gracing her lips for the first time that day, nodded in agreement. "Thanks, guys," she mumbled, wiping a stray tear from her eye. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

A newfound sense of calm filled the room as Rumi, with a little help from Kai and Skylor, managed to transform her disaster zone of a room back into a semblance of normalcy. The ice cream evidence was gone, the pillows strategically placed, and the romance novel discreetly tucked away under the bed.

Just as Rumi finished straightening the last picture frame, a hesitant knock echoed on the door. Before any of them could react, the door creaked open, revealing a sheepish-looking Lloyd.

"Uh, hi?" he said, his voice barely a whisper. "Can I come in?"

Rumi's heart leaped into her throat. All her carefully practiced composure vanished in an instant. Her cheeks flushed a brilliant crimson, and a strangled squeak escaped her lips.

Before she could stop herself, she launched into a series of wildly inappropriate actions that would make even Jay cringe.

First, she tripped over a stray pillow, landing in a heap on the floor with a yelp. Then, in a desperate attempt to regain her composure, she babbled a string of incoherent words that sounded suspiciously like a haiku about the virtues of proper posture. Finally, as if that wasn't enough, she attempted a nonchalant hair flip, only to end up with a tangled mess adorning her face.

Lloyd, initially stunned by the whirlwind of activity, couldn't help but burst into laughter. The sound filled the room, warm and genuine, chasing away the awkward tension that had hung in the air.

Rumi, mortified but strangely relieved at his reaction, peeked out from behind her hair. "Oh, hi Lloyd," she mumbled, her voice barely audible. "This... this isn't what it looks like."

Kai and Skylor, suppressing their own laughter, exchanged amused glances. This was definitely not how they envisioned their plan unfolding.

Lloyd, wiping a tear from his eye, stepped further into the room. "Actually," he said, a hint of amusement dancing in his voice, "it looks pretty hilarious. Especially the part where you tried to do a haiku about posture."

Rumi groaned, burying her face in her hands. "Just pretend you never saw that, okay?"

Lloyd chuckled, shaking his head. "Nope, can't do that. It was too good."

He reached out a hand, gently pulling a stray strand of hair from her face. Their eyes met for a moment, a spark of something unspoken flickering between them.

Just then, Kai stepped forward, clearing his throat. "Alright, lovebirds," he teased, "maybe you two should have a private moment. The rest of us have a recovering Overlord situation to deal with."

Skylor nudged him playfully. "Come on, hotshot," she said, ushering him towards the door. "Let's give them some space."

With a final wink at Lloyd and Rumi, Kai and Skylor made their exit, leaving the two of them alone in the room. A comfortable silence settled between them, broken only by the faint sound of their own breathing.

Lloyd, mustering his courage, spoke first. "So, Rumi," he began, a hint of nervousness in his voice, "about that hug..."

Rumi, her cheeks still burning, managed a shy smile. "Yeah, about that hug," she replied. "Maybe it was a little... enthusiastic?"

They both burst into laughter, the tension melting away. Perhaps their feelings wouldn't be confessed in a grand, heroic moment, but in this awkward, messy way that somehow felt perfectly them.

As their laughter subsided, Lloyd took a step closer, his gaze lingering on Rumi's face. "Rumi," he said softly, "you were amazing while I was gone. Strong, brave... and a little bit embarrassing, but that's okay."

Rumi, her heart swelling, reached out and took his hand. "And you, Lloyd," she whispered, "are the bravest ninja I know. Even if you do have a tendency to get kidnapped by evil overlords."

Their eyes locked again, the unspoken emotions swirling between them. Maybe it was too soon, maybe the timing wasn't perfect, but in that moment, surrounded by the remnants of Rumi's meltdown and the echoes of their laughter, they knew something special had bloomed.

With a gentle smile, Lloyd leaned in, his lips brushing against hers in a soft, tentative kiss. It was a simple gesture, but it spoke volumes. The future was uncertain, filled with challenges and battles, but they would face them together, stronger for having each other. And who knows, maybe along the way, they would find a way to navigate the messy, wonderful world of love, one awkward moment at a time.

The gentle kiss was shattered by a sudden eruption of whoops and cheers from outside the room. Kai, Skylor, Nya, Cole, Jay, and even Zane stood in the hallway, faces beaming with mischievous delight.

"Finally!" Jay whooped, throwing his arms in the air. "Took you long enough!"

Rumi, startled by the sudden interruption, let out a shriek and scrambled back, her cheeks the color of a ripe tomato. Lloyd, for his part, simply stared at his friends in disbelief.

"What in the name of Ninjago...?" he sputtered.

Skylor, grinning from ear to ear, stepped forward. "Don't worry, Lloyd," she said, her voice dripping with amusement. "We just wanted to make sure you weren't... slacking off in your recovery."

Nya nudged Kai playfully. "Yeah, seems like you needed a little encouragement."

Rumi, her voice a high-pitched squeak, stammered, "I-I wasn't... we weren't... it wasn't like that!"

Her attempt at denial only fueled the others' amusement. Cole, ever the peacemaker, chuckled and intervened.

"Alright, alright, let's give them some space," he said, ushering the others away from the doorway. "They have a... lot to unpack."

With one last teasing glance at Lloyd and Rumi, the group started to disperse, their laughter echoing down the hall.

Rumi, mortified but strangely touched by their friends' enthusiasm, sank down onto the bed, burying her face in her hands.

"They planned this, didn't they?" Lloyd asked, a hint of amusement creeping into his voice.

Rumi mumbled a muffled confirmation from behind her hands.

Lloyd, unable to hold back a smile, sat down beside her. "Well," he said gently, nudging her with his elbow, "they did get us to confess our feelings, didn't they?"

Rumi peeked out from behind her hands, her eyes filled with a mix of embarrassment and something else – a spark of affection. "Maybe they did," she admitted, a small smile playing on her lips.

A comfortable silence settled between them once again, broken only by the faint sounds of their friends' fading laughter. The awkwardness of the moment was still there, but it was laced with a newfound warmth, a feeling of connection that had blossomed amidst the chaos.

"So," Lloyd finally broke the silence, his voice soft, "where were we?"

Rumi, her cheeks still burning, met his gaze. "Maybe," she said, her voice barely a whisper, "we can pick up where we left off... without an audience this time?"

Lloyd leaned in closer, a playful grin on his face. "Sounds perfect," he murmured, his lips brushing against hers once more.

This time, the kiss was deeper, more confident. It held a promise of something new, something exciting, a future they would face together, hand-in-hand, with their friends cheering them on from the sidelines (hopefully at a more appropriate distance next time).

As they pulled away, breathless and flushed, a sense of calm settled over them. The road ahead was still uncertain, filled with battles and challenges, but they wouldn't face them alone. They had each other, and that, in the grand scheme of things, was all that truly mattered.

The stolen kiss hung heavy in the air, a sweet interruption that left Rumi breathless. But the moment was short-lived. The whoops and hollers from outside the room morphed into a cacophony of footsteps retreating down the hall, punctuated by Nya's muffled giggle.

Rumi, jolted back to reality, shot upright on the bed. Her cheeks burned like embers, and a frantic energy surged through her. She bounced off the bed, her bare feet slapping against the cool floor.

"Oh no, oh no, oh no!" she blabbered, pacing a whirlwind path around the recently straightened room. "This is a disaster! A total disaster! What will everyone think? Now they know... and they'll tease us endlessly... and what about Lloyd? Does he even...?"

Her voice trailed off as she spun around to face Lloyd, who was still perched on the edge of the bed, a slightly bewildered smile playing on his lips.

"Appointments!" she blurted out, a new thought striking her. "We need appointments! Like, a schedule for... for not interrupting each other when we're clearly in the middle of... of a private moment!"

Lloyd blinked, trying to process the rapid-fire word vomit erupting from Rumi. "Appointments?" he echoed, raising an eyebrow. "For what?"

Rumi threw her hands up in the air, her frustration momentarily outweighing her shyness. "For kissing, of course! Don't you think we need a designated kissing time? Like, Tuesdays and Thursdays between training sessions, or maybe after Nya finishes her never-ending lectures on proper hygiene...?"

Lloyd chuckled, the sound warm and genuine. He reached out, taking her hand gently in his. "Rumi," he said softly, "relax. It's okay. We don't need appointments for that."

His touch, his calm demeanor, had a grounding effect on her. The frantic energy subsided, replaced by a shy smile. "Right," she mumbled, pulling her hand back and tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "Of course not. Appointments for kissing sound... ridiculous."

A comfortable silence settled between them, a stark contrast to the earlier chaos. Lloyd stood up, his eyes searching hers. "Though," he began, a hint of amusement in his voice, "maybe we could have a word with your friends about respecting personal space. Especially when it comes to... witnessing smooch fests."

Rumi's cheeks flushed again, but this time, it was accompanied by a genuine laugh. "Maybe," she agreed, the playful banter easing the tension. "Although, knowing them, they'll probably try to charge an entrance fee for future... smooch fests, as you so eloquently put it."

Lloyd grinned. "Well, then we'll just have to find more private locations," he said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Places where overenthusiastic ninja can't crash our moments."

Their playful banter was abruptly cut short by a piercing shriek that echoed through the monastery. It wasn't Nya's usual flustered squeak; this was a scream laced with pure panic.

Lloyd's heart lurched. He bolted out of the room, Rumi hot on his heels, her earlier nervousness replaced by raw fear. They found the others gathered in the living room, their faces grim. Nya held a flickering communication crystal, her expression etched with worry.

"What's happening?" Lloyd demanded, his voice tight.

Before anyone could answer, Kai's voice, strained and urgent, filled the room. "...critical condition...hospital...need all available hands..." The crystal went dark with a snap.

The color drained from Rumi's face. A strangled cry escaped her lips, and before anyone could react, she tore past them, a blur of blue racing towards the monastery's exit.

Lloyd stared after her for a moment, his own worry rising. "Who was that?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Nya stepped forward, her face grim. "Cole," she said, his voice heavy with sadness. "He's been... there's been an accident."

The weight of the news settled in Lloyd's stomach like a stone. Cole, their teammate, their friend, in critical condition. All the teasing, the awkward confessions, the blossoming romance – it all paled in comparison to the fear gripping them now.

"We have to go," Nya said, her voice firm despite the tremor running through it. "Every minute counts."

Without another word, they sprang into action. Weapons were strapped on, vehicles were readied, and a grim determination settled over the group. Lloyd, his gaze fixed on the empty doorway where Rumi had disappeared, knew this was no time for personal feelings. Now, they had to fight, not for love or laughter, but for the life of their brother in arms.
