Chapter 5
The deafening roar of the Bounty's engine filled the air, barely muffled by the howling wind. Kai, gripping the steering wheel tightly, expertly navigated the rocky, cloud-strewn terrain. Beside him, Nya clung to the dashboard, her knuckles white. In the back, Cole and Jay slumped against a pile of crates, gasping for breath.
"Are... we... there yet?" Jay wheezed, his voice barely audible over the engine noise.
Kai glanced back at them through the rearview mirror, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes. "Not quite, Jay. But we're making good time. Thanks to Zane, for once, we have a clear path to follow."
Cole groaned, rubbing his aching shoulders. "Speaking of Zane, where is he anyway? Shouldn't he be back by now with that magic tea?"
Just as if summoned by his words, a glint of metal caught Kai's eye in the distance. A streak of blue zipped through the clouds, growing larger with each passing moment.
"Looks like Zane's on his way," Kai announced, a grin spreading across his face.
Moments later, Zane landed the Falcon with a flourish right beside the Bounty. He hopped out, his face etched with concern.
"Did you find the tea, Zane?" Nya asked, her voice filled with hope.
Zane held up a small vial filled with a shimmering, moonlit blue liquid. "Indeed, Nya. I managed to locate a hidden grove of Moonpetal Blooms high up in the Cloud Kingdom mountains. It was a treacherous climb, but here it is."
Relief washed over the group. They had the tea, their only hope for reviving Lloyd. Now, all they had to do was get back to the Monastery as quickly as possible.
"Alright, ninjas," Kai declared, his voice firm. "Let's get back to Lloyd. Time is of the essence."
With renewed determination, they piled back into the Bounty. Kai pushed the engine, and the aircraft shot forward, leaving a trail of clouds in its wake. They were going to save Lloyd, and find Wu.
_______________________________________________________________________________Back at the Monastery, a different kind of energy pulsed through the air. Gone was the earlier despair, replaced by a frantic display of... well, something entirely unexpected. Rumi, ever the loyal friend, stood in the center of Lloyd's room, a determined glint in her eyes. But she wasn't weeping or whispering words of comfort anymore. Instead, she was... doing cartwheels.
Yes, cartwheels. And not just any ordinary cartwheels. These were cartwheels with a purpose, executed with surprising agility and a surprising amount of speed. As she completed each revolution, she spun faster, her movements blurring into a whirlwind of vibrant blue cloth.
Suddenly, with a final flourish, Rumi came to a stop, arms outstretched, and launched into a dazzling display of Spinjitzu. A swirling vortex of white energy erupted around her, whipping the room into a mini-cyclone. Books toppled from shelves, papers fluttered like startled birds, and even a stray pillow or two went airborne.
Cole, who had just entered the room with the others, blinked in astonishment. "Rumi? What are you doing?!" he exclaimed, shielding his face from a rogue sheet of parchment.
Rumi, oblivious to the chaos she was causing, spun to a halt, her hair a mess but a triumphant grin plastered on her face. "Training!" she declared, her voice slightly breathless.
Jay, ever the pragmatist, scratched his head. "Training? For what? We just got back, and Lloyd's still..." He trailed off, gesturing towards the unconscious figure on the bed.
Rumi, her eyes sparkling with newfound resolve, held up a finger. "Exactly! Lloyd needs us to be strong, to be ready for whatever comes next. And who knows, maybe if I master Spinjitzu, I can help him recover faster! Besides," she added, a mischievous glint in her eyes, "who says training can't be fun?"
Kai, a chuckle escaping his lips, couldn't help but admire Rumi's unwavering spirit. Even in the face of despair, she found a way to channel her worry into action. And who knew, maybe her unconventional training method would actually work.
Nya, ever the voice of reason, stepped forward. "Rumi, you have a good heart, but maybe a less... destructive training method would be better for Lloyd's room."
Rumi sheepishly rubbed the back of her neck. "Right. Maybe cartwheeling through the halls would be a better idea?"
The groan that rose from the group morphed into a wave of laughter as they envisioned Rumi's whirlwind training session wreaking havoc through the halls. Despite the worry that clung to them like a shadow, the image provided a much-needed moment of levity.
Zane, ever the observant one, noticed a slight tremor in Rumi's hands and a weariness in her eyes that transcended her recent cartwheel extravaganza. "Rumi," he said gently, placing a hand on her shoulder, "you look exhausted. Perhaps a break from training would be beneficial?"
Rumi, however, bristled. "Exhausted? Me? Nonsense!" she declared, her voice a touch too loud and her posture a little too rigid. "I'm just getting warmed up! Lloyd needs us to be at our..." Her voice trailed off as a yawn escaped her lips, betraying her earlier assertion.
Jay, noticing her struggle, chimed in playfully. "Yeah, Rumi. Maybe some Spinjitzu training can wait. How about some Spinjitzu coffee instead? I hear there's a new blend that packs a real punch."
The mention of coffee perked Rumi up slightly. "Coffee? Now that's an idea!" she exclaimed, a hint of desperation creeping into her voice. "I can't train properly on an empty stomach, can I?"
With renewed determination, and a healthy dose of fatigue denial, Rumi made her way out of the room. The Monastery kitchen, with its promise of a steaming cup of coffee, called to her like a siren song.
Meanwhile, Kai nudged Cole with his arm and whispered, "Don't worry, I have a hunch this coffee break might be... eventful."
Cole, unsure of what to make of Kai's cryptic remark, could only shrug. As for Rumi, she entered the kitchen, her mind already set on the invigorating taste of a strong cup of coffee. She reached for the familiar canister labeled "Coffee," her mind on a single goal – to restore her energy and get back to training. But fatigue, it seemed, was starting to cloud her judgment.
Oblivious to the mistake, Rumi scooped a generous amount of dark, grainy powder into the coffee maker. It was only after the pungent, earthy aroma filled the air that she paused, a frown creasing her forehead. "This coffee smells... different," she muttered to herself.
Ignoring the nagging doubt, she poured herself a cup, the dark liquid swirling in the mug. With a weary sigh, she brought the cup to her lips, ready to finally fuel her training frenzy. But as the first sip hit her tongue, her eyes widened in shock.
"Soil?!" she sputtered, spitting out the gritty liquid. "This is soil! Who puts soil in the coffee canister?!"
The answer, of course, was in Mia's lap on the plane, her emerald eyes sparkling with amusement. Blackie, it seemed, had taken it upon herself to ensure Rumi got a "grounded" approach to her training, quite literally.
A chorus of alarmed shouts ripped through the air as Rumi's spluttering cry echoed through the Monastery. Cole, Jay, Nya, and Kai all rushed into the kitchen, expecting to find some kind of brewing disaster.
They skidded to a halt, taking in the scene before them. Rumi stood by the counter, a look of utter betrayal etched on her face, clutching a steaming mug that now sported a dark, muddy stain on the floor beside it.
"Rumi, what happened?" Nya asked, her concern evident.
Rumi, voice thick with disbelief, pointed an accusing finger at the coffee canister. "Someone... someone put soil in the coffee!" she sputtered.
Kai and Jay exchanged confused glances. Soil? In the coffee? It sounded like a prank, but who would do such a thing? And how, for that matter, would soil even end up in the coffee container in the first place?
Cole, ever the pragmatist, stepped forward. "Alright, Rumi," he said gently, "let's take a deep breath. Maybe you just grabbed the wrong canister by mistake."
Rumi shook her head vehemently. "No! I'm sure of it! It was clearly labeled 'Coffee'!"
Just then, Zane, who had been examining the canister with a furrowed brow, spoke up. "The label is indeed for coffee," he confirmed. "However, it appears to have been tampered with. Someone must have switched the labels and replaced the coffee grounds with... well, with soil."
A wave of suspicion washed over the group. Who would play such a prank, and why? The situation was already tense with worry for Lloyd, and this added a layer of unnecessary confusion.
Suddenly, Kai's eyes narrowed. "Wait a minute," he said, a thought striking him. "Wasn't Mia with Blackie? And didn't Blackie have a bit of a... mischievous streak?"
Cole and Jay's eyes widened in realization. Blackie, with her sassy attitude and penchant for trouble, seemed like the perfect culprit.
"Maybe we should ask Mia when she gets back," Jay suggested, scratching his head. "Though, knowing Blackie, this might have been her way of... motivating Rumi to find a different training method."
A small smile played on Nya's lips. Blackie's methods might be unorthodox, but they did tend to get results.
Meanwhile, Rumi, still fuming about the soil incident, glared at the offending canister. "Well," she declared, wiping a speck of dirt from her chin, "if they think they can stop me from training, they've got another thing coming!"
With a newfound determination (and perhaps a touch of stubbornness), Rumi marched out of the kitchen. The others watched her go, a mix of amusement and concern battling within them. Despite the prank, their focus remained on Lloyd.
"Alright, team," Kai announced, his voice firm. "Let's get Lloyd the tea. Time is of the essence."
With renewed purpose, they gathered around Lloyd's bedside. Cole held the vial containing the Moonpetal Bloom Tea, a small glimmer of hope flickering in his eyes.
"Here goes, Lloyd," he murmured, gently pouring the shimmering liquid down his friend's throat.
The room fell silent as they waited, their gazes fixed on Lloyd's unmoving form. Would the tea work? Would their friend finally awaken?
As the tension stretched, a faint flicker of movement from Lloyd drew a collective gasp from the group. His eyelids fluttered open, revealing a hint of confusion in their depths. But they were open nonetheless.
A weary smile tugged at the corner of Cole's mouth. "Lloyd?" he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
A wave of relief washed over the room as Lloyd's eyes fluttered open. A weak smile tugged at his lips as he met Cole's concerned gaze. "Cole? Guys? What... what happened?" he rasped.
Cole, his voice thick with emotion, choked back a sob. "Lloyd!" he exclaimed, pulling his friend into a tight hug. The others quickly joined in, a flurry of relieved shouts and well-wishes filling the air.
Rumi, however, seemed to have a different reaction. With a delighted squeal, she launched herself across the room, a blur of blue fabric. Before anyone could react, she was practically tackling Lloyd in a bone-crushing hug.
"Lloyd!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with a mixture of joy and relief. "You're awake! I was so worried!"
Lloyd, momentarily stunned by the force of the hug, managed a weak cough. "Rumi, good to see you too," he wheezed, patting her awkwardly on the back. "But maybe a little... lighter next time?"
Rumi, oblivious to his discomfort, tightened her grip. "Never!" she declared, her voice muffled against his chest. The others watched the scene unfold with a mix of amusement and something else – a realization.
It had been clear for a while, but seeing Rumi's desperate hug brought it to the forefront of their minds. Rumi wasn't just Lloyd's friend; the way she clung to him, the relief evident in her eyes, spoke volumes. They were more than just friends.
A knowing smile spread across Nya's face. She nudged Kai, a playful glint in her eyes. "Looks like someone has a lot of explaining to do when Lloyd's fully recovered," she whispered.
Kai chuckled, a hint of understanding dawning on him. "Seems like it," he agreed. "Though, knowing Lloyd, he's probably just happy to have someone so... enthusiastic about his return."
As Rumi finally released Lloyd, who looked slightly worse for wear from the hug, a light blush crept up her cheeks. She stammered, avoiding everyone's gaze. "Well, uh, I'm just glad you're alright, Lloyd. We... we were all worried sick."
Lloyd, his voice still raspy, offered her a reassuring smile. "Thanks, Rumi. I appreciate it."
Relief continued to wash over the room like a calming wave. Lloyd's recovery was a turning point, a beacon of hope in the midst of darkness. However, Rumi's earlier exuberant hug seemed to have ignited a different kind of storm within her.
"How do I look?" she blurted out, her voice laced with sudden panic. Before anyone could answer, she shot out of the room like a blue rocket, disappearing into the hallway.
A beat of stunned silence followed. Then, the sound of a bathroom door slamming shut echoed through the room, punctuated by a muffled shriek.
"Oh no!" Rumi's voice, laced with horror, filtered through the door. "How could I possibly go to him looking like this?!"
A moment later, the bathroom door creaked open a sliver, revealing only a frantic eye peering out. "Pretend you didn't hear that!" Rumi hissed, her voice barely a whisper.
The others exchanged bewildered glances. This sudden shift in Rumi's demeanor was a complete departure from her earlier display of affection. A wave of amusement, mixed with a hint of concern, rippled through the group.
Nya, ever the voice of reason, tried to piece it all together. "So, Rumi is suddenly worried about her appearance right after hugging Lloyd?" she mused, a playful smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
Cole, scratching his head in confusion, chimed in, "Looks like someone has a crush and a major case of pre-boyfriend jitters."
Kai chuckled, nodding in agreement. "Seems like Rumi wants to make a good impression, now that Lloyd's awake." The realization brought a knowing smile to his face. He had always suspected a deeper connection between those two.
Jay, ever the optimist, bounced on the balls of his feet. "Well, this is exciting! Maybe when Lloyd's fully recovered, we can play a little matchmaker!"
Just then, the bathroom door flew open with a bang. Rumi, her face flushed and hair in disarray, emerged in a flurry of nervous energy. Her eyes darted around the room, searching for any sign that they had heard her earlier outburst.
"Alright, so, moving on!" she declared, her voice a touch too loud. "Anything new with the Overlord situation? Any evil plots we need to foil? Maybe a training session to get back in shape? Because I'm definitely in tip-top shape!"
Her forced enthusiasm was as transparent as her messy hair. The others, however, decided to play along, suppressing their smiles.
Nya, with a playful wink, stepped forward. "Actually, Rumi," she said gently, "maybe a little rest and relaxation would be a better idea. After all, you were quite worried about Lloyd, weren't you?"
Rumi's cheeks flushed even brighter. "Well, of course I was!" she stammered. "We were all worried! But now that he's awake, I'm perfectly fine! Totally fine! In fact, I'm bursting with energy! So much energy that..."
Her voice trailed off as she realized what she was about to say. The others, unable to contain themselves any longer, burst into laughter. Rumi, realizing she had been caught red-handed (or rather, red-cheeked), groaned and buried her face in her hands.
Lloyd, watching the scene unfold with a weak smile on his lips, found himself strangely warmed by the whole thing. Rumi's nervousness, her attempt to appear tough, it only endeared her to him further.
The laughter died down, leaving a warm afterglow in its wake. Rumi, mortified by her outburst, turned and fled the room in a flurry of mumbled apologies and self-deprecation.
"Totally useless," they could hear her mutter under her breath. "Can't even hug Lloyd without looking like a disaster. Maybe I should just—"
The door slammed shut with a bang, cutting off the rest of her tirade. The others exchanged worried glances. It was clear Rumi's earlier bravado was a facade masking a deeper insecurity.
The room fell silent again, the amusement replaced by a flicker of concern. Nya, ever the perceptive one, stepped forward. "Let's give her some space," she said softly. "She just needs a moment to... process everything."
Their attention shifted as the Monastery doors swung open, revealing a fiery redhead. Skylor, her brow furrowed in concern, marched towards Kai. "What happened here?" she asked, her voice sharp. "Is Lloyd alright?"
Kai, a hint of amusement lingering in his eyes, offered a reassuring smile. "Lloyd's awake, Skylor. He's a little worse for wear, but he's going to be okay. Rumi just... had a bit of a meltdown."
Skylor raised an eyebrow. "A meltdown? About what?"
Kai chuckled, explaining the scene that had just transpired. As he relayed the story of Rumi's sudden self-consciousness and her frantic attempt to hide it, Skylor couldn't help but let out a small smile.
"So," she said, a playful glint in her eyes, "it seems our little Rumi has a crush on Lloyd."
Kai grinned. "Seems that way, doesn't it? Though, judging by her reaction, she'd rather swallow a bucket of lava than admit it."
Skylor, ever the voice of reason, shook her head. "Rumi's a strong ninja," she said. "But everyone needs a little help sometimes, especially when it comes to matters of the heart."
Just then, the sound of sniffling echoed from down the hall. The others exchanged knowing glances. It seemed Rumi wasn't as good at hiding her emotions as she thought.
Nya sighed. "Maybe we should check on her," she suggested. "A little support from a friend might be just what she needs."
The others readily agreed. After all, they were a team, not just in battling evil, but in supporting each other through life's ups and downs, even the embarrassing ones. With a newfound purpose, they set off to find Rumi, ready to offer her a shoulder to cry on (or a bucket of ice cream, whichever she needed most).
Meanwhile, Skylor leaned in close to Kai, her voice barely a whisper. "So," she teased, "are you going to play matchmaker, or should I?"
Kai chuckled, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "Maybe," he replied, a playful twinkle in his eye, "we can both lend a hand. After all, who knows what kind of chaos love will bring to the Monastery?"
Skylor smirked, leaning into his embrace. "Chaos? Sounds like just another day in Ninjago." As they walked down the hall, ready to face whatever came next, a sense of hope and camaraderie filled the air. The future was uncertain, but they would face it together, stronger than ever before, and maybe, just maybe, with a little more love in their hearts.
