Chapter 47
" How.... long...have we been.... walking.... for?" Mia panted, leading Nelson up the path.
" Since.... the salamanders...... merged into..... our bracelets." Nelson replied.
Mia shot him a look.
" Not helping." She said.
" Sorry." Nelson offered her a weary smile, and Mia returned it.
" Human, pick up the pace!" Blackie called from the bag. " At this pace, we'll be at the top in...." Blackie paused. " One million years!"
Nelson and Mia exchanged a look.
" Um, Blackie? One million years is a bit too much!" Mia said.
" Well, see how far we are from the peak." Blackie pointed a black paw at the peak, and it was true. They really were far.
Discouragement hung heavy in the air, thick enough to rival the humidity clinging to their clothes. Mia clutched the straps of her backpack, the weight suddenly feeling like an anvil. Nelson, ever the optimist, tried to lighten the mood.
"Hey," he nudged Mia with his elbow, "at least the view keeps getting better, right?"
Mia squinted at the majestic mountain scape sprawling before them. Lush valleys dipped between snow-capped peaks that scraped the azure sky. It was breathtaking, but the breathtaking view did little to ease the ache in her legs or the gnawing emptiness in her stomach.
"Blackie," Mia called out, her voice weak, "is there any chance we could, you know, find a shortcut?"
A muffled sigh emanated from the backpack. "Negative," Blackie grumbled. "This mountain doesn't do shortcuts. Only the long and winding path to enlightenment... or the peak, whichever comes first."
Mia groaned. Enlightenment or a freaking peak, it felt like they were destined for neither at this rate. Nelson, sensing her despair, dug into his backpack and pulled out a granola bar.
"Here," he offered, breaking it in half. "A little fuel for the journey?"
Mia accepted the bar with a grateful smile. "Thanks, Nelson. You're always the voice of reason... even when the voice of reason is covered in sweat and begging for a nap."
Nelson chuckled. "We'll get there, Mia. We always do."
They continued their trek, their pace slow but steady. The silence, broken only by the rhythmic crunch of their boots on gravel and Blackie's occasional disgruntled mumble, stretched between them. Yet, a sense of companionship thrummed in the air, a silent promise that they would face whatever challenges awaited them, together.
As the sun began its descent, casting long shadows across the landscape, they finally reached a clearing. A small, weathered wooden signpost stood at the edge, its inscription barely visible under a layer of moss.
"'Trail Split,'" Mia read aloud. "'Left: Waterfall Trail. Right: Peak Trail.'"
She looked at Nelson, a question hanging in the air. They needed to reach the peak before nightfall, but the allure of a refreshing waterfall after their arduous journey was undeniable.
" Waterfall first. We need to rest." Nelson decided firmly, leaving no room for protests.
Mia, for a moment, considered arguing. The cool, refreshing spray of a waterfall sounded like a dream come true after their relentless climb. But seeing the exhaustion etched on Nelson's face – mirrored in her own reflection in a nearby stream – she knew he was right.
"Alright, waterfall it is," she conceded, her voice hoarse but accepting. "But after that, we push on for the peak. Deal?"
Nelson offered a tired smile, relief flickering in his eyes. "Deal. Lead the way, fearless leader."
Mia chuckled, mustering a bit of her usual bravado. Together, they followed the trail branching off to the left, the sound of rushing water growing louder with each step. The path narrowed, weaving through a dense forest canopy that filtered the afternoon sunlight into a dappled mosaic.
Blackie, seemingly sensing their change in direction, poked his head out of the backpack. "Finally! A change of scenery! Maybe this waterfall has a built-in hot spring or something, eh?"
Mia couldn't help but laugh. Blackie's optimism, misplaced as it might be, was a welcome source of amusement in their current state. As they rounded a bend in the path, the sound of rushing water reached a crescendo.
And then they saw it. The waterfall cascaded down a moss-covered rock face, its crystal-clear water crashing into a pool below. Mist swirled around the base, creating a shimmering veil that obscured the depths.
"Whoa," Nelson breathed, his voice filled with awe.
Mia couldn't speak. The sight was breathtaking, an oasis of cool serenity amidst the arduous climb. With a shared look of agreement, they dropped their backpacks and hurried towards the pool.
The water was icy cold at first, sending a jolt through their tired bodies. But as they submerged themselves further, a wave of relief washed over them. Muscles that had been screaming in protest relaxed, and the grime of the journey began to melt away.
They sat beneath the cascading water, letting the cool spray massage their aching shoulders. For a while, the only sound was the rush of the waterfall and the contented sigh escaping Blackie, who had somehow managed to wriggle out of the backpack and was now perched on a rock, basking in the mist.
"Alright, enough of this," Nelson declared after a while, his voice surprisingly energetic. "We need to get back on track. Waterfall recharged, peak next!"
" Noooooooooooooooooooooo!" Mia protested, wringing her hair and stepping out of the pond. Nelson handed her a towel, and she greatly accepted.
Mia's exaggerated wail echoed through the clearing, bouncing off the smooth, wet rock face of the waterfall. Nelson chuckled, shaking his head as he reached into his backpack and pulled out another granola bar.
"Come on, Mia," he teased, offering her the bar. "Don't tell me the mighty adventurer can't handle a little hike?"
Mia swatted playfully at his hand, accepting the granola bar nonetheless. "It's not the hike," she grumbled, taking a bite. "It's the fact that we just found a perfectly good spa treatment in the middle of nowhere, and you're dragging me away from it!"
Nelson grinned. "Look, I get it. This place is amazing. But remember, we came here for a reason, right? To reach the peak."
He gestured towards the sky where the sun, now tinged with orange and pink hues of sunset, was slowly dipping below the mountain peaks.
"We can't waste the entire afternoon here," he continued. "Besides, who knows? Maybe the view from the top will be even more spectacular than this waterfall."
Mia considered this. The cool water had indeed revitalized her, chasing away the exhaustion and replacing it with a renewed sense of purpose. She glanced back at the cascading waterfall, the setting sun casting a golden glow on the mist. It was tempting, the thought of lingering in this idyllic spot forever.
But then, a flicker of determination ignited in her eyes. Reaching the peak wasn't just about the destination; it was about the journey, the challenges they had overcome together.
"Alright, Nelson," she declared, her voice firm. "You win. Peak it is. But," she added with a mischievous glint in her eye, "if there's even a hint of a hot spring at the top, you're letting me soak in it for at least an hour."
Nelson burst into laughter. "Deal. Now, come on, let's get moving before it gets dark."
With newfound energy, they packed up their backpacks, Blackie grumbling all the while about leaving his "natural spa." They retraced their steps back to the trail split, the setting sun casting long shadows as they began their final ascent towards the peak. The path grew steeper, the air thinner, but Mia and Nelson pressed on, their laughter echoing through the mountains as they tackled the final challenge of their journey.

A triumphant shout erupted from Nelson as he rounded a bend in the trail, his eyes widening in surprise. Perched precariously on a rocky ledge, nestled amidst a cluster of snow-laden pines, was a steaming wooden hot tub.
"Mia! Look!" he yelled, waving his arm excitedly.
Mia, lagging behind due to a sudden and inexplicable surge of fatigue, barely managed a groan in response. The final stretch of the climb had taken more out of her than anticipated.
Nelson, ever the helpful soul, rushed back down the path and found Mia slumped against a rock, her face buried in her knees.
"Mia? You alright?" he asked, a note of concern in his voice.
Mia mumbled something unintelligible, then slowly lifted her head. Her eyes, however, remained closed. "Sunstroke... maybe... definitely... need... water..."
Nelson chuckled, relieved to see it wasn't something more serious. He fished out his water bottle and helped her take a few sips.
"Look," he said, pointing back up the path, "there's a... well, check this out."
Mia cracked open an eye, squinting in the fading light. Following Nelson's finger, she spotted the hot tub nestled amongst the trees. A gasp escaped her lips.
"A hot tub?" she croaked, her voice laced with disbelief.
Nelson grinned. "Looks like it. Seems like the universe heard your spa treatment prayers."
Mia, fueled by a sudden surge of energy born of desperation and hot tub dreams, scrambled to her feet. "We're... we're going there," she declared, her voice shaky but determined.
With renewed vigor, they reached the hot tub. The water, steaming and inviting, beckoned them after their arduous journey. Mia, without a second thought, flung off her backpack and dove headfirst into the warm embrace of the tub.
"Can we please just sleep here?!" she mumbled from beneath the water, a blissful sigh escaping her lips.
Nelson chuckled, shaking his head but unable to suppress a smile. He carefully lowered himself into the tub, sighing contentedly as the hot water soothed his aching muscles.
Blackie, who had been unusually quiet during the climb (perhaps conserving his energy for a potential hot spring protest), popped his head out of the backpack. One look at the steaming water, and his initial grumbling ceased.
"Hmm," he conceded, peering at Mia with a newfound respect. "Alright, human. You win this round. But don't expect me to share my personal spa secrets with anyone."
Mia, submerged in the hot tub, simply let out a contented gurgle in response. The view might not have been as spectacular as the waterfall, but for now, this little oasis perched halfway up the mountain was the perfect reward for their journey. They could worry about the peak tomorrow. Tonight, they would soak, relax, and savor the moment.
