Chapter 4

The rusty deck of the freighter creaked ominously beneath their feet as Mia and Nelson (still in his "Jake" form) crept towards the nearest hatch. The air hung heavy with a strange, metallic tang that made Mia wrinkle her nose.

"Are you sure about this?" Nelson whispered, his voice tight with nervousness. "This place creeps me out. What if there are bad guys, or worse, ghosts?"

Mia rolled her eyes playfully. "Relax, Jake. My wind power will alert me to any danger. Besides, ghosts are the least of our worries right now. We need to find Master Wu and that orb."

She reached for the rusty handle of the hatch, a determined glint in her eyes. Compared to Nelson's trepidation, Mia exuded a sense of controlled excitement. The mystery of the ship, the possibility of finding Master Wu, it all fueled a thrill-seeking spark within her.

"Alright," she said, pushing the hatch open with a groan. "Let's see what secrets this creepy ship holds."

They descended into the dark belly of the freighter, the only light coming from the faint glow emanating from Mia's outstretched hand. The silence was broken only by the rhythmic creaking of the ship and the sound of their own footsteps.

As they navigated through a maze of narrow corridors, Nelson kept glancing nervously over his shoulder. Every creak, every groan, sent shivers down his spine. Mia, however, seemed unfazed. She moved with a confident grace, her senses attuned to any changes in air pressure or sound that might indicate danger.

Suddenly, a faint hum reached their ears, growing louder as they rounded a corner. They came face-to-face with a large, pulsating orb of yellow energy, suspended in the center of a dimly lit room. The orb pulsed rhythmically, and within its swirling light, a faint figure flickered – Master Wu!

Mia gasped, a mixture of relief and concern washing over her. Master Wu was trapped within the orb, but at least he was alive!

Nelson, however, let out a yelp and stumbled back, bumping into a stack of crates. The sound echoed through the room, shattering the eerie silence.

" Ah, Mia. Nelson. How nice to see you." He said, his voice echoing in the room.

" Master Wu?" Nelson asked timidly.

" It is I, young Nelson of the Paper boys Resistance."

" Antonia's a girl!" Nelson pointed out.

" Apologies."

" Can we please get back on track?!" Mia interrupted before things could escalate. " Sensei, where are you?"

A figure stepped out of the shadows, revealing not Master Wu, but a tall, cloaked stranger. His face was obscured by a hood, but his voice held a faint, unsettling familiarity.

"Greetings, young ninjas," he said, his voice smooth and laced with amusement. "You seem to be under the impression you've stumbled upon Master Wu. A common mistake, I assure you."

Mia narrowed her eyes, her hand tightening around her shuriken. This wasn't Master Wu, but whoever this was, they knew them.

"Who are you?" she demanded, her voice unwavering despite the tremor of fear in her stomach.

The stranger chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "Someone who appreciates a good mystery, just like yourselves. But enough introductions. You see, the orb you seek..." he trailed off, gesturing towards the pulsating sphere with Master Wu trapped within, "it holds immense power. Power I intend to claim."

A surge of anger flared within Mia. This stranger was after the orb, after the power it held, and Master Wu was just a pawn in his game.

"Let him go!" she yelled, her voice echoing in the metallic chamber.

The stranger's smile widened, revealing a row of sharp teeth. "Not a chance, young ninja. But perhaps you can be of some use. You see, I require a specific key to unlock the full potential of the orb. A key guarded by the very same Master Wu you seek to save."

He tilted his head, his shadowed eyes seeming to pierce through Mia. "Tell me, ninjas, are you willing to make a deal?"

A meow unlike any other ripped through the tension-filled room. It wasn't the menacing screech of a Sky Raptor or the startled yelp of Nelson. It was a sassy, high-pitched meow that belonged distinctly to Blackie, Mia's talking cat.

Mia blinked, momentarily thrown off guard. Blackie? Here, on this creepy freighter, perched atop a stack of dusty crates in the center of the room? How in Ninjago...?

Blackie, fur puffed up in what could only be described as a dramatic pose, flicked her tail and glared at the cloaked stranger. "Well, well, well," she drawled, her voice dripping with disdain. "Look who decided to show their ugly mug."

The cloaked stranger, for the first time, seemed genuinely surprised. His shoulders slumped slightly, and a flicker of annoyance crossed his features. "A talking feline? This is... unexpected."

Nelson, ever the voice of reason (when it wasn't about ghosts), finally found his voice. "Blackie? But how...?"

"Long story, short attention span," Blackie cut him off, her emerald eyes narrowing at Nelson. "Suffice to say, I saw you all packing in a hurry and decided a little company wouldn't hurt. Besides," she purred, turning back to the stranger, "someone needs to keep these ninjas in line."

Mia, recovering from the initial shock, couldn't help but let out a small laugh. Blackie, always the drama queen, had a way of lightening even the most dire situations. But her presence also presented a new set of problems. How would they explain a talking cat to a potentially dangerous stranger, and how could Blackie possibly be helpful in this situation?

The cloaked stranger, however, seemed to be mulling over Blackie's words. A hint of a smile played on his lips, barely visible beneath the hood. "An interesting development," he mused. "Perhaps this feline... friend... of yours may prove more useful than I initially thought."

Blackie, however, wasn't finished. She leaped onto a nearby crate, regarding the stranger with narrowed eyes. "Listen here, pointy hat, you mess with my human, you mess with me. And let me tell you, claws come out when Blackie's hangry. Especially when I do this."

Mia's jaw dropped as Blackie, with a flick of her tail and a theatrical flourish, launched herself into the air. In a flash of emerald light, Blackie transformed. Standing in her place was no longer the sassy feline, but a duplicate of the cloaked stranger, complete with the dark robes and shadowed face.

The real stranger, caught off guard by this unexpected display of magic, sputtered in surprise. "What sorcery is this?" he roared, his voice cracking with a hint of fear.

Blackie, in her borrowed form, smirked. "Just a little feline hospitality," she purred, her voice surprisingly deep and masculine coming from the stranger's body.

Before the stranger could react further, Blackie, now in control of his body, marched him towards a nearby hatchway. The hatch led to a dark hold, presumably filled with seawater.

"Looks like someone's been a bad boy," Blackie drawled, her voice echoing from the stranger's body. With a swift movement, she (or rather, he) threw open the hatch and shoved the bewildered stranger, now yelling in muffled protest, into the churning water below.

A loud splash reverberated through the room, followed by a series of sputters and curses. Mia stared, speechless, as Blackie nonchalantly transformed back into her usual feline self.

"There," Blackie declared, flicking her tail with a satisfied air. "One creepy villain dealt with. Now, where were we?"

Nelson, still trying to process the whole talking cat morphing thing, simply gaped at Blackie. Mia, however, found herself grinning. Blackie's unexpected intervention had certainly thrown their situation into a chaotic loop, but it had also potentially eliminated a major threat.

"We were trying to free Master Wu," Mia finally managed to say, regaining her composure. "But it seems like you just made things a whole lot more... interesting."

Blackie hopped onto a nearby crate, her emerald eyes gleaming with mischief. "Interesting is my middle name, darling. Now, about that Master Wu fellow..."

Relief washed over Mia as Master Wu's voice filled the room, albeit faintly. "Here I am, young ones," he boomed, his voice echoing slightly. "No need to worry, I'm safe and sound."

Nelson, ever the skeptic, piped up, "Safe and sound? But you're in that... that glowy ball!"

A reassuring chuckle escaped from the orb. "Heavens no, child. This is merely a communication device, a clever invention I stumbled upon in my travels. It allows me to project my voice over vast distances."

"Travels?" Mia echoed, her curiosity piqued. "But where are you, Master Wu?"

Master Wu's laughter died down slightly, replaced by a hint of seriousness. He remained silent for a moment, then spoke in a cryptic tone. "Let's just say, I'm on a mission of my own, one that requires utmost secrecy."

Mia frowned. His answer was frustratingly vague, but she knew better than to press a Master of Spinjitzu. She needed a new plan. This orb, while a communication device, wouldn't help them free him.

Focusing her mind, Mia closed her eyes and reached out with her wind powers. She sensed a faint signature, the same energy emanating from the orb – Master Wu's essence. It was far, very far away, somewhere beyond the vast expanse of the ocean.

"We need to get you out of there, Master Wu," she declared, her voice filled with determination. "But it seems you're quite a distance away."

With a mischievous glint in her eyes, she turned towards Nelson. "Nelson, grab our bags."

Nelson, still bewildered by Blackie's earlier transformation, looked at her questioningly. Before he could ask, a strange whooshing sound filled the room. Two sleek backpacks materialized out of thin air, landing neatly at their feet, along with two large suitcases.

"Whoa!" Nelson exclaimed, his eyes wide with surprise. "How did—?"

Mia cut him off with a wink. "Let's just say I know bags. And how to levitate them. And how to transport them here."

A mischievous purr echoed from behind them. Blackie, perched atop a crate, simply smirked.

"Now," Mia continued, a determined glint in her eyes, "let's go for a flight. Not on a bird, but on something much faster – an airplane!"

The revelation caused Nelson's jaw to drop. Flying on an airplane? To another country, maybe even another continent, to find Master Wu? Their mission had taken a sharp turn from a creepy freighter to a global adventure.

With Blackie by their side (and a whole lot of questions left unanswered), Mia and Nelson were about to embark on a whirlwind journey to free their Master and unravel the mystery behind his disappearance. Buckle up, Ninjago, because these young heroes were about to take flight!
