Chapter 38

( Before I write anything, I'd just like for you to know that Mia and Nelson are humans.)

" Why does Master Wu love ping-pong balls so much?!" Mia huffed, ducking.

" Who knows?" Nelson replied. " But sure is exhausting." He used his shield to throw the balls off course, but that just turned the lasers on.

" Nelson, here!" Mia waved to a secluded corner. " We need to regroup!"

They scrambled towards the corner Mia indicated, a dead-end alcove barely large enough for them to squeeze into. Panting, they huddled together, the frantic red pulse of the laser beams illuminating their faces through the narrow opening.

"This is insane!" Nelson hissed, wiping sweat from his brow. "First waterfalls, now a laser ping-pong death maze?!"

Mia, catching her breath, tried to formulate a plan. "There has to be a way to deactivate this," she muttered, her eyes scanning the area for any control panels or switches. "But how?"

Suddenly, a faint whirring sound caught her attention. It seemed to be coming from above. Glancing upwards, Mia spotted a small grate partially obscured by dust and cobwebs.

"Nelson," she whispered, pointing towards the grate. "Maybe the controls are up there?"

Nelson followed her gaze, his eyes widening in understanding. "Good thinking! But how do we reach it?"

Thinking for a moment, Mia then looked at her arms. " We do something insane."

Nelson stared at her, then a grin slowly spread across his own face. "You sure this isn't some crazy dream I'm having?"

Mia winked. "Maybe. But it's the only crazy plan we have right now. Trust me?"

Nelson nodded eagerly. "With every crazy bone in my body!"

Smiling, Mia turned and used her wind powers to create..... steps.

"Steps?" Nelson squeaked, his voice a mix of awe and disbelief. "Seriously, Mia? That's your plan?"

Mia grabbed his hand, her grip firm and determined. "Yep. Now, come on!" She wasted no time, bounding towards the wind-steps with surprising agility.

Nelson, still hesitant, glanced at the menacing red laser beams crisscrossing the space before them. "You sure this'll work?!" he yelled, his voice straining over the whirring of the lasers.

"Only one way to find out!" Mia yelled back, already scaling the steps with surprising ease.

With a deep breath, Nelson took a running leap, aiming for the bottom step. The first laser beam swiped past his head with an ear-splitting hum as he landed, feeling a sudden rush of adrenaline course through him. He quickly clambered onto the next step, the wind offering a slight cushion against the unforgiving wall.

Mia, already on the fourth step, turned her head slightly. "See? Easy!" she called out, her voice barely audible over the din. Easy, she thought with a sardonic smile plastered on her face as her heart hammered against her ribs.

Their ascent was a precarious dance. The laser beams seemed to have a mind of their own, shifting their patterns unpredictably. Nelson, using his shield as a makeshift deflector, narrowly dodged a barrage of red light, his breaths coming in ragged gasps.

"Mia, can't we just... go slower?" he panted, his voice strained. "My muscles are screaming!"

"Not an option!" Mia yelled back, her voice taut with exertion. "Almost there!"

She reached the final step, her arm outstretched towards the grate. With a final burst of effort, she used her wind power to dislodge the rusty grate, sending a shower of dust and cobwebs raining down on them.

Nelson finally scrambled onto the last step, collapsing onto the dusty floor with a groan. "I... need... water... and therapy."

Mia, panting heavily, leaned against the wall, her shoulders slumping with relief. They had made it – they were out of the death maze. Taking a moment to catch her breath, she peered through the grate.

The space beyond was dark, a faint blue glow emanating from somewhere deeper inside. "See that light?" she asked Nelson, pointing towards the glow. "Maybe that's the control panel."

Nelson, still catching his breath, managed a weak nod. "Great. More exploration... just what I needed after that laser ping-pong nightmare."

Mia chuckled, a shaky sound. "It could be worse," she said, offering him a hand to help him up. "We could still be stuck in that web."

Picking themselves up, they brushed dust and cobwebs from their clothes. "Alright," Mia declared, a determined glint in her eyes. "Let's go find that control panel and shut down this crazy laser show before we end up looking like pincushions."

Nelson, though exhausted, managed a grin. "Lead the way, fearless leader."

Together, they squeezed through the dusty grate, crawling into the dimly lit tunnel beyond. The blue glow seemed to beckon them forward, a promise of a way out of this bizarre and dangerous labyrinth.

The tunnel twisted and turned, the air growing stale and thick with dust. As they crawled, they stumbled upon strange, abandoned equipment – rusty levers, broken control panels, and half-assembled contraptions with blinking lights. It was as if someone had started building an elaborate theme park, then given up halfway through.

"This place is giving me the creeps," Nelson muttered, his voice a whisper in the darkness. "It's like... a graveyard for failed amusement rides."

Mia shivered, the words echoing her own unease. "Let's just hope that graveyard doesn't include us."

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the tunnel opened into a small cavern. In the center of the cavern, bathed in the same blue light they had been following, stood a massive control panel. It was a monstrosity of blinking lights, levers, and dials, an outlandish contraption straight out of a mad scientist's dream.

"Well," Mia muttered, staring at the control panel with a mix of apprehension and relief. "Looks like we found the source of the laser-ping-pong fun."

Nelson, cautiously approaching the panel, scanned the rows of switches and dials. "Now, the question is... which one shuts it down?" He reached out a tentative finger towards a blinking red lever, then hesitated.

"Press the green button," a voice in their heads said, the command laced with a hint of amusement.

Mia glanced at Nelson, her eyes wide with alarm. "Did... did you hear that?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the faint hum of the machinery.

Nelson, his face pale, nodded frantically. "Yeah, I heard it too. What was that?"

The voice, neither male nor female, seemed to emanate from everywhere and nowhere at once. It was as if the cavern itself was speaking, its tone playful yet unsettling.

Mia gripped the hilt of her katana, her fingers tingling with nervous energy. "We don't know," she replied, her voice tight. "But I don't trust it."

The control panel, with its blinking lights and cryptic symbols, seemed even more menacing now. The green button the voice had mentioned stood out amidst the chaos, a glowing emerald beacon. Was it the answer to their predicament, or a trap waiting to be sprung?

Nelson, ever the pragmatist, cautiously scanned the control panel. "We can't just stand here all day," he muttered. "Maybe it's a bluff. Or maybe..."

He didn't finish the sentence. The cavern lights flickered momentarily, then plunged into darkness. The only source of illumination came from the control panel, its blinking lights casting an eerie glow on their faces.

A new wave of panic surged through Mia. Without light, navigating the laser maze would be suicide. They were trapped, their only hope seemingly resting on the mysterious voice's instructions.

"Mia," Nelson whispered, his voice tight with fear. "What do we do?"

Mia swallowed hard, her mind racing. She knew trusting a disembodied voice was risky, but the thought of facing the lasers in the dark was even more terrifying. Taking a deep breath, she forced her voice to remain steady.

"Alright," she declared, her voice echoing in the darkness. "Let's see what happens."

Slowly, tentatively, she reached out and pressed the green button.

The control panel erupted in a symphony of flashing lights and whirring sounds. For a moment, nothing happened. Then, a series of clicks echoed through the cavern, followed by a satisfying groan of machinery powering down.

Tentatively, a sliver of light peeked through the opening they had crawled through. The laser maze was silent, the red beams replaced by an unsettling darkness.

Mia and Nelson exchanged a surprised look. The voice, it seemed, had been right.

"Well," Nelson said, his voice still shaky but laced with a hint of relief. "That was... unexpected."

Mia, her heart still pounding, nodded in agreement. "It seems we have a... secret admirer... in this creepy cavern."

The voice, however, remained silent. Whether it was a friend or foe, a helpful guide or a mischievous trickster, they had no way of knowing. But one thing was certain – their journey through the secret passage was far from over.

With a newfound sense of caution, they crept back towards the opening, the faint light from the outside world a beacon of hope. They had survived the laser maze, but what other challenges awaited them in the depths of this strange and mysterious place? Only time, and the whispers in the dark, would tell.
