Chapter 33
Mia watched in amusement as Nelson, emboldened by a newfound determination (or perhaps the urgent need to deflect his own unease), approached the rock formation. He puffed out his chest, mimicking Master Wu's signature scowl.
"Alright, rock-Wu," he began, his voice echoing in the vast cavern. "We know you're not the real Master Wu, so spill it. What are you doing here, impersonating a legendary ninja master in a damp cave? Are you some kind of... petrified groupie?"
Mia snorted, trying to stifle a laugh. Nelson, ever the comedian, even in the face of creepy cave doppelgangers.
The rock formation, of course, remained stubbornly silent. The only response was the relentless roar of the waterfall, which sounded suspiciously like stifled laughter to Nelson's increasingly paranoid ears.
"Alright, rock-dude," he continued, his voice booming through the cavern, "spill it. What gives? You some kind of ancient guardian or just a really convincing pebble?"
Undeterred, Nelson continued his interrogation. "Look, rock-dude," he pressed on, tapping the staff-like stalactite with a finger. "We get it. You admire Master Wu. We all do! But impersonating him in a dark cave is just creepy. It's like... method acting gone wrong. Did you at least get permission to use his likeness? Copyright infringement is a serious offense, you know!"
Mia's laughter bubbled over, echoing eerily in the damp cavern. Nelson, emboldened by her amusement, decided to take it a step further.
"Or," he continued, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "are you one of Wu's secret training exercises? Some kind of bizarre test of mental fortitude? Because let me tell you, rock-Wu, you're giving me the heebie-jeebies. If this is supposed to be scary, you need to work on your material. Maybe some spooky sound effects? A flickering light? A disembodied voice whispering my deepest fears?"
He paused, his eyes narrowing at the rock formation. "Wait a minute," he said, a sudden realization dawning on him. "Is that it? Are you trying to mess with us? Because if that's the case, rock-Wu, you win. You've successfully freaked me out."
"First of all," Nelson continued, poking the rock formation with a finger (which promptly bounced harmlessly off the cold stone), "it's a bit rude to impersonate a legendary ninja master, especially one who could probably crush you into pebbles with his pinky finger."
Mia snorted, a welcome burst of laughter in the tense atmosphere. Nelson, emboldened by her amusement, decided to press on.
"Second," he declared, puffing out his chest (which looked rather comical considering he was still a spectral copy of Master Wu), "if you're going to trick unsuspecting ninja into visiting, the least you could do is offer some refreshments. Maybe some mystical spring water or a plate of enlightenment cookies?"
He cast a dramatic glance around the cavern. "Seriously, not a single fortune cookie in sight? This place has terrible hospitality standards for a fake Master Wu."
Mia doubled over in laughter, tears welling up in her eyes. Nelson, despite his bravado, couldn't help but crack a smile. Maybe a little humor was just what they needed to break the tension in this unsettling cave.
"Alright, alright," Nelson conceded, wiping a tear from his eye. "You got me, rock-Wu. You're a pretty good impersonator. But seriously, can you at least give us a hint? Where can we find the real Master Wu?"
He held his breath, waiting for some sign of acknowledgement. The rock formation, however, remained silent, its watery beard glistening in the dim light. Nelson sighed dramatically.
"Fine," he muttered, crossing his arms. "Be that way. But don't come crying to me when you get bored standing here all by yourself."
"You know," Mia finally gasped between giggles, "I think we're giving this rock a bit too much credit. Maybe it's just... a rock."
Ignoring Mia's comment, Nelson gave a final playful glare at the rock formation.
"So," he said, "any other bright ideas before we become permanent residents of the creepy cave with the talkative rock?"
Mia, wiping away the last of her tears, couldn't help but grin. "Actually, I think I do," she said. "But it might involve a little water manipulation and a whole lot of hoping this rock formation doesn't come to life and chase us out."
Nelson turned to the rocks again. "Enlighten me, oh wise rock sage," Nelson declared, bowing sarcastically in front of the formation. "Do your stony lips hold the secrets of the missing ninja master or are you just a silent judge in this bizarre cave pageant?"
Mia, still giggling at Nelson's antics, nudged him with her elbow. "Maybe we should just give up on the dramatic speeches and focus on, you know, finding another way out of here."
Just then, a low rumble echoed through the cavern, distinct from the roar of the waterfall. The air grew thick with a musky odor, sending shivers down Nelson's spine. He whipped around, his bravado momentarily forgotten.
"What was that?" he whispered, his voice tight with apprehension.
A slithering sound followed the rumble, growing louder by the second. Mia's eyes darted towards the darkness behind the waterfall, a knot of dread forming in her stomach.
Suddenly, a monstrous head emerged from the cascading water, its glistening scales reflecting the dim light. Two glowing yellow eyes locked onto them, sending a jolt of terror through Mia and Nelson.
It was a snake. A very, very large snake.
Nelson's carefully constructed facade crumbled completely. He let out a high-pitched shriek that would make a banshee proud, leaping back and tripping over a stray rock.
Mia, on the other hand, reacted with a different kind of primal terror.
"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!" she screamed, her voice reaching an octave previously unknown to humankind. "It's so biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig!" she shrieked, punctuating each word with a wild hand gesture that nearly knocked Nelson over again.
The giant serpent, seemingly unfazed by their hysterics, continued its slow, sinuous emergence from the waterfall. Its body, thick as a tree trunk, coiled on the cavern floor, its scales glinting a menacing emerald green.
Nelson, looking around at the surroundings, found a small opening.
" Mia! This way!" Nelson yelled, pointing to the hole.
Mia, catching his drift, wasted no time running to the hole while avoiding the tail of the large serpent.
But, just as they thought they had escaped, the serpent rose once more in front of them.
" AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Mia yelled, shielding her face. The serpent, for a brief moment, recoiled at the sound. This gave Nelson an idea.
" Mia, keep yelling!" Nelson called.
Mia, once again catching his drift, nodded.
" HEY, SNAKE?" Mia yelled, " WHAT SHOULD I CALL YOU? BEOTHERMIE? BERNIE? ZANE? PIXAL?"
The cavern echoed with Mia's bizarre attempts at naming the colossal serpent. Nelson, meanwhile, rummaged through his pockets, a determined glint in his eyes.
"Come on, come on," he muttered under his breath, "where'd I put that emergency candy stash?"
The giant snake, momentarily stunned by this unexpected barrage of noise, tilted its massive head, its forked tongue flicking in and out curiously. Mia, peeking through her fingers, saw the momentary hesitation and pressed on with renewed vigor.
"MR. SNUGGLES? NO? HOW ABOUT FRIEND? HI FRIEND!"
The serpent remained unfazed by the nonsensical names, but its initial aggression seemed to wane. Nelson, finally triumphant, pulled out a crumpled candy wrapper – a testament to his ever-prepared nature. Inside, nestled amongst the sugary remnants, were a few brightly colored jellybeans.
With a desperate prayer that his plan would work, Nelson tossed the jellybeans towards the serpent. The glistening candies landed with soft plops on the cavern floor, a stark contrast to the damp stone and the snake's emerald scales.
The serpent's eyes, previously focused on Mia, shifted towards the unexpected offering. It lowered its head, sniffing cautiously at the colorful treats. Its long tongue darted out, snatching a single jellybean and flicking it into its mouth.
A moment of silence followed. Then, to Mia and Nelson's utter astonishment, the serpent opened its massive maw and let out a rumbling... gurgle. It almost sounded like... appreciation?
Emboldened by this unexpected development, Nelson, still in his Wu form, puffed out his chest and spoke in a booming voice. "Mighty serpent! We come in peace, seeking the lost ninja Master Wu. Perhaps you, in your infinite wisdom, could guide us on our quest?"
The serpent, its yellow eyes fixed on the remaining jellybeans, didn't respond with words. However, it did something even more unexpected. It nudged its massive head towards the narrow opening Nelson had spotted earlier.
Mia and Nelson exchanged bewildered glances. Was the serpent... pointing them in the right direction? Had their bizarre strategy of yelling and jellybeans actually worked?
Before they could dwell on their disbelief, a low thrumming sound filled the cavern. The ground trembled slightly, and a section of the wall near the opening began to glow with an ethereal light.
The serpent, with a final rumbling gurgle, slithered back into the waterfall, its emerald form disappearing behind the cascading water.
Mia and Nelson, hearts still hammering in their chests, cautiously approached the glowing section of the wall. The light pulsed with a soft, inviting warmth, beckoning them forward.
"Well," Nelson said, his voice tinged with nervous excitement, "it looks like we have a new path to explore. Thanks for the... uh... guidance, Mr. Gigantic Snake?"
Mia, a wide grin replacing her earlier terror, nudged him playfully. "Let's just hope this new path leads us to Master Wu, and not another giant talking rock... or a cave full of hungry snakes with a sweet tooth."
With a shared look of determination, they stepped through the glowing opening, the strange encounter with the massive serpent leaving them with a newfound appreciation for jellybeans and the bizarre logic of the Ninjago underworld.
