Chapter 32
" What's going on?!" Mia shouted as she ducked from an arrow.
" I don't know!" Nelson replied, jumping on the rock formations at the side of the cave.
" What's happening is lasers! Lots of lasers!" Blackie meowed, attempting to catch one.
" Watch out for the spikes!" Mia swiftly caught her cat and jumped on a rock bridge, surrounded by lava.
" Thanks!" Blackie jumped out of Mia's arms and resumed trying to dodge the lasers, while also trying to catch one.
"Mia, left!" Nelson shouted, his voice hoarse from exertion. He lunged past her, his katana a blur as he parried a volley of arrows.
Mia twisted, narrowly avoiding a spiked log that slammed into the spot where she had just been standing. "Thanks!" she yelled back, her own hand a blur as she threw a shuriken, disarming a hidden crossbow trap.
Blackie yowled in fury, his emerald eyes blazing as he arched his back and hissed at a grotesque stone gargoyle that lunged at him from the shadows. With a well-placed swipe of his paw, he sent the gargoyle tumbling into a pit, its grotesque laughter echoing eerily.
They ran, dodged, and fought with a desperate grace, their movements honed by years of ninja training. Yet, the cave seemed to anticipate their every move. The floor lurched beneath their feet, opening into chasms one moment and reforming the next. The air crackled with unseen energy, a constant reminder of the malevolent force behind these deadly traps.
"We can't keep this up forever!" Mia screamed, her voice barely audible over the din of chaos. "We need a plan!"
Nelson, skidding to a halt beside her, took a ragged breath. "Plan?" he wheezed, his face streaked with dust and sweat. "Right now, staying alive feels like enough of a plan!"
" Nelson! Duck!" Mia jumped on Nelson's body, narrowly avoiding a sharp sword with its tip on fire.
" Thanks!" Nelson heaved, looking at the cave.
Just when it seemed it couldn't get any worse, it did. Ping pong balls were flying everywhere, and Nelson and Mia had to crawl on all fours to get out of that obstacle.
" Master Wu didn't say it would be like this!" Mia sighed, standing up a d clutching her stomach.
" Yeah, but he did say it would be difficult!" Nelson replied, shielding her from the arrows.
" Your dear master underestimated the danger here! How can anyone survive?!" Blackie howled.
" He's a ninja master. He basically knows EVERYTHING and EVERYONE. Of course he can easily pass through." Mia replied.
Then, the orb ( AKA Wu) appeared, and floated to the kids, his spectral face filled with worry.
" Where are the others?" He asked, scanning the cave. " Why are they not helping you?"
Mia and Nelson exchanged a look.
"We... Ahem... came by ourselves." Mia whispered.
The orb pulsed with a worried glow. "By yourselves?" Wu boomed, his voice echoing through the cavern. "But why? This is no place for young ninja, such as yourselves!"
Mia straightened, a fierce protectiveness rising within her. "We had to come, Master Wu. We couldn't just sit around while you were trapped here."
Nelson nodded vigorously, his face smudged with dust but his eyes resolute. "We might not be the most experienced ninja, but we've learned from the best. We can handle ourselves."
Blackie, ever the pragmatist, let out a disgruntled meow. "Speak for yourselves. This place is crawling with booby traps and flaming swords! It's a death trap!"
The orb flickered, a hint of amusement flickering across Wu's spectral features. "Perhaps your feline companion has a point," he conceded. "But your courage and determination are admirable, young ones. You remind me of myself at your age."
Mia couldn't help but puff out her chest a little at the praise. Nelson, ever the jokester, grinned. "So, are you saying we're basically mini Wu's now?"
Wu chuckled, a warm, rumbling sound that echoed through the cave. "Perhaps not quite 'mini Wu's,' Nelson. But you do possess the potential for greatness. Now, enough of this banter. You have a waterfall to reach, and judging by the state of you three, time is of the essence."
He gestured towards the shimmering shard embedded in the wall, the one that had led them through the treacherous passage. "The trail of creation energy continues. It will guide you to the waterfall and me, and hopefully, to safety."
A new shard pulsed to life beside the first, forming a clear path out of the darkness. Relief washed over Mia, the tension draining from her shoulders.
"Thank you, Master Wu," she said sincerely. "We won't let you down."
With a determined nod, Nelson adjusted his grip on his katana. Blackie, seemingly accepting the situation, arched his back and brushed against Mia's leg, a silent show of support.
Following the trail of shimmering shards, they ventured deeper into the cave, the dangers they had just faced a stark reminder of the challenges that still lay ahead. But with a renewed sense of purpose and the guidance of their master, they were prepared to face whatever awaited them. They were ninja, after all, and they wouldn't rest until they had brought Master Wu home.
