Chapter 28

The sterile white walls of the hospital room seemed to recede as Cole finally sat up, the dull ache in his side a mere afterthought. A wave of relief washed over him. Discharged. He was finally going home.

Dr. Tomas, a wiry man with a perpetually worried expression, bustled in, a clipboard clutched in his hand. "Ah, Mr. Cole. Feeling much better, I see."

Cole stretched, a groan escaping his lips. "Much better than yesterday, Doc. Thanks to you and everyone here."

Dr. Tomas smiled, a rare sight that crinkled the corners of his eyes. "Glad to hear it. We ran some additional tests, and everything seems to be in order. Your heart rate, while elevated during the attack, appears to be a result of... well, let's just say your body was under a lot of stress."

Cole chuckled. "You could say that. Fighting giant stone warriors tends to do that to a guy."

The doctor gave him a knowing look. "Indeed. Now, before you head off on any more adventures, I need you to take it easy for a few days. Rest, no strenuous activity."

Cole winced. "Rest? Easy? You're asking a ninja to do the impossible, Doc."

"Think of it as training for the next battle," Dr. Tomas said with a wink. "But seriously, Mr. Cole, your body needs time to recover. Disobeying doctor's orders is a surefire way to land back here faster than you can say 'Spinjitzu.'"

Cole couldn't help but grin. "Alright, alright. I'll take it easy. For a few days."

With a final set of instructions and a pat on the back, Dr. Tomas ushered in Vania, who had been waiting impatiently outside. As soon as the door closed behind him, she rushed to Cole's side, her eyes filled with concern and relief.

"Cole!" she exclaimed, enveloping him in a tight hug. "You're finally getting out of here! I was starting to think they were going to make you a permanent resident."

Cole laughed, wincing slightly at the pressure on his side. "Easy there, Princess. Doc says I need to take it easy, remember?"

Vania pulled back, her cheeks dusted with a faint blush. "Right. Sorry."

But the worry in her eyes hadn't completely vanished. She studied him intently, searching for any lingering signs of weakness.

"Are you really alright, Cole? They didn't say..." Her voice trailed off, unspoken questions hanging in the air.

Cole reached up, gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "I'm fine, Vania. Just a little bruised, but nothing a few days of rest and your delicious cooking can't fix."

A soft smile touched Vania's lips. "That's good to hear. Because Ninjago needs you, Cole. And so do I."

Her words hung heavy in the air, carrying a deeper meaning that sent a warmth through Cole. He squeezed her hand gently.

"Don't worry, Vania," he said, his voice low and sincere. "I'm not going anywhere. Not for long."

As they walked out of the hospital hand-in-hand, the afternoon sun casting long shadows across their path, a new resolve settled within them. Ninjago wasn't safe yet, and there were battles to be fought. But they would face them together, stronger than ever, bound by friendship, loyalty, and perhaps, something more.

The sterile hospital hallway echoed with the muffled snickers of Jay and Kai, their laughter barely contained behind the palms of their hands. Poking out from behind a corner, they held their phones aloft, a mischievous glint in their eyes.

"Did you get that whole lovey-dovey goodbye, Kai?" Jay whispered, his voice choked with laughter.

Kai, his shoulders shaking with barely suppressed mirth, peeked at the screen. "Every gooey, hand-holding second of it. Cole's gonna kill us when he sees this."

On the screen, a replay of Cole and Vania's farewell played out. Vania's concerned gaze, Cole's reassuring touch – it was all captured in glorious, embarrassing detail.

"Maybe we should add some sappy music," Jay suggested, his eyes twinkling with devilment. He scrolled through his phone, searching for the perfect soundtrack.

"Nah," Kai chuckled. "The look on Cole's face when he sees this is music enough."

Just then, the door to the hospital swung open again, revealing the unsuspecting couple stepping out. Vania, her hand tucked in Cole's arm, leaned her head against his shoulder, a picture of contentment.

Jay and Kai, caught red-handed, froze. Their laughter died in their throats, replaced by a look of sheepish guilt.

Cole, oblivious to their predicament, stopped short, his brow furrowed in confusion. "Uh, guys? What are you doing here?"

"Oh, you know," Jay drawled, his voice dripping with mock innocence. "Just eavesdropping on your... motivational pep talk for Cole's recovery."

Cole, finally catching on, sputtered in protest. "Motivational pep talk? It was... it was nothing like that!"

Jay, unable to hold back any longer, burst out laughing. Kai, after a valiant attempt at maintaining his composure, joined in. The hallway echoed with their guffaws, the tension broken.

Vania nudged Cole playfully. "See? A little laughter is the best medicine."

Cole, despite himself, couldn't help but grin. He shook his head at his friends, a mixture of amusement and exasperation in his eyes.

"Alright, alright, you got me. But you owe me one, you two."

Wiping tears from his eyes from laughing so hard, Jay offered a mock salute. "Consider it a debt repaid, Cole. Now, come on. Let's get you home before you get kidnapped by lovesick princesses again."

Vania swatted him playfully on the arm. "Hey! There's nothing wrong with a little affection."

As they walked out of the hospital ( again), Cole and Vania side-by-side, with Jay and Kai trailing behind, the playful banter and laughter filled the air. The future might be uncertain, but for now, they had each other, their friendship a beacon of light in the face of looming threats. And of course, they had the ever-present promise of Jay's blackmail material to keep things interesting.

Cole groaned, staring up at the familiar white ceiling of his room in the Monastery. A wave of dizziness washed over him as he tried to sit up, only to find himself firmly restrained. He was strapped to the bed – not with ropes, thankfully, but with thick, fluffy white blankets. They were surprisingly snug, but also incredibly frustrating.

"Vania?" he called out, his voice hoarse.

A chuckle came from the doorway. There stood Vania, a tray in her hands, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Trying to escape already, are we, patient?"

Cole flushed. "Escape? No way! I'm just... checking on my flexibility."

Vania raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. "Right. Because last I checked, flexibility training doesn't involve trying to levitate off the bed."

She walked over and set the tray down on the bedside table. It was piled high with steaming bowls and a plate of golden brown cookies. The aroma of chicken noodle soup filled the air, making Cole's stomach rumble.

"See?" Vania continued, a playful smile on her lips. "Doctor's orders: complete and utter rest. No training, no heroics, just good food and plenty of sleep."

Cole sighed dramatically. "But Vania, I feel fine! A little sore, sure, but I could take on a whole army of Stone Warriors right now!"

Vania's smile faltered for a moment, a flicker of worry crossing her eyes. "Cole, please. Remember what Dr. Tomas said. Your body needs time to heal. Besides," she added, her voice softening, "we'll need you at your best for whatever this Stone- Warrior thing is all about."

Cole couldn't deny the logic in her words. He slumped back against the pillows, a defeated sigh escaping his lips. "Alright, alright. You win, Princess. But at least untie me from this marshmallow torture device."

Vania laughed, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Marshmallow torture device? Seems a bit dramatic, don't you think?"

She knelt beside the bed, her touch gentle as she began to loosen the blankets one by one. "But fine. On one condition."

"What condition?" Cole grumbled, feeling slightly sheepish about his over-the-top theatrics.

Vania leaned in close, a playful glint in her eyes. "You promise to be a good patient and eat all your soup."

Cole couldn't help but return her smile. "Deal."

As Vania helped him sit up, a comfortable warmth spread through him. It wasn't just the fluffy blankets or the delicious-smelling soup. It was the feeling of being cared for, of knowing someone had his back, even when he was forced into a state of forced relaxation.

Maybe, Cole thought, a few days of enforced rest wouldn't be so bad after all. He might even enjoy the novelty of being pampered, a rare luxury for a ninja on a constant mission. Besides, he had a feeling there'd be plenty of adventures waiting for him once he was back on his feet. And with Vania by his side, he knew he could face anything.

The door creaked open, revealing a flurry of activity. Jay, Pixal, Nya, Lloyd, and Zane all piled into the room, their voices buzzing with excitement.

"Cole, you won't believe what we just found!" Jay declared, bursting in first. "A hidden passage under the Monastery leading to... well, we're not exactly sure yet, but it's definitely something!"

Cole, still bundled in his fluffy blanket prison, couldn't help but grin. "Sounds like you guys had an adventure of your own while I was stuck here playing invalid."

Nya nudged his arm playfully. "Don't worry, you'll get your turn soon enough. But first, things got a little... weird back at the Bounty."

Kai, who had been unusually quiet, finally spoke up. "Yeah, about that..." He scratched the back of his head sheepishly. "I had this... really weird dream last night."

Vania, perched on the edge of Cole's bed, raised an eyebrow. "A dream, huh? What was it about?"

A sheepish grin spread across Kai's face. "Well, we were all fighting each other. You, Cole, Nya, Lloyd – everyone! But the strangest part was..." He paused dramatically, relishing the moment. "We were fighting against Mia and Nelson, and some other people we didn't recognize!"

Jay, unable to contain himself any longer, burst out laughing. "And the best part! Mia was tackling us all by ourselves! Never knew my sis had it in her!"

Cole's head snapped towards Jay, a bewildered expression on his face. "Tackling us? What are you talking about?"

Pixal, ever the logical one, interjected. "Intriguing. Perhaps this dream is connected to the recent events involving the Stone Warriors and the dream-corruption phenomenon."

Zane, his brow furrowed in thought, chimed in. "Indeed. Perhaps the dream offers a glimpse into a potential future threat. Or perhaps..."

He trailed off, his usual stoicism replaced by a flicker of amusement. "Perhaps it served as a reminder of a certain someone's susceptibility to being surprised by lightning attacks."

Jay's laughter died down, replaced by a sputter of indignation. "Hey! It was just a dream!"

Nya, stifling a smile, nudged him playfully. "Sure, Jay. Just a dream."

The room erupted in good-natured laughter. Despite the lingering mystery of the dream and the threat of the Stone Warriors, a sense of camaraderie and lightheartedness filled the air. They were ninjas, after all, and they faced every challenge, both real and imagined, together. And who knows, maybe a little pink Spinjitzu wouldn't hurt after all.
