Chapter 20 ( Sorry, this is the REAL chapter 20)
Mia was nervously sitting in a chair as Nelson ( still in his Beatruce state of mind) was being examined by a kind doctor named Doctor Ingalls
" So you're telling me he's eaten ten scoops of ice cream and a strange burger?" Doctor Ingalls asked, listening to Nelson's heart.
Mia gulped and nodded.
" Yes, ma'am."
Doctor Ingalls, a woman with kind eyes and a reassuring smile, finished listening to Nelson's (or Beatruce, depends on who you asked) heart with her stethoscope. She placed it back on the stand beside her desk and turned towards Nelson, who was perched on the examination table, fidgeting and humming a nonsensical tune.
"Alright, Beatruce," Dr. Ingalls said with a gentle chuckle, "it seems your heart is doing just fine. Now, let's see how your tummy feels. Can you lie down flat on your back for me?"
Nelson, ever the eager participant when candy was involved (or at least, the promise of candy), readily complied. He flopped down on the table, his arms and legs akimbo.
Dr. Ingalls washed her hands and then dried them meticulously with a paper towel. With a practiced gentleness, lifted his shirt and placed her warm palms flat on Nelson's stomach, just below his ribs. She began by lightly pressing down with a few fingertips, feeling for any unusual tenderness or lumps.
"Does that hurt anywhere, Beatruce?" she asked, her voice calm and soothing.
Nelson, momentarily distracted from his humming, shook his head enthusiastically. "Nope! Just feels like... squishy ice cream."
Dr. Ingalls chuckled again. She then used both hands, placing them side-by-side on Nelson's abdomen. She gently pressed down with moderate pressure, slowly moving her hands from his upper abdomen down towards his navel and then across his lower abdomen. As she did so, she was carefully feeling for any areas of resistance or tightness in Nelson's muscles, which could indicate inflammation or irritation.
"How about here, Beatruce? Does this feel different?" she asked, pressing lightly on his lower right quadrant.
Nelson scrunched up his face and let out a small yelp. "Ooh, kinda ticklish!"
Dr. Ingalls smiled. "Alright, that's good. No sharp pains, just a little tickle. Now, can you take a deep breath in for me, Beatruce?"
Nelson puffed out his chest, filling his lungs with air. Dr. Ingalls felt his abdomen rise and fall beneath her hands, paying close attention to any areas that seemed to move differently or bulge outward more than others.
"Alright, Beatruce, you can breathe normally now," Dr. Ingalls said, removing her hands. She picked up a tongue depressor from the tray beside her and gently tapped it against Nelson's knee. His leg jerked up reflexively, then fell limp again.
"Good reflexes," Dr. Ingalls murmured, making a note on her clipboard. She gave Nelson a warm smile. "Well, Beatruce, we might need to run more tests, but then again, you have an elemental power, so the machines might not pick up what's bothering your stomach."
Mia's heart skipped a beat. Elemental power? Did Dr. Ingalls know? She blurted out the question that had been burning on her tongue, "Elemental power? What kind?"
Dr. Ingalls raised an eyebrow, her smile fading slightly. She looked at Mia with a newfound curiosity. "Well," she said, her voice losing its earlier warmth, "based on some of the symptoms you described - the unusual food cravings, the... bubbly tummy... the unusual... responses during the examination – it could be anything really. Fire, for instance, can cause a burning sensation. Earth might lead to a feeling of heaviness. And then there's... well, let's just say the more... volatile elements can cause some truly... unpleasant side effects."
Mia's breath hitched. Fire, Earth, volatile elements? Dr. Ingalls was definitely on the right track. A quick glance at Nelson, who was now humming a tune and absentmindedly trying to pick his toes with his nose, confirmed her suspicions. This was no ordinary case of food poisoning.
Dr. Ingalls, her gaze flitting between Mia and Nelson, seemed to come to a decision. Leaning closer, she lowered her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Look," she said, "I don't usually pry into people's business, but something tells me there's more to this than just a bad burger. Are you two... Ninjago's ninjas?"
Mia's eyes widened in surprise. This unassuming doctor, with her kind eyes and gentle touch, had somehow figured them out. She exchanged a silent glance with Blackie, who simply rolled his eyes. Apparently, keeping their identities secret was proving to be a bigger challenge than they anticipated.
Surprise flickered across Nelson's face. "Ninjago? What's Ninjago? Is that a new candy brand?" Mia, burying her face in her hand, groaned. This was going to be a long conversation.
Dr. Ingalls, however, remained undeterred. A glint of amusement twinkled in her eyes. "Let's just say," she said, a playful smile tugging at the corner of her lips, "I have a feeling you two might know a thing or two about elemental powers. But for now, let's focus on getting Beatruce here feeling better, shall we?"
Nelson, oblivious to the deeper conversation, perked up at the mention of his (temporary) alias. "Yeah! No more tummy troubles for Beatruce!"
Dr. Ingalls led them to a different section of the clinic, one that looked more like a high-tech laboratory than a doctor's office. Gone were the calming white walls and sterile atmosphere – they were replaced by blinking lights, whirring machines, and strange contraptions that looked like they came straight out of a science fiction movie.
"Okay, Beatruce," Dr. Ingalls said, her playful demeanor replaced by a professional air. "These tests might be a little... unconventional. But they're completely painless, I promise." She explained that these tests weren't specifically designed to identify Nelson's (or Beatruce's) element, but rather to pinpoint the exact cause of his food poisoning and create a targeted cure.
The tests themselves were a series of bizarre experiences. One involved Nelson sitting in a large, clear bubble filled with a strange, fizzy liquid. Another involved wearing a headset that looked like it belonged on a cyborg, with flashing lights and wires connecting to his temples. Through it all, Nelson remained surprisingly cheerful, giggling at the strange sensations and asking Dr. Ingalls a million questions about the machines.
Mia, on the other hand, couldn't help but feel a mix of amusement and worry. Seeing Nelson, her normally stoic teammate, transformed into this childlike Beatruce was both hilarious and disorienting. But the underlying concern for his well-being remained.
Finally, after a battery of tests that seemed to stretch on forever, Dr. Ingalls emerged from a side room with a triumphant smile on her face. "Well, Beatruce," she announced, holding up a small vial filled with a clear liquid, "it seems the culprit was a combination of questionable mystery meat and an overabundance of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Not the most balanced meal, I must say."
Nelson, now sporting a bright green headband as a souvenir from one of the tests, scratched his head in confusion. "Mystery meat? Cookie dough ice cream? Who ate all that?"
Mia couldn't help but snort with laughter. "Apparently, Beatruce did," she managed to say between giggles.
Dr. Ingalls handed the vial to Mia. "This is a special concoction I whipped up," she explained. "One dose should settle his stomach and get him back on his feet in no time. But remember, a balanced diet is key! No more questionable burgers or overindulging in ice cream, alright?"
Nelson's face fell, but he nodded reluctantly. "Okay, Doc. But can I have a banana? Those are healthy, right?"
Dr. Ingalls chuckled. "For today, Beatruce, a banana works just fine."
As they left the clinic, Nelson, back to his usual self (though with a faint green tint to his skin courtesy of one of the tests), turned to Mia with a sheepish grin. "So, about this Ninjago thing..."
Mia sighed. "Later, Nelson. Much later." She couldn't wait to tell Lloyd and the others about their wild adventure with a shape-shifting teammate, a mysterious doctor, and a clinic filled with bizarre tests. It was definitely a mission they wouldn't soon forget.
