Chapter 19

Mia was trying ( and failing) to stop her food poisoned boyfriend from getting ice cream at nine in the night.

" But, Mia!" He protested. " It's morning! And hot!"

'O-kay', Mia thought. ' That food really got to him.'

" Nelson..." She started, but Nelson cut her off.

" My name's not ' Nelson'. My name's Beatruce!"

" Beatru... what?!" Mia was dumbfounded.

" Yeah, you know? My name!"

" I.... Your name.... Nelson..."

During this time Mia was trying to understand what was going on, Nelson had slipped away and traveled to the ice cream stand, where he got a triple scoop of chocolate with oreos on.

" Nelson!" Mia screeched, running to his side.

" What?"

Mia sighed. " Nothing."

Nelson shrugged and started licking his ice cream. Soon, he had devoured all of it.

" 'Kay. So, Nelson-"

" Beatruce!"

" Beatruce?! That's not even a name!"

Nelson looked hurt.

" So you're saying I don't exist?" His lower lip quivered.

" I....." Mia trailed off, then sighed.

" Fine. BEATRUCE, we have to find Master Wu."

" Ooooh! You mean Master of angry looks?"

Now Mia was exasperated.

" Fine! Yes! Master of angry looks! We need to find him!"

" Well.... Can we go now?"

Mia exchanged a concerned look with Blackie. Blackie stretched his paws and said, " You need to take him to a doctor. This is getting ridiculous."

" My exact thoughts." Then Mia looked around.

" Human! You have a cardboard slice with all those buttons! Surely you can use those!" Nelson said nonchalantly.

" You mean, a phone?"

" Yes. A phone."

Mia winced. Trying to explain a phone to a food-poisoned, name-changing boyfriend was proving to be an epic struggle. "Yes, Beatruce," she sighed, enunciating each syllable with exaggerated patience. "A phone. We can use it to call a... a chariot with flashing lights that will take you to a place filled with people in white coats who will make you feel better."

Nelson's eyes widened. "Chariot with flashing lights? Sounds awesome!" Before Mia could stop him, he snatched her phone from the table. Blackie let out a startled yowl, leaping onto a nearby chair in protest.

The phone, bless its user-friendly interface, went straight to the most recently dialed number. Which, unfortunately, happened to be Mia's mom.

"Mia honey! How's the mission going?" her mother's voice boomed through the speaker.

"Uh, Mom," Mia stammered, desperately trying to pry the phone out of Nelson's grasp. "It's... a little complicated."

"Complicated?" Nelson chirped, waving the phone around like a shiny toy. "Is this the angry-looks master lady? Can I tell her about the mystery meat burger?"

Mia groaned. This was not the conversation she wanted her mother to overhear. "Mom, listen, we need to go to a..." Her voice trailed off as Nelson, with the dexterity of a toddler possessed by a sugar demon, managed to unlock the phone and activate the video call.

A concerned face filled the screen. "Mia? Are you alright? What's that... green... thing in your hand?"

Mia whipped the phone around to see Nelson proudly displaying the half-eaten remains of his triple chocolate ice cream, a triumphant grin plastered across his face. "It's called a Beatruce, Mom! And it loves ice cream!"

Mia's jaw dropped. Blackie, ever the opportunist, took this moment to swat the phone out of Nelson's hand with a well-aimed paw. It landed with a satisfying thud on the floor, thankfully ending the video call.

Silence descended upon the room, broken only by Nelson's confused whimper.

Mia, with a deep breath, managed a strained smile. "Alright, Beatruce," she said, using the name with a gritted-teeth sweetness, "Let's get you that chariot with flashing lights, shall we?"

Nelson, oblivious to her inner turmoil, beamed. "Yay! Finally!"

Blackie, from his perch on the chair, let out a long-suffering meow. Hailing a cab with a food-poisoned, ice-cream-craving, name-changing boyfriend was definitely not part of his ninja training. Yet, somehow, they managed to flag down a taxi and pile into the back. The ride to the hospital was a blur of nonsensical ramblings from Nelson about "Beatruces" and "angry-looks masters," punctuated by the occasional, less than pleasant, gurgle from his stomach.

As they arrived at the brightly lit hospital entrance, Nelson, momentarily forgetting his woes, gasped in awe. "Wow! So many flashing lights!"

Mia, fighting back a wave of nausea, helped him out of the cab. "Just stay strong, Beatruce," she mumbled under her breath, ushering him into the sterile lobby. Here's hoping, she thought, that a doctor and a hefty dose of medication could undo the damage of that questionable airport diner.

" Mia? What in Ninjago is happening? What happened to Nelson? Did he change when me and your dad died?"

Mia's parents, who were once dead, were turned into ghosts. A few months ago, they managed to change them back into normal humans.

" No, mom." Mia sighed. " Nelson was food poisoned."

Mia's mom's ghostly face, now thankfully back in its human form, crinkled in concern. "Food poisoned, huh? Sounds nasty. You sure you don't want me to come down there and give him one of my famous 'feel-better' soups?"

Mia, still reeling from the phone call and the chaotic cab ride, could only manage a weak smile. "Maybe later, Mom. Right now, I just need to get Beatruce checked out and... hopefully... coherent again."

Blackie, perched on Mia's shoulder, let out a pointed meow, echoing her sentiment. The whole "Beatruce" situation was already giving him a headache – a feline headache, which he wasn't entirely sure was a real thing, but it felt appropriate nonetheless.

As they approached the reception desk, a well-dressed woman with a nametag that read "Carrie" gave them a curious look. "Can I help you folks?" she chirped, her smile a little too perky for Mia's current state.

"Uh, yeah," Mia stammered, trying to keep her voice steady. "My... friend here is a little under the weather. Food poisoning, I think."

Carrie's smile faltered slightly. "Food poisoning, huh? We get a lot of that around here. Thanks to that new burger joint down the street, I swear..."

Mia winced, picturing the dubious "mystery meat burger" Nelson had devoured earlier. "Right," she mumbled, hoping to cut Carrie's monologue short.

Just then, Nelson, who had been unusually quiet for the past few minutes, piped up in a voice suspiciously free of nausea. "Excuse me, ma'am. Is this the place where they give out those comfy white coats? The ones with all the pockets for candy?"

Carrie's smile returned, wider than ever. "Candy, huh? Well, we do have some lollipops for our brave patients."

Nelson's eyes lit up. "Lollipops? This place is awesome!"

Mia groaned, burying her face in her hand. Blackie, with a dramatic sigh, simply rolled his eyes. This was going to be a long night.
