Chapter 18

The dramatic tension in the room fizzled faster than a damp firecracker. Edna Walker, Jay's mom, burst through the door like a whirlwind of wrenches and misplaced maternal concern. Her face, usually radiating warmth and worry, was contorted in a mask of panic.

"Jay! My poor baby ninja!" she cried, barreling towards Cole's bed, mistaking him for her son in the sterile white sheets.

Cole, still groggy and sporting a bewildered expression, sputtered in surprise. "Uh, ma'am, I think you've got the wrong room..."

Edna skidded to a halt, her wrenches jangling like wind chimes in a hurricane. Her eyes, usually twinkling with mischief, narrowed as they scanned the room. Relief washed over her face as she spotted Jay perched on a windowsill, looking sheepish and slightly singed.

"There you are, you little sparkplug!" she boomed, her voice laced with mock-anger. "I heard all about your little adventure from Nya. Care to explain why you smell like a burnt toaster and have a singed eyebrow?"

Jay winced. "Uh, hi Mom. Long story involving bad guys, stink bombs, and maybe a slight miscalculation with my lightning powers."

Edna crossed her arms, her wrenches glinting ominously. "A miscalculation, huh? Sounds suspiciously like you were up to your usual shenanigans. And what about your friends? Did they also get singed by your 'miscalculations'?"

Lloyd, ever the diplomat, stepped forward. "Actually, Mrs. Walker, it was more of a team effort. We encountered the Mechanic, and things got a little... messy."

Edna's gaze softened as she took in Lloyd's bandaged arm and Nya's slightly singed armor. A wry smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "Ninjas will be ninjas, I suppose. But that doesn't mean you have to break yourselves in half doing it."

She marched over to Jay and, with surprising strength for a woman her age, gave him a strong hug. Jay yelped in mock protest, but a genuine smile spread across his face.

Skylar, ever the observer, leaned towards Vania and whispered, "See? Now that's a proper ninja mom. Doesn't take any nonsense, but loves her cub unconditionally."

Vania chuckled. Edna's unexpected arrival had certainly injected a much-needed dose of humor into the tense situation.

Suddenly, Edna's eyes landed on Cole, who was still blinking owlishly from his near-death scare. "And who might this handsome young man be?" she inquired, her voice taking on a playful tone.

Cole, ever the charmer, straightened up in his bed, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "The name's Cole, ma'am. And from what I hear, I'm the one who just saved your son from a heart attack by pretending to be dead."

Edna's laugh boomed through the room, a sound as warm and comforting as a crackling fireplace. "Well, Cole," she declared, clapping him on the shoulder with surprising force, "you're alright in my book. Just make sure you keep my Jay safe, even if it means occasionally scaring him half to death."

The room erupted in laughter, the tension dissolving into a wave of camaraderie. Even with their mission far from over and Cole still recovering, a sense of hope flickered in the air. They were a team, a family of sorts, bound by friendship, loyalty, and the occasional singed eyebrow. And with Edna's unexpected visit, they were reminded that even in the face of danger, there was always room for a little laughter, a little love, and a whole lot of wrenches.

The laughter in the hospital room was abruptly cut short by the door swinging open with a dramatic flourish. Standing in the doorway, bathed in the harsh fluorescent light, was Ed Walker, Jay's father. Unlike Edna's chaotic energy, Ed exuded a quiet confidence, his tool belt slung low on his hips like a badge of honor.

"Edna," he drawled, his voice a deep rumble, "heard there was a family emergency. Thought I'd come lend a hand... or a wrench, whichever is needed most."

Edna, ever the dominant force, swatted his arm playfully. "Don't be silly, Ed. Just a little ninja mishap. Though," she turned to Jay with a mischievous glint in her eye, "your father might be interested in hearing about the 'miscalculation' that resulted in your singed eyebrows."

Jay groaned, burying his face in his hands. The last thing he needed right now was his parents tag-teaming him with their embarrassing childhood stories.

"Oh, come on, son," Ed chuckled, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes. "Let's hear it. Did you finally try to hotwire that old jalopy again?"

Jay peeked out from behind his hands, a look of mock horror on his face. "Dad! We talked about this! That was one time, and it was a learning experience!"

Ed winked at Edna. "Learning experiences tend to involve a bit of smoke and singed hair, wouldn't you agree, Edna?"

Edna snorted with laughter, a sound that rivaled the beeping of the heart monitor. "Speaking of smoke," she said, her gaze flickering to Cole, "seems your 'near-death experience' scared the living daylights out of my Jay here. Thought you were a goner!"

Cole, ever the charmer, flashed a grin. "Well, Mrs. Walker, all's well that ends well. Besides, a little dramatic fainting never hurt anyone... except maybe Jay's heart."

Jay shot Cole a playful glare. "Very funny, Cole. Thanks for making me look like a scaredy-cat."

The room erupted in good-natured laughter once more. Even Lloyd, Nya, Skylar, and Vania couldn't help but be swept up in the playful banter. It was a welcome distraction from the weight of their mission and Cole's uncertain health.

Edna, ever the pragmatist, cleared her throat. "Alright, alright, enough with the dramatics. Let's get down to business. What exactly happened out there?"

As Lloyd launched into a more detailed explanation of their encounter with the Mechanic, Edna and Ed listened intently. Their playful demeanor shifted into one of concern, their faces etched with worry as they learned about the villain's escape and his cryptic words.

"A smaller team, huh?" Ed muttered, stroking his chin thoughtfully. "Sounds like the Mechanic's after a specific location. Maybe somewhere only a few ninjas could access."

Edna nodded, her eyes gleaming with a newfound determination. "Then we need to figure out where that is. And I've got a feeling my trusty toolbox might come in handy."

With Edna and Ed now part of the impromptu war council, the atmosphere in the room shifted. The laughter subsided, replaced by a shared sense of purpose. They were a family, bound by blood and by their love for Jay, and they wouldn't let anything stop them from protecting Ninjago City.

As they strategized, brainstorming ideas and sharing intel, a newfound confidence bloomed within them. They might be facing a cunning villain and an uncertain future, but they had each other. And with a little bit of Ed's engineering expertise, Edna's wrenches, and a whole lot of love (and maybe a few more embarrassing childhood stories), they were ready to take on whatever the Mechanic threw their way.
