Chapter 16

Skylar, ever the firecracker, leaned forward after the ninja left, a mischievous glint in her eye. "So," she began, her voice barely a whisper, "tell me everything about this little 'babysitting' situation. Did Cole finally confess his undying love for you in a feverish, sweat-drenched monologue?"

Vania, despite the seriousness of the situation, couldn't help but crack a small smile. "Oh, Skylar, you know Cole," she replied, rolling her eyes playfully. "He's probably been muttering about perfecting his rock puns in his sleep."

Skylar threw her head back and laughed, the sound echoing oddly in the sterile room. Suddenly, the heart monitor beside Cole let out a sharp, erratic beep. Their laughter died instantly, replaced by a jolt of worry.

Vania shot a panicked look at Skylar. "Cole?" she whispered, rushing to his side.

The beeping continued, a frantic rhythm that sent shivers down their spines. Just as Skylar reached for the call button to summon a nurse, a voice, weak but undeniably Cole, rasped out from the bed.

"Ugh, what was that awful smell? Did someone bring in Jay's dirty laundry again?"

Vania and Skylar stared at him, flabbergasted. The heart monitor miraculously returned to its steady rhythm. Skylar burst out laughing, tears welling up in her eyes.

"Cole! You scared the living daylights out of us!" she wheezed between giggles.

Cole, still groggy from sleep, blinked at them owlishly. "What are you talking about, Sky? I just woke up from a nap that smelled suspiciously like old gym socks."

Vania, wiping tears of relief from her eyes, explained the ordeal with the heart monitor and their initial panic. Cole, still confused but ever the charmer, winked at her.

"See, Vania? This is why you don't trust beeping machines. They're like Lloyd – always overreacting."

Just then, the door to the room swung open with a dramatic flourish. In walked Nya, her face grim, followed by a sheepish-looking Lloyd.

"Alright, guys," Nya began, her voice serious, "we found something pretty weird..."

She was cut off by a loud, booming voice that echoed from the hallway.

"Doctor! Nurse! My pet armadillo just swallowed my dentures again!"

Vania, Skylar, and Cole exchanged bewildered glances. This hospital, they decided, was definitely one of a kind. Perhaps, just perhaps, a little chaos was exactly what they needed to keep their spirits high in the face of their uncertain future.
