Chapter 13

The rusty pickup screeched to a halt in front of a surprisingly charming little hotel. Painted a cheerful sunshine yellow with bright blue trim, it was a welcome sight after the neon assault of the airport city. A hand-painted sign above the entrance proclaimed it: "The Sunbeam Inn - Rest for Weary Travelers (and Questionable Plumbing is Fully Functional!)"

Mia, Nelson, and Blackie cautiously climbed out of the truck, their benefactor waving them a cheery goodbye. "See you around, folks! And tell the nice folks at the Sunbeam Inn that Big Ron sent you!"

With a final rumble, the pickup disappeared into the night, leaving them standing on the sidewalk. Mia sniffed the air tentatively. Unlike the questionable diner, this place actually smelled... clean.

Pushing open the door, they were greeted by a cozy lobby, a crackling fireplace casting a warm glow on mismatched armchairs and a worn but comfortable-looking sofa. A kindly-looking woman with a shock of pink hair emerged from behind a cluttered reception desk.

"Welcome to the Sunbeam Inn!" she boomed, her voice surprisingly cheerful for someone who looked like she hadn't slept in a week. "You must be Big Ron's crew! He always sends the most interesting folks our way."

Mia, unsure of how to respond, simply offered a small smile. "Uh, yeah. We're looking for a room, please."

The woman, whose nametag declared her to be "Brenda," beamed. "Of course! We have a lovely room on the second floor, overlooking the, uh..." she trailed off, peering out the window at a rather unimpressive brick wall. "Well, it gets good afternoon sun!"

Nelson, bless his optimistic heart, chimed in. "Sounds perfect! We're just happy to have a place to stay."

Brenda bustled around, handing them a key and a stack of brochures that seemed to advertise everything from llama wrestling lessons to the history of sporks.

"Now, if you need anything at all," Brenda continued, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "don't hesitate to ask. We've got the best gossip in town. Did you hear about Mildred down the street and her prize-winning pet slug?"

Mia and Nelson exchanged another glance. This wasn't exactly the intel-gathering mission they had envisioned, but the friendly atmosphere and surprisingly clean room were a welcome change from the airport city. Maybe, just maybe, they could find a way to use the Sunbeam Inn's unique charm (and Brenda's questionable gossip) to their advantage. After all, who knew what kind of secrets a seemingly ordinary town might hold?

As they settled into their unexpectedly pleasant room, Blackie perched on the windowsill, his emerald eyes gleaming with amusement. "Well," he declared, his voice dry, "this is certainly an interesting turn of events."

Mia couldn't help but agree. They were lost, yes, but they were also safe, at least for now. And who knows, maybe a little friendly gossip and a clean bed were exactly what they needed to get back on track and find Wu. After all, sometimes the most unexpected places held the most unexpected clues.
