Chapter 5

He found himself waking up in an environment he had never seen before. Actually, it seemed familiar to him, but he couldn't figure out why. It was as if a fraction of his memory was fragmented. It almost gave him a headache to recall the missing details.

He himself stood amidst clouds that covered the ground beneath him. Some of it was fog, but he could tell that part of it was thick concentrations of magical energy. A singular light called him forward, so he began to walk towards it.

"Turn back. You do not know where it is that you are trying to go, boy."

The voice had him stopping in place, apprehensive of potential danger. He couldn't see anything past the light or clouds. Anything beyond just a few meters in front of him was a pitch black aside from the beckoning light. It was beginning to change colors from hues of blue to mixes of purple and red.

(Y/n) was not sure if he should heed the voice's warning, or ask it for help. He didn't know how he had gotten to this place, but he had been taught that staying in once place gets nothing done. He took another step forward and froze again at the sound of a deep growl. It was far too close for comfort though (y/n) was unable to tell the direction from which it came.

"Did I not speak loud enough the first time, boy? Do not seek what can be seen. You know not what lies ahead." The voice echoed in anger around him.

In response to (y/n)'s surprise, his command seals glowed. The magical energy in the area fled from him, leaving behind thinner areas of fog. What they also revealed as they left was a sight (y/n) couldn't quite describe. The creature that stood before him was unlike any he had seen before. It's horns curled on the ends and its fangs were slightly visible even without its teeth on full display. The features were quite the contrast to the fur of pure white that accompanied swirls of color in the form of a tail. Or was it multiple tails?

"Cath...Palug?" The words slipped off his tongue as if he knew them. In truth, he had no idea what words he had spoken nor the meaning behind them.

"Remember that name, but tell no one of it. If you don't listen to anything else I say, at least follow that instruction. You and your mother's lives depend on it."

"My mother?" (Y/n) had many questions, but the magic energy returned, this time surrounding9⁹⁹⁹ everything and blocking out the light he had seen in the distance. "Wait!" His call was too late and his vision went dark.

With a jolt, he arose from his comatose state in panick. It took him a moment to realize that he was at Tokugawa. He recalled the previous events as he looked around the room he was in, his servant's room. There was no mistaking the lavishly decorated area nor could one ignore the large golden throne sitting in the back of the bedroom. It seemed quite out of place, but no one ever dared to question it.

"You died." (Y/n) blinked at his servant, who stood near the throne with his back turned.

"I what?" If he had died, then how was he here now? Surely, he was not hallucinating the warm blankets wrapped around his healing shoulders. He could still feel traces of the pain left behind by summoning a servant. There was no mistaking that.

"Your heart stopped, and that mongrel tried to dispose of you." Gilgamesh faced him with an anger that (y/n) had never seen before. The pupils of his eyes were almost slits in the pools of red that stared back at him. There were few things in this world that (y/n) feared, and now that glare that his servant held was one of them. Gilgamesh seemed to take notice because his expression shifted into uncharacteristically noticeable concern.

"If I'm dead..." (y/n) trailed off as he held up his hands to see if he was a ghost.

"By human standards, you did die, yes. You are not human, but no mere homunculi lives after losing operation of such an important vital organ. You may be more similar to...no, that isn't important." Gilgamesh summoned a portal to his treasury and pulled free the necklace that belonged to the director. "For now, I will keep this as it is rightfully mine, but you will need it. This is no place for you to remain."

"I don't understand. What happened? What's going on?" (Y/n) wanted answers not only to is current questions, but also the once prior. Who was that white colored beast and what was Cath Palug? Could he trust his servant with that knowledge or was it truly best not to mention it to anyone as he was told.

"Sakura, the woman taking ownership of you as your mother, did a series of tests on you while you were recovering. Whatever it is that is powering you is a force so destructive that it's tearing you apart from the inside out. You are dying." He had spoken as nonchalantly as possible, but the odd silence that followed was enough to let (y/n) know that Archer was greatly bothered by it. "They insist on forcing you to continue this organization's work despite that. I will not allow it."

"We could leave. Right now. I could leave and go back to London or visit America. I read about the snow in Russia. I've still never seen snow before." (Y/n) was entirely serious and was attempting to view the situation in a positive light, but how could he? What was he supposed to feel after being told that his three months of living was about to be cut short?

"The mongrel running this place and that woman who foolishly follows him are the only ones with the knowledge on how to preserve your life. Currently, I have not the research to figure out what exactly that is. However, the very second I do, Tokugawa will become but a memory."

His five year old mind didn't want to hear that. Already, he could recall all of the pictures in the books he had looked at showing the places he had still not seen. "I don't want to die..."

"You won't. Not again. I will not allow it." Though he was speaking about (y/n), the boy couldn't shake the feeling that Gilgamesh was reffering to someone else. "Get some rest. Tomorrow, I will teach you how to be a king. You will control that power and that foul beast lying outside my door."

(Y/n) had almost forgotten about the enormous wolf that he had somehow summoned. If the wolf was outside of the room, then there was no wonder that (y/n) hadn't been bothered. Everyone likely avoided the oversized creature.

"Can I name him?" (y/n) wondered aloud. Gilgamesh did not reply. He wondered if his servant had even heard him. Rather than asking again, (y/n) attempted to get more rest though he could not rest his mind after all that had happened. Details such as Sakura's claim to be his mother and the director's words that there was a replacement for him kept him awake through the night.
