Chapter 26

(Y/n) sat in front of the glass in disbelief. "You see," Sakura said. "The man that is your father took everything from me a second time. I survived it, and your father tried to apologize once he had come to his senses, but I didn't want to hear it. He took Shirou and Rin's names to make up for his crime. He murdered them, and because I survived, he promised to right his wrongs and stop chasing after what he called anomalies." Sakura rested her forehead on the glass with a sigh, forgetting to shoot a hurtful remark at the teen in front of her.

"It's not your fault," (y/n) told her.

"What?" Her previous aggression disappeared entirely.

"You're blaming yourself still. It's not your fault," (y/n) repeated. "It's my father's fault. He caused all of this."

Sakura laughed at him. "You're just like your mother." She shook her head and gave him a frown. "You still don't understand though. I am still in the wrong. I told you when you were younger that you were nothing like all the other homunculi did I not? How do you think you ended up in the predicament that you're in? Do you really think your father wanted to use his own son as an experiment?"

"I wouldn't put it past him," Gilgamesh grumbled in the background. (Y/n) agreed with him.

"No, of course not. He used your DNA to create homonculi that were identical in appearance to you while you were placed in the chamber that you just left from." She was talking to him normally now. It was good to see her unconsciously dropping her act. "I was angry at the time, so I acted in order to hurt your father. I didn't think much about it until some time had passed."

"Hm? What did you do?" he asked, inching towards the glass to rest his head against it in the same place that Sakura did.

"I switched you with a fake," she quietly answered. Her dress flowed to the ground unmoving at the confession. "I made sure to keep track of where I placed you, but even your own father never noticed. Not that he would. He hated the homunculi so much that he loathed the very idea of their existence because they looked so much like you. It was a constant reminder of his failures."

"But you looked after me." (Y/n) felt more comfortable in her presence again. She was just the same as she always had been. Nothing had really changed. "I don't blame a you. If you hadn't swapped me out, then I'd still be stuck in that place wouldn't I? Thanks to you, I've been able to experience so many things."

"I caused you suffering," Sakura denied. She refused to look at him. "You should hate me, just like your father does. I do nothing but hurt the people around me."

"You're the best mom I've had," he said without hesitation.

Sakura backed away from the glass and looked at him on shock. "How can you say that when you still have a mother? I'm nothing like her. She's so kind and pure. I'm nothing like her!" (Y/n) hadn't forgotten about his birth mother, not even for a bit. He just simply didn't know her. How could he when the only thing he had to go by was a faded memory.

"I'm going to find a way to free you." He looked back at his servant who watched in silence. "Did you really want to kill her for that?"

"What do you think?" Gilgamesh said, closing his eyes in annoyance. (Y/n) smiled at him.

"You can't free me," Sakura spoke up. He turned his attention back to his adoptive mother. "You should be focusing on yourself anyway. You're sick," she sadly added. "I've done everything I could to slow the progress of your disease, but I could only do so much."

"Disease?" (Y/n) looked back at his servant again finding that the king was certainly troubled by the mere mention of it and refused to look at him. "I'm sick? Is that why I've been unconscious for so long...?"

"It's the reason you were kept away from everything to begin with," his mother said.

"That's enough, Sakura." Gilgamesh crossed his arms. "Do not trouble him with such trivial matters at this time. Did you not wish to check on the boy's condition? That's why you asked to see him again, is it not? Stop acting foolish and get on with it." Sakura flinched at his sudden call out. "You will not get the chance again any time soon. The director is only keeping his distance right now because the boy has just woken up at a bad time for the man."

"He needs to know," Sakura said. "Besides, you don't seem to have any intention of properly explaining it." It was a little surprising to hear her talk back to the king like that. "(Y/n), your father is not human anymore. He once was, but that is no longer the case. You, however, are half human. The other half is whatever your mother is. Even I do not know. She stopped responding to her environment after that incident, so the director had her sealed away in a secret location and left his pet behind to protect her. I believe that if you find her and awaken her, she will be able to help cure you." Sakura gave him a thoughtful expression. "You hold the power of two different original magics within you. If one was to be taken away or both of them were to combine, you could probably easily heal over time on your own."

"Then what am I sick from?" He was aware of it before, but he didn't realize that it was a disease that he had always had. Now that he was certain that he wasn't just some homonculi, it didn't make sense for it to be a side effect of artificial life. He was as naturally born as any other human.

"Well, you grow just as fast as the homonculi do, so that could have something to do with it. The truth of the matter is that your body simply cannot handle being alive. Those command seals on your hands are the only things keeping you alive, but I have no clue what they are or where they came from. Even Shir– the director wouldn't say anything about them or why they appeared on all the copies of you as well."

"Do you know where I can find my mother?"

Sakura nodded. "Yes, she is in that frigid cold place called Antarctica. As for how you'll get there..." she sighed. "You need to escape Tokugawa and never come back."

       "Huh?" (Y/n) blinked at her.

"It's the safest option even if it does risk your life as well," Gilgamesh spoke again. They seemed to have already planned this ahead of time. "The director's power is being directed elsewhere, so even if he tried to stop you, he wouldn't have the power to do so with me in the way."

"You're not going with me?" (Y/n) was starting to understand that this had all been set up. Sakura had tried to appear to hate him to make it easier for him to leave. As for his own servant...

"You will be harder to track without me there. He can sense divine servants far easily than regular ones." The king narrowed his eyes at him. "Do not look at me like that. This is for your own good. I have already prepared emergency treatment for you ahead of time, and there is an ally outside of this facility that has agreed to help." (Y/n) wanted to protests, but he had no valid argument to combat their decision. He truly still didn't know what was going on, and it was a fact that he was suffering from an unknown disease.

"When do I have to go...?" he solemnly asked. What other choice did he have?
