Chapter 18
"So this is France," Masuda exclaimed as he looked out of the train windows. He seemed more eager than any of them to be in France. (Y/n) suspected that it was simply because of his goal finally being so close within reach. Perhaps he would feel the same if their roles had been swapped.
"Calm yourself. This is no time to be acting like a child," Gilgamwsh snapped. Masuda practically ignored him.
"It's probably best if he actually acts like a child. That's our job as of now, right?" Gray said in a low voice so as not to be heard. She was referring to their plan. Gilgamesh was to pose as a rich tourist that was traveling the world with his adopted children. The rich part was no act, so they only had to worry about whether or not he could fit the tourist role without upsetting too many people with his arrogance.
Gray's French was beginner level at best, so that was why they went with the adoption route. To make things easier, (y/n) would pretend not to know any French and speak a different language entirely. Masuda, being a servant, could understand any language which left Gilgamesh looking like an absolute scholar capable of speaking and translating all three of the languages. To fit their roles, they each wore different types of clothes based on their assumed ages which left (y/n) a bit uncomfortable. He looked like a twelve year old but his mental age was a little older than that. It also didn't help that he was technically still just a little over five. It made him wonder what type of being his mother was if he aged so quickly.
The train dropped them off at their stop, signaling the start of their mission. They had taken the train from Dijon to reach Citeaux, France which happened to be the true location of Citeaux Abbey. Gray had to explain during the meeting that her mentor was unfamiliar with France's geography and told them the wrong town, but since it wasn't too far away, it would be best for them to use Dijon as a cover. It was known for its wine and mustard, perfect for an excuse as to why anyone would want to visit the place. It was at least a far better excuse than the four of them saying they traveled all the way here to see an abbey. The mistake turned out to be in their favor in the end.
Things were going smoothly. No one could tell if Masuda was just overhyped or really good at acting, but he did his task extremely well. "Excuse me, sir!" Masuda waved down the nearest person he saw standing alone just outside the train station. The man directed his attention towards them not bothering to hide his surprise. "Would you happen to know where Citeaux Abbey is? My family was kind enough to let me visit somewhere so close to home, but when I found out that my parents had once visited that abbey, I just had to go see it for myself!"
The man tilted his head. "Parents?" He didn't seem to put the picture together just yet.
"Yes, his parents," Gilgamesh stepped in. "I can't believe I am going along with such foolishness." It was clear that he would much rather be off enjoying the wine in Dijon than being there in that moment. "These are all my children. I've adopted them and found the locations of their original birth parents. This was only supposed to be a trip to see what Dijon had to offer, but you see the boy. How could I deny him a trip to the abbey if it was only a mere train ride away?"
(Y/n) fought hard not to burst into laughter at Gilgamesh's attempt to make all of this believable. He had tried to tell them that they didn't have to go this far, but Gray and Masuda had been adamant that they avoid using magic and get to the abbey without running the risk of attracting any priests. They'd be executed on the spot, or arrested if anyone caught the usage of their magecraft. (Y/n) couldn't help but feel as though that were a hypocritical statement considering that Gray was using magecraft to make Add's cage appear to be a bag while Masuda was using magecraft to hide his magical energy as best as he could.
The man scratched his head in confusion, but glady explained to Masuda how to get there. He even gave them a note with the directions written down on them. Gray gave them man a quick thanks in French before the group went on their way.
"That's wasn't so bad," Masuda spoke up once they were out of earshot.
"We are never doing that again," Gilgamesh hissed. They all walked in silence to reach the abbey from there on out.
The few times that Masuda had been able to contact his master resulted in her simply telling him to keep hiding or to remain out of reach of both the mages and followers of the Holy Church. Not once had she given Masuda an explaination for his summoning nor any motive behind any of it. This was going to be Masuda's first chance at some real answers.
"(Y/n)?" Gray looked worried as she tried to catch his attention. "You suddenly stopped walking, are you okay?"
(Y/n) hadn't really heard her. "Impossible. That energy." Gilgamesh and Masuda had also stopped in their tracks, further confusing Gray who couldn't quite sense what they already could. "There's no way that the Holy Church..."
"It's possible. Why else are they able to easily summon a servant. They have a holy grail in their possession." Gilgamesh finished the thought that he wouldn't.
"This can't be a good thing," Masuda mumbled. His previously cheerful mood took an abrupt drop into fear. "Was there always a holy grail in Citeaux?"
"Now isn't the time to be attempting any humor," Gray spoke. "What's going on? What is it that all of you are suddenly wary of?"
"I'm assuming that would be me." The voice ahead of them sent chills down all of their spines except Gilgamesh. He had been the only one to take action, immediately opening his treasury and firing at the new presence. Every single attack was blocked by a shield. Behind that shield was a servant, one that (y/n) had never seen before.
"I wasn't expecting you to attack your own former master, though I guess you don't remember that." Caren herself appeared from behind the shield weilding servant. "Or maybe you do remember?" The girl tilted her head at Gilgamesh before looking to Masuda. "Welcome home my dear little Ruler. I've been waiting for you. I've come to welcome you and your friends to my singularity." She gave them an innocent smile. "Feel free to make yourselves at home."
(Y/n) was half expecting Gilgamesh to attack her again, but Archer remained still and stared at Caren as if she had actually done something to stun him. Masuda was merely unsettled by whatever this new development was leaving Gray and (y/n) himself as the only two individuals left functioning.
"Well, don't just stand there. Come on in," Caren urged.

Now I get to start connecting more dots. For those of you who don't know, Caren Hortensia was the master of Cu and Gilgamesh in Fate/Hollow Ataraxia. I guess that's technically spoilers?? My bad. Until next time you awesome readers!
