Chapter 17

It was cold. (Y/n) could certainly feel the temperature dropping as he himself began to seemingly freeze alive. His eyes shot open and a gasp came out without any sound. His breath condensed in the air, but it was indistinguishable from the fog that surrounded him.

"It was no wonder I was asked to watch over you. First you go and die, then you send yourself into this place without even thinking about it." A sudden warmth overtook him as the fog dispersed. It was replaced by familiar white fur and colors of a mixing galaxy. "That wouldn't entirely be your fault. You don't seem to remember. Your mother could only do so much to protect you from him."

(Y/n) didn't hesitate to hug the fluffy creature moreso for survival than anything else. "Cath Palug," he remembered.

"That is my name, but I think it would be best if you would call me Fou. That is the name I prefer. I trust you with it now that I've seen that you do not align yourself with that person."

"W-Where are we?" The frigid weather had him shivering against Fou's fur.

"This would be the place I told you not to go the last time we were here. You must have remembered something important since you ended up here as soon as you fell asleep." Fou lifted his tail up and dropped it onto (y/n) which plunged the boy into a heated space where he floated among stars. Fou's voice could still be heard. "Like me, your conciousness is being transmitted to this place while your body remains elsewhere. You are quite lucky to only run into these problems when I am around. It's been years since you came in contact with my own conciousness. I will admit, I got worried for a moment there."

The cold weather faded away, and Fou lifted his tail away from (y/n) who fell to the ground once gravity was in effect again. They were back in the same foggy area where he had initially met Cath Palug. "What exactly is this place? Why am I here?"

"This is the place where your mother is."

(Y/n) blinked in surprise. "She's...still alive?" He didn't know how he should feel about that. His origins were already obscure, and he had just learned that he was not just some designer baby. "Why didn't she look for me?" He couldn't help but wonder about this woman who he had never met.

"She has been sealed away in this place. I attempted to save her, but I was defeated by that person and my conciousness was forcefully trapped away from my body. As of right now, my physical self is being used as a guardian to keep others from freeing your mother."

"So...she couldn't look for me. Wait, who trapped her and why?" (Y/n) knew little to nothing about Cath Palug, but he knew that the mysterious being would be able to answer his questions.

"For your sake, it's best that you not know the culprit nor their reasoning. I will tell you when the time comes. This seal is weakening. I'll be able to break free soon enough, and free your mother as well as yourself." The warmth that Fou gave off began to fade. "There isn't much time. Remember these words. Chaldea. Sheba. Antarctica. They will lead you to answers."

"Ca- I mean, Fou, wait! Don't leave me here!" Regardless of his plea, he was left by himself. The cold returned as soon as he was alone, but he himself wasn't there for much longer. His vision was blocked by sudden fog forcing him to close his eyes. (Y/n) awake with a cold sweat. He held the fur blanket close as he took a moment to get ahold of himself. His eyes immediately locked on to the familiar red irises of his own servant.

"What has worried you so much that you awake from your sleep in panic?" Gilgamesh calmly inquired. Despite his composure, (y/n) saw that he had been startled. "Did that information truly have that much of an affect on you?"

        "Chaldea. Sheba. Antarctica," (y/n) recited.

"What nonsense are you spouting?" Gilgamesh had been reading a book and now dropped the item from his hand allowing it to casually fall into a portal to his treasury.

(Y/n) wasn't sure if he should tell Gilgamesh all of the details, but he also didn't want to keep these thoughts to himself. They were becoming too much to handle. "My mother is alive and her guardian was turned against her and guards her from being harmed. Someone trapped her there. Fou told me those words as a clue to help me find her, but I don't know how," he ranted. His servant blinked at him at a loss for words.

"That was quite the tale," Masuda spoke up. The white haired servant rubbed his eyes free of sleep. "I don't suppose I was meant to hear any of that, was I?" Sure enough, (y/n) had forgotten that Masuda was still with them. He hadn't been awake when Masuda returned to the hotel room after a walk with Hessian. "I won't share the information with anyone of course. Just pretend I'm not here."

"If you are going to pretend to be asleep, at least do a good job at doing so," Gilgamesh scoffed. He was too focused on (y/n)'s condition to care anything about Masuda in that moment. His attention immediately went back to (y/n). "We have already used one day for the initial mission. If you use your time correctly, there will be enough left over to use on investigating this matter further." Gilgamesh sighed. "I will make sense of these clues in the mean time. As king, it is my job to rid my people of their worries, so worry not."

(Y/n) was slightly relieved by those words, but he still had questions that would be left unanswered. Undoubtedly, Gilgamesh himself had questions as well, but they had another matter to attend to, and kings do not go back on their word. "Masuda, we're going to go find your master today, but we'll need to prepare beforehand."

"Prepare for what? Besides, are you sure you don't need the time to rest? You haven't released your grip on that blanket since your awakwning." Masuda pointed at where (y/n)'s hand still latched onto the lion's fur. Upon looking down, (y/n) released the fur and rubbed his aching knuckles. "We could always wait for Gray to arrive, form a plan, and then proceed with it tomorrow."

"For once, I agree with the words he speaks," Gilgamesh retorted. He wouldn't dare say such aloud.

"Thanks for the idea," (y/n) mumbled. "I think that's probably for the best." He looked out towards the window although there were curtains covering it. "I don't think this is going to be a simple task. I'm getting a bad feeling..." (Y/n) lay on his side and pulled the blanket up to his shoulders. "I'll just rest until Gray gets here. Then we can discuss our plan of action and head to Citeaux Abbey." Despite his declaration, his rest was anything but that. His mind refused to simply ignore the new information that he had gotten. If he went by what he had concluded so far, the director was a key factor in finding out who he really was. The man's identity was a mystery. Once (y/n) figured that out, he would know who and what he was. He might even be able to solve the problems behind his illness.

The heavy thoughts burdened him so much that he didn't even notice himself slip into a deep sleep. By the time he awoke, the sun was assaulting his eyes even through the curtains. (Y/n) awoke to a clear mind and confusion as he rose from the bed. The collective sound of voices met his ears as his senses focused. His yawn was what interrupt the current conversation.

"Oh, he's awake now." The voice belonged to Gray. (Y/n) looked in the direction he had heard her voice coming from to find that he was right. She was sitting with Masuda and Gilgamesh as they likely discussed a plan of action without him.

"How long have I been asleep?" (Y/n) was not too concerned about being left out. His servant would let him know about anything important.

"Long enough, I suppose," the king of Uruk mumbled with a wave of his hand. "If you are well enough, then we can go ahead and deal with this matter today. There seems to be a bit of trouble brewing here in London, and it's best if we not get caught up in it."

"Trouble?" This was new information to (y/n). He hadn't felt any disturbances while they were in town.

"The reality marble that the other Caules created put the Clock Tower on high alert. They've pinned the blame on my mentor," Gray told him. She balled one of her hands into a fist. "Someone had to have been monitoring us. It's okay though. I trust that he will be able to avoid capture. He has the original Caules and Fiore with him. They understand the situation and will work together with him until I return."

"If he's in trouble, don't you think you should be helping instead of tagging along with us?" (y/n) wondered.

Gray shook her head at him. "Going with you may give me answers as well. Or at the very least, I'll find some clues on how to get El Melloi II out of this situation. He trusts Masuda, and Masuda trusts you. For now, this is probably the best thing for me to do." Her look of determination made it clear that nothing anyone said would change her mind. Well, almost...

"We're probably going to get sentenced to treason," Add spoke up with nothing but nonchalance in his tone. (Y/n) had forgotten about the small caged being that Gray brought around with her.

"T-That's not true!" Gray blurted out completely flustered. Gilgamesh rolled his eyes at the sight while Masuda held in his laugh.

(Y/n) didn't mind the extra help, but his mind was too busy focusing on other matters to care whether or not Gray was making the right decision. "Well then, tell me what you all came up with. We can head off to the abbey right away."
