Chapter Twenty Three: Freedom

No One's PoV:

"Hi Mio"

The room was silent for the first time, the phantom thief however just stared blankly. Wondering if he was truly right, if he and Saihara had really unraveled the true mastermind to this all.

He wanted to be wrong, he wanted to believe that the sister who had raised him, who had protected him from their mothers wrath, to the one who gave him that idea that blood doesn't mean you're family could be the one who took that true family from him.

Ace didn't say anything, just held firm to the member, the gun had been slightly lowered but still facing the phantom thief. Her facial expression the only indication of what she truly felt before she finally sighed.

"Hi Kichi" she greeted, as she with one hand pulled down the white mask revealing her bunned light purple hair.

What could be said? What could've been done?

"You know...I used to look up to you as a kid...you weren't perfect...and you weren't always the nicest person to be around...but you were there. And I thought that was all I wanted...someone who noticed if I was sad, or just not around...

"You left me though. You left me alone in the house, with her, you didn't even take me with you. I used to sit by the window for months, just waiting for you to come back...and you never did...and I wasn't angry actually...well once I got older and realized how hard it had to be for a kid to be someones parent I didn't blame you anymore...

"But Mio...why? How could you do this?! What kind of person have you become after all these years?! You're a cruel and selfish monster, you stole my family from me! You hurt them! I will never forgive you for this!

"WHY?! WHY DID YOU DO THIS?!" He accused, anger filling him and even though his mask hid his eyes his usually calm and relaxed body language showed all of his fury and his feeling of betrayal.

"I came back, didn't I?" She asked, "what? You didn't miss your big sister? Shame, I spent so many years searching for you..." she said with a sigh.

"It doesn't matter. You're here now, now we can do this the easy way, or the unpleasant way." Mio threatened, her knife pressed against Mirai's neck a small trickle of blood escaped.

"Lets go?" She asked with a sadistic smile.

"Let her go" he immediately demanded, "come with me and maybe I will~" she teased.

"Why? Why Mio?" He begged. "Whatever problem you have is with me, not them, DICE did nothing wrong!"

"You're wrong. I did come back, I came back and you were gone, I left because we were running out of money and crime was the fastest way to earn some. I came back, I came back once I had enough to take care of you. But that bitch let you run off, do you know how hard I had to search for you? How many hours I dedicated? Any contacts or favors I had, I cashed in to find you...and that's the fateful day she arrived at my footsteps." She declared before her smile grew wider.

"Your precious Jin, she was such a humble girl on the outside, but you should have seen the things she would do for an extra dollar. She fullfilled my every desire so long as she recieved that reward, whether it be your little groups protection or monetary compensation...

"Oh if I had known it was you she worked for earlier...no matter, she wasn't much fun. She wasn't like your little Masako, she's much more agreeable and adorable!" She said with a sma laugh.

"So you did know her...so how...how did you figure out about me?" He asked curious, "she had one tiny room in our headquarters, and when she quit just one day prior to the...incident...all that was in that room under the bed was a small photo...

"And front and center was you." Mio said with a loud laugh, "OH! And when I knew that...oh Masako chan I might have told you a wee small lie."

Mirai looked at her, her expression slowly realized before small tears escaped her.

"Your jester was an open book once I knew. One internet search history, it didn't take me long to connect the dots. The phantom thief, had fallen to the hanahaki disease...and knowing her, well, I knew who would be the new face. She is like you, Kokichi" She recalled.

"No...no she isn't" he argued, "she was a liar, but because she tried to protect others. I lied to protect myself. She trusted anyone. I never could have done that. She was willing to die and work on chance...she's nothing like me and that's why I loved her so much" he screamed, tears in his eyes that the mask couldn't hide.

Ace paused but seemed disappointed by his response.

"Tell me Saihara, what became of the officer who shot the two?" Mio asked turning slightly in his direction.

The detective froze, the realization was clear, "he was fired due to him not only shooting the two members, but also due to him selling information to local gangs...the reason why..."

...

What happened next was debated, it was a flurry of fast paced motions, the blood fell down like rain staining the floor, the clatter of a gun and the screams would never be forgotten in that young leaders mind.

She was reckless, an idiot, she had no value for her life anymore.

And she was brave.

Mirai Masako from her holds eyes widened when she realized the real truth, the one thing keeping her mind together, that the man she had been coded to despise had murdered her family was a facade, and the true killer...the one who had forced her to watch as she cut off the finger of her friends, the one who had stolen people irreplaceable...

Ignoring the sharp pain the girl hurled her bodys full weight knocking the taller woman off of her feet, the dagger however buried itself into the girls neck, cutting deep as the sharp pain caused the girl to gasp, however with that Mirai had broken free of their grasp, and Mio in her shock let go of the gun.

Saihara wasted no time quickly taking her down and pinning her to the floor, she screeched in retaliation as...

"MIRAI!" Nao screamed, his old obese body was gone due to the long periods of starvation, his body still must have been weak though, and against better judgement he ran to the petite girls side.

The phantom thief stared on his body paralyzed.

"My...fault..." he muttered as the inventor patted him on the shoulder.

The bleeding girl was cradled in her former roommates arms, "MIRI! MIRI YOU STUPID ARROGANT BITCH DON'T YOU FUCKING GO TO THE WEIRD LIGHT IT'S A TRICK FROM HELL!" He begged with big dramatic tears.

"I...I'm quitting..." she muttered, a distant look in her eyes, "NO! THERE IS NO SAVE FILE MIRI! MIRI STAY WITH ME ALRIGHT?" He screamed.

"She...won't use me....he won't use me...the bad men....won't use me...my parents...won't use me....I'm...free.....

"..."

"AAAAAAGH!" The boy screamed as the girl closed her eyes, and what seemed after an eternity the sirens were heard in the distance, the only counteract to the wails of the members as the leader collapsed to his knees.

The detective could only watch on from afar.
