Chapter 1: Prologue of the Turnabout

(3rd person point of view)

It was a quiet day in Kurain Village. The young acolytes were training, elders were teaching the young women, and Mary...

Mary was sweeping the stairs. Again. For the third time that day.

Mary wasn't training with the other acolytes because she had no spiritual energy to train anyways. She was one of the very few Fey members that were born with no spiritual power. It is why she is stuck being a simple housemaid, sweeping the building of the Fey manor over and over again for cash during the day until she went home to her mother. Mary's mother, Maha Fey, had a small amount of spiritual energy, but not enough to be in the main family. No, Maha and Mary were a part of the branch family. The main family included the missing Misty Fey, Mary's aunt, and her daughters. Mia and Maya Fey, the girls that Mary looked up to so much that her neck would probably hurt. Especially Mia...

Mia was one of the few people in Kurain that actually cared about Mary, along with Maya. The three of them hung out a lot during their breaks from the girls' training and Mary's cleaning. They were like sisters to her.

Recently, she heard from Mia that she would be leaving... Leaving Kurain village to be a "Lawyer". Mary didn't know what a lawyer even was or why Mia was so adamant on being one (was being a spirit medium in her sights?), but Mia said it would help her find her missing mother. Although Mary was happy for Mia, she was also heartbroken. Her cousin, no, her sister was leaving her in a place where she didn't belong. Maya was still there, yes, but she also planned to move away soon after her sister to see the outside world. Mary would be alone.

Mary stopped sweeping, noticing that night had already fallen. The next day, Mia was going to leave the village. She already told her that she packed her bags the night before. Mia also told her she had to study in a "University" to be a lawyer. Mary concluded it was like training in the Fey Manor, except it wasn't spiritual training. All she knew from all this was that Mia wanted to find her mother and "help people".

Help...

That word echoed in Mary's head all the way back to her home. Maha was waiting for Mary, scolding her for staying out late. Mary was always scolded for everything; not cleaning enough, not earning enough, not being good enough...

"I was working, I'm sorry..."

"That's not an excuse! You shouldn't be out this late!"

"I said I was sorry... Besides, I was just working."

"If you had powers, you wouldn't need to be doing all this! Ugh, you're a joke to the Kurain Village!!"

"... And who's fault is that!?"

"What...!?"

"I DIDN'T ASK TO HAVE NO POWERS, I WAS BORN WITHOUT THEM, GET THAT THROUGH YOU THICK SKULL!!"

"...!"

"I... I have no powers...! I KNOW THAT! I'M THE ONE WITH THIS CURSE, NOT YOU!", Mary yelled, breaking her broom and running off into her room. As she kept crying, she packed a bag she had in the corner with whatever she could carry. Her mother banged her door, yelling for her to unlock the door. Mary didn't care anymore, she just wanted to leave... and she knew someone who would help her.

(The next day, Mia's POV)

I was nearing the train. Maya had already said her goodbye to me at the manor. I prayed that aunt Morgan took care of her. As the train came closer, I heard someone call my name.

"MYSTIC MIA!!"

"Huh...?"

"MYSTIC MIA, WAIT!!", I turned and saw... Mary.

Mary was my younger cousin, and one of the few women in out history to have no spiritual power in the family. She was one of the few women who wasn't even given a "Mystic" title. Even though I told her that it wasn't necessary for her to call me Mystic Mia, she still did it. Despite her circumstances, she kept on working hard in the village. She cleaned, she cooked sometimes, she even babysat... So it was a shock to me when I saw her running towards me with an overflowing bag, kimono in disarray, her hair a total mess, panting like she was running from a serial killer. "Mary!? What are you doing here? Didn't we say goodbye back at the manor...?"

"Mystic... *huff* *huff* Mystic Mia... Please... *huff puff* Take me with you!", Mary declared.

"Wh... What!?"

"I-I know you're... *huff* going to the "University" place to become a lawyer, right!?"

"Y-Yes, why?"

"Please, I want to go with you and help you! Even if I don't become a lawyer, let me be, uh, an assistant...?"

"Mary... where is this coming from?", I asked. Mary started to tear up... It was the first time I ever saw her cry.

"P-Please... I can't stand being seen as less than... I'll do anything to just be seen as normal!", when Mary said that, my mind was set. She was like a little sister to me, like Maya but different. Mary was lost, she needed someone to notice her in some way. I wanted her to be happy, so...

I took her.

(Many years later, Mia's POV)

I sat in my office, looking at the case Phoenix was going to take tomorrow. It was going to be his first case since he became a lawyer. I hoped things would go well, which is why I was going to be there for him, as well as one other person...

Speaking of the devil, she walked into my office, my coffee in one hand and hers in another. Her steps were quiet, her shoulders slumped a bit, humming to herself. Mary Fey... or Mary Phree, as she liked to go by.

---

"Fey" doesn't work for me. It just doesn't. I want a different last name.

---

Mary placed my coffee on my desk, sipping hers silently.

"Thanks.", I said with a smile.

"Don't mention it...", Mary mumbled, fixing her glasses. The Mary from back home had changed so drastically. Back home, she was so wide-eyed and held an aura of happiness...

But that happiness was fake.

Now, she was so different. She was herself, and although herself wasn't the nicest person on the planet, she was still her. She was brutally honest, sometimes manipulative, but she did it for good reasons. I've told her to tone it down with using others for good (It just felt wrong), but all she told me was...

---

No one thought about not using me back home. I don't really care what people think of me right now... You're the only one that matters right now, Mystic Mia.

---

"Tomorrow is Spikey's first case.", Mary mumbled.

"Oh... Yeah, it is. He seemed pretty nervous when I talked to him on the phone.", I chuckled.

"Makes sense. He looks like a novice anyways."

"It was nice of you to send the reports to him early.", I smiled. Mary has grown over the years, going from being an assistant to being a private investigator for Fey & Co. In fact, she investigated the murder that Phoenix was going to take tomorrow. Mary always said she didn't have any great talents, but what she DID have without a doubt was an eye for clues. All my cases, she was the one that guided the investigations. It was almost like the missing spiritual power she had was switched with eagle eyes and a nose as sensitive as an elephants (apparently they have better sniffers than dogs...).

"I didn't do it to be nice."

"Huh?"

"If he fails, you'll look bad along with him. He's your disciple, right?"

"I mean, you are right about that. It's still nice of you, though."

"I don't care, your approval is all that matters.", Mary shrugged as she stood near the window. I sighed and got up to stand next to her.

"You know, one day I'll probably be gone--"

"Don't say that."

"You know it's true."

"..."

"When that happens, my approval isn't going to be here... You have to learn to live without my input, Mary."

"... No one else matters to me, Mystic Mia.", Mary shrugged as she started picking her stuff up from the ground. "I'm clocking out early. Get some rest."

"... Of course, take care, Mary."

"You as well, Mystic Mia.", with that, she was gone in a flash.
