Immortal - Part 24 - Tony x Reader
The flight from New York to Nebraska, had been a quiet one. The immortal lost in her thoughts, as she wondered what Howard had left for them to find. Now, she and Tony sat in the back of the car, while Happy drove them to the little farmhouse that she had lived in years ago. It had been decades since she had been there last; but nothing seemed to have changed much. The fields of wheat still stretching on for as far as the eye could see. She had always liked it there and hated it when she had had to move; but disappointment at having to leave places was something that she had grown accustomed to over the years. Having to pack and then unpack everything that she owned, just a part of her life. Yet that didn't mean that some places didn't have a place in her heart; and this, this place certain had that. The immortal supposing that as this was where she had last seen Howard, there was no way that it couldn't.
"You want to go another couple of miles; then hopefully there should be a clump of tree on the right-hand side. Just after the trees, there will be a turn off, that will take you up a dirt path to the old farm." (Y/n) explained from the back of the car, as the GPS that Happy was using to find the location, stopped giving him directions. Happy nodding, as he turned his attention back to the road.
"How long has it been since you last saw the place?" Tony enquired, as (Y/n) sat back in the seat next to him.
"Oh, twenty years or more, it must be. In all honesty, I lose track of time. Years pass before I know it. I left here a couple of years after your parents died. I quickly learnt that twenty years is about as long as I can stay somewhere, before questions start to get asked. Even though I do try and keep to myself, I still have to interact with others on the odd occasions. But life is slower around here. Things don't change as quickly, so I think that most things will be as they were, when I last saw them." (Y/n) replied, giving the billionaire a reassuring pat on the hand, before she turned her eyes back to the view, waiting for the trees to come into sight.
Tony couldn't help but look at her. Ok, he had seen many things, done many things; but this, the way (Y/n) spoke about the passing of years so matter of factly, was something different. He had tried to put himself in her shoes, after she had left him the night before; he had tried to imagine what it was like to never age, to just.........be. To be able to have been there, as the world grew. As the stone age became the bronze age, became the iron age, and beyond. To watch as civilisations grew and then declined. Yet as much as he had tried, he had found that even he couldn't truly fathom it. Sure, that to be an immortal and not lose your mind, must take a special person indeed. And as much as he liked the idea of not getting any older, he had to admit that he did not envy her. The thought of her being the only one; having to watch as everything and everyone she had ever known disappeared over time, actually made him feel sad. Sad enough that he had already promised himself that even though one day he too would disappear, he would do his best to give her some wonderful memories to keep, just like his father had.
"Just there................" (Y/n) suddenly called out, pointing up ahead of them to a group of trees that sat just on the side of the road.
"There should be a break in the fencing, just after those.........." She continued. A smile coming to her face, as the dirt track was where she said it would be. Happy taking a right and making his way up the path.
"Do you have any idea where my father might have buried what he left...........?"
"There is only one place that I can think of. Some distance before the house itself, there was an old oak tree that stood over a little pond. I would sit there a lot when I was here, watching as the sun went down. I have always loved oak trees, they remind me of things.........special times, and Howard knew that. So, it makes sense that if he was going to bury something that he wanted us to find at a later date, it would be there............."
"Us? What makes you think he wanted the both of us to find it..............?" Tony asked, as a large oak tree slowly came into view on the left-hand side.
"Because, there are two keys. I have one, and one was left for you. I am sure that your father knew that one day you and I would meet, and whatever is there, it needs both of us to open it. Now all we can hope, is that whoever owns this place now, doesn't mind us digging a little." The immortal explained, before giving Tony one of her disarming smiles, that he already loved.
>>------------------------------------<<
"Well, it looks like you won't be having to pay to dig up what Howard left........." (Y/n) said, as she looked through the windows of the old home. It obvious that the place hadn't been lived in for a while, which she thought was a shame.
"Want to go inside..............?" Tony retorted, as he pushed on the front door, and it slowly opened.
"No. My time at this place has gone. Going inside would not being me any joy; in fact, I think that it would do the opposite. That is why I normally never return to places that I have lived; I don't want to think about all the things that could have been. The life I could have had, if..............." The immortal replied, not bothering to finish her sentence, as she made her way back to the car.
"So, come on. Whatever Howard left us, won't dig itself up..............." She continued, before climbing inside. Tony giving Happy a shrug, as the head of security looked at him.
"Well.........you heard the lady. To the oak tree............"
>>---------------------------------<<
(Y/n) looked up at Tony, as the point of her shovel hit something. She, as well as Happy, had been surprised when the billionaire had taken one of the shovels and joined her at the oak tree. Tony watching as she had looked over the old tree, a smile finally coming to her lips, as she found something. The letters H and S carved into the bark. The immortal quickly beginning to dig, with Tony and Happy just as quickly following suit.
"Do you think................?"
"Well, it doesn't sound like I've hit a root............." (Y/n) said, as she got to her knees and used her hand to brush away the dirt. The words 'Stark Industries' slowly appearing. Happy helping her brush more dirt away, until the top of a box showed itself. The pair grabbing a handle each, before pulling it from the earth.
"Now, all we have to do, is see what Howard left............." She continued, as she took the key from her pocket. Tony retrieving the one that had been found with the movie. The pair pushing the keys into the locks, before turning them.
