Even Death Doesn't Take A Holiday

Loki stared at the ceiling, not blinking. He finally blinked once his eyes burned to the point they shut on their own accord. His jaw clenched, he gritted his teeth. He finally screwed up, again. But this time he was caught with no one to save him. He didn't fight it, though. He was a better man, he was taking responsibility for his actions for once, just like he promised. Yes, he broke promises before, but the promises he made to one person were the ones he kept. The one person that mattered. He fulfilled his last promise to them. The final promise. And it crushed him. His heart ached, the ice cold wall that was around it having been broken five years ago. Five years. To most it seems long, but to him.. to him it was just way to short.

He rolled on his side, now staring at the wall. He didn't move when something banged against the metal bars, "Suppertime, Laufeyson, up and put your hands through the bars for cuffs." A man said.

"I'm not hungry."

"Suit yourself. You starve, not my fault." The man walked away. Loki sighed and pulled the covers over him and pillow over his head.

Loki fell asleep, reliving his last memory of his love.
*****
Three months ago

"Loki join me!" She called, skating around to him. He chuckled,

"My Queen, we should be headed to the mall. You know, for Christmas presents for everyone." He said, watching her. She pouted,

"We can do that later. Loki, plllleeeeeeaaaasssseeeeeee." She whined. He sighed, not being able to resist her,

"Fine, my love." He said, sitting down and putting skates on. He smiled, hearing her squeal with joy. Soon he was going onto the ice with her, holding her hand as they skated around. He watched everyone before looking down at her, admiring her features. From her wide green eyes, her button nose, to her plump lips. The way her midnight black hair cascaded down her back perfectly, it was always so soft and smelled wonderful every time he was near her. He loved her with everything he had, the woman that saved him. His flower. His Queen. His Jillian. He was too busy staring at her that he skated right into the steps and fell, groaning. Jill gasped and stopped,

"Baby are you okay?" She asked, helping him up. He took his handkerchief from his pocket, holding it to his bleeding nose,

"Yea. I'm fine, My Queen. Your beauty is distracting." He responded. She blushed darkly, her face already red from the cold.

"Loki, your silver tongue.." she mumbled.

"I only speak the truth." He said, earning a look from her, "Okay, I only speak the truth to you. I never lie to you."

Once his nose stopped, they left the skating rink and headed to the mall. They bought gifts, had hot chocolate, had a quickie in a dressing room for funsies, and headed back home.

"So, what'd you get me?" Jill asked grinning. Loki chuckled,

"My love, I'm not going to tell you. No matter how many times you ask. You must wait for Christmas Day." He said, putting a hand in his pocket. He saw her pout, but knew it wasn't a real pout.

"Ugh, fine." She mumbled, moving closer to him.

They walked more and then that's when it went downhill.

There was a click.

Then a bang.

Then red.

Then the fall of his queen.

Loki caught her before she fell, his hand pressed against the bleeding wound on her back. He wanted to go after the man, but he would never leave his love injured and alone.

"Jillian.." he said, wiping her tears.

"I heard him, Loki. I heard him following us but I..I didn't think anything of it." She sobbed, gripping his jacket and shaking. Loki held her to him, pressing a kiss to her head,

"Shhh, shhh, my love." He said, hearing sirens, "You'll be okay." He said, "Jill?" He brushed hair from her face. She looked at him with darkened green eyes,

"I love you.." she breathed before her eyes went lifeless, her arms falling to her sides and her body going limp. Loki clutched her to his chest tightly and screamed at the sky, hot tears streaming down his face. He kissed her lifeless lips and pressed his forehead to  hers, not letting anyone touch her, not the paramedics, not the police. Not even the Avengers who ran out of the tower. They were so close to the tower. Yet they were so far.

"I love you too, my queen." Loki sobbed. Once they were able to take Jill away, Loki picked up the small box in dark green wrapping paper, clutching it tightly.

Loki woke with a jolt, tears streaming down his face. He sat up and wiped his eyes, taking the gold chain from around his neck, pulling it out from under his shirt and holding the engagement ring in the palm of his hand,

"I'm sure you would've said yes...." he whispered to himself, sniffling and putting it back under the neon orange shirt he wore.

In case you didn't connect the dots, Loki is in Prison, mortal Prison. He murdered the man responsible for taking his Queen's life. He repaid the favor, putting a bullet in the man's back when he was with a woman. Since Loki plead guilty to Murder, he'd get 25 years although life in prison was on the table for what he did to New York years earlier. But strings pulled by Tony Stark prevented that and got an agreement where two years of the Trickster's sentence would be taken away for every six months off good behavior. So far it's been three months and Loki's been good. But inmates stare at him with hate and loathing. He didn't blame them. Of course he was now human, so he could be harmed even killed. And he wouldn't stop them.

He felt a hand on his cheek but saw no one

"I would have said yes, of course I would've..." Jill's voice echoed quietly, "I am with you always.. Live for me.."

Loki squeezed his eyes shut, laying back down and curling up. He cried himself to sleep, dreaming of her more.

Extended Ending

Loki finally got out of prison after 15 years. He was older, of course. He could never get used to the aging.

"Stark."

"Reindeer Games."

Tony was surprised when Loki hugged him. He slowly hugged Loki back, patting his back.

"I apologize for everything I have done." Loki said, pulling away.

"Huh, guess prison does change a man." Tony joked, even more surprised that Loki smiled and laughed instead of growled and glared. "Cmon, let's take you home." He said, walking with Loki to his Ferarri.

Years passed, Loki getting along with everyone. Thor was happy to see his brother this way, but sad at seeing him age. Thor had stayed Æsir, the Throne having been handed to him. He visited his brother everyday, though, even after he was dead and gone.

Loki had died in his sleep at the ripe age of 65 from heart failure. Bruce died the year before, Natasha before that, Tony the year before, and Clint. Wanda and Pietro, the youngish ones they were, were still the living ones of the Avengers besides Thor.

Loki woke up in a room of gold walls, looking at his hands to see them young. He saw a mirror, rushing to it and seeing he was back to his young self. He heard the doors opened and turned, feeling his throat tighten. The two women he loved standing there. Jill and Frigga, his mother. Loki went to them, hugging the, both tightly as tears streamed down his eyes.

"I thought I wasn't worthy of Valhalla." He said.

"My son, you weren't. But, you becoming mortal and living the rest of your life the way you did, you became Worthy." Frigga said, kissing his cheek. Loki nodded and pulled back,

"I missed you, Mother."

"I missed you too, My Son." Frigga said, wiping his tears, "I will leave you two alone." She said and walked out, clothing the doors behind her. Loki looked at Jill, her being as beautiful as ever. He cupped her face, wrapping his arm around her,

"My Queen.." he murmured, kissing her deeply. Jill kissed him back, wrapping her arms around his neck.

Needless to say, they did years of needed catching up
